A chair, a chair… a chair to change the way students behave and enhance attainment…

It might seem curious, but it turns out to be true.  The chairs you install in classrooms affect student behaviour and learning.

In fact the chairs we use affect all of us.  If we are comfortable when we sit to study, we will study more, and study better.  If we are uncomfortable the reverse is true.

Research has shown that around three quarters of secondary school students report their school chairs as uncomfortable.  Around nine in ten say that the chair they have to sit on affects their ability to focus and concentrate.

And given that in the course of a year the average student will spend around 800 hours sitting in class it is not surprising that the impact of the humble school chair is huge.

But there is more because Ofsted has reported that just about the largest source of disruption in classrooms came from students swinging on chairs.

Worse, many of those students who engaged in this sort of action, were students who do not engage in other low level disruptive behaviour.  It is just that they are uncomfortable, the chairs can be used for tilting and swinging, and so students who otherwise would never disrupt lessons now do so.

Thus changing the design of chairs makes the students more able to focus (because they are more comfortable) and less likely to be disruptive.

It was this understanding which led to the development of the Max2 chair; a chair designed to aid study, focus and concentration.  It naturally comes with a 10 year guarantee, has a zero environmental impact, is delivered within 7-10 days from order and which can be discounted by up to 40%.

There is more information HERE, along with images and details of how to buy.  If you would like to talk about any of the issues raised here or indeed any other point related to the Max2 chair, please do call us on 0345 257 8850 or email info@dlb.co.uk

What is the most effective way of helping all students become effective writers?

One of the most curious things about learning to write in one’s native tongue is that at the same time as learning to use the language one is actually using the language.

Which is why the learning tends to be twofold. On the one hand one learns the rules and logic of the language in a systematic way, but on the other hand issues suddenly arise that show that further explanation is needed.

For example, we might take the old favourite of homographs and homophones. They can cause endless confusion, so what should one do?

The answer, of course, is to have a lesson or a part of the lesson on this particular topic – quite possibly throwing in some homograph and homophone puns along the way just to make it more lighthearted.

The same is true with every other part of the language. From the indicative, imperative, and subjunctive mood to the use of a comma with adverbials of frequency.

This is what the 200 page copiable volume “Grammar and Punctuation for Key Stages 3 and 4″ covers. Over 170 different items and topics, each dealt with, along with examples.  It offers teachers invaluable assistance in familiarising their pupils with those grammatical and punctuation principles relevant to Key Stages 3 and 4 and rooted in national literacy strategies.

In this way Grammar and Punctuation for Key Stages 3 and 4 performs a dual function: it is both a grammar book and an editing handbook, utilising authentic examples collected from a variety of written sources.

It pays particular attention to those areas with which authors of all ages tend to have difficulties and offers an abundance of examples of current usage highlighting these areas.

Such examples are then followed by suggested improvements and by explanations justifying those improvements. Finally the relevant principles are practised through activities designed for pupils.

Anna Nolan, the author of Grammar and Punctuation for Key Stages 3 and 4, has spent many years running public examinations, developing national qualification, carrying out linguistic research and writing books on English grammar, punctuation and usage.

This copiable book is available both in spiral bound printed form and on CD.  It is a revised and updated second edition of the book Grammar and Punctuation at Key Stage 3.

There is a sample chapter available on-line at http://pdf.firstandbest.co.uk/english/T1844.pdf

What is the most effective way of helping your autistic students to overcome (or prevent) teen issues?

Information and advice which is readily available to teenagers to help them overcome or prevent teen issues (primarily in the media) doesn’t cater for teenagers who view the world in a wholly different way – making such information and guidance incomprehensible.

Which is why SEN Press has produced the Teen Issue Value Pack, suitable for students aged between 14 and 19 with autism or other special educational needs and a reading age of around seven.

The Teen Issues Value Pack consists of:

Six story books, each exploring a different teen issue, with relevance to the ASDAN award programmes ‘Transition Challenge’ and ‘Towards Independence’. Titles (and topics) include, “Emma and Laura” (girls’ personal hygiene), “Going to the Pub” (responsible attitudes to alcohol), “Jake is Gay” (dealing with being gay), “Matt Gets Wise” (boys’ personal hygiene), “The Tattoo” (making responsible decisions), and “Speaking in Public” (self-confidence).

A CD-ROM providing electronic versions of the above titles, making it ideal for interactive whiteboard presentations and for students who would also benefit from listening to the text. It is also possible to edit and save the text to make your own story, create differentiated texts and personalise the text with your students’ names to enhance engagement.

An extensive range of activity worksheets and interactive activities that encourage reading comprehension. Activities include, Missing Words, True or False, Multiple Choice, Words & Pictures, Picture Search, Keyword Flashcards, Wordsearch, Spot the Difference and How Well Did You Read?.

Supporting resources for teachers including page-by-page notes for all the stories and assessment resources (feedback sheets and student record sheets).

The complete set of resources containing two copies of each of the six readers, the complete teacher book, and the CD Rom is available for £139 plus VAT.  Individual elements from the pack are also available separately.

For further information, please click here.

Alternatively, please email info@senpress.co.uk or call 01582 833205.

What is the best way to ensure that your colleagues fully appreciate all the things that you do?

The notion of Special Needs Week is quite simple – to provide a focus and opportunity for anyone who wants it to find a way to let all your colleagues know just what you do and the issues you are facing.

And indeed, one option that we have heard from some schools is to take up a session on a CPD day to talk to colleagues about your work – and, if you wish, to use some of the statistics and data that are on the Special Needs Week site.

And from what we hear, it seems that the information on the site is being used when discussing with senior management the resources that are needed to meet all the demands you are facing.

I have also been contacted by a number of SENCos particularly thanking us for the list and brief details of 60+ special needs, which they have found really helpful. There have also been some nice comments about the research, which can put into context the level of demand that you are facing.

Also on our website is our review of meeting and managing parental expectations as opposed to waiting for parents to take the initiative; the results can be particularly beneficial for everyone.

And we have just added some further research (this time not undertaken by us) into the level of work that is being experienced by special needs departments around the country.

I do hope you find something of value on the Special Needs Week site.  But if there is something that you have looked for which we have not covered, please do write and let us know.

We are keen to keep adding data to the Special Needs Week site in the coming weeks and months, so if you let us know what you are looking for, we’ll do our level best to find it and publish it on the site.

Special Needs Week is at www.specialneedsweek.co.uk

If you want us to look into any particular issue and publish information on it, please do drop me a line via:

  • Email: HQ@Specialneedsweek.co.uk
  • Post: Special Needs Week, Hamilton House, Earlstrees Ct., Earlstrees Rd., Corby, Northants NN17 4HH
  • Fax: 01536 399 012
  • Or you can phone 01536 509 822

Special Needs Week is kindly sponsored by Aspire GB, Clicker 7, The Dyscalculia Centre, Dysgraphia Help, Fisher-Marriott (StarSpell), Multi-Sensory Learning, ptuk, Robinswood Press, SEN Press, Turnabout Programme, and Type and Test.

Very special magic…

Once upon a time, there was a young musician called Robin. He loved to play the piano, because he knew music could be magical…

Then, one day, he began teaching music in schools. How the children loved playing music! But then, something terrible happened… he was asked to stage a show for all of the parents. Oh, how he was filled with fear!

Suddenly, the music teacher had an idea! His brother, Simon, was a writer and director of television programmes for ITV, Channel 4, and even the BBC! Perhaps if he and Simon worked together…

So, they created a show with very special ‘easy peasy’ magic. No-one had ever seen a play like it before – everyone agreed, it really was magical!

And what happened to the two brothers…? They wrote lots of Easy Peasy Plays that were used by hundreds of schools throughout the land! Yippee!

And this is where you join the story! Our latest Easy Peasy Plays are ready to delight your school! Even better, to celebrate the launch of our new summer collection you can enjoy a special discount of £5.00 off any play! Just enter the discount code save3 at checkout by 31 July 2016.

Perfect! Don’t you just love a happy ending…?

What exactly are ethics, and how to do they change?

From Utilitarianism to Deontological Ethics, from Virtue Ethics to Free will and Determinism there are a lot of ethical systems around.

And that is before we get to environmental ethics, medical ethics (including abortion, euthanasia and embryo research) and business ethics.

So what are they all, and how exactly they relate to religious ethics?

That is the question that “Religious Ethics” by Francis Beswick examines, considering ethical thinking in relation to various religious traditions, while considering how religious and secular ethics differ from each other.

The book commences with the phrase “I ought to …” and notes that from this kind of statement ethics, whether it be secular or religious ethics, begins.

Throughout the book the student is aided by a large number of questions presented for consideration which take the student back to the various topics that have been covered in order to ensure that each different ethical system and viewpoint is understood.

Religious Ethics is available as a copiable spiral bound book or on CD Rom. The book comes with an unlimited photocopiable licence for the school, and costs £21.99 plus £3.95 delivery for either the book or CD. If you wish to buy both together the price is £28.98 plus £3.95 delivery.

You can order in four different ways. In each case please quote our reference T1697emn. Sample pages and a contents list can be viewed prior to ordering on http://pdf.firstandbest.co.uk/re/T1697.pdf

Celebrate summer with music… Give pupils a lifetime of musical repertoire in weeks

IntroducingOcarinas

Ocarinas are the only musical instruments that can give pupils immediate musical success.

With most instruments, children play just a handful of notes after months of practice and tuition. With Ocarinas, children play a variety of recognisable (and easy-on-the-ear!) tunes after just a few lessons. Successful music-making becomes instantly achievable when whole classes play Ocarinas.

So if your class have had little opportunity to make music this year, now is the time. Play tunes in class, in assembly, at outdoor events. Play Skye boat song, Ode to Joy, Daisy Daisy and let your pupils entertain parents and friends to celebrate the end of the school year and a sunny summer.

As teachers ourselves, we have made sure Ocarina-playing can be taught by any teacher to any group of children. And this accessibility for both children and staff is the reason we received the Best Music Education Product award in 2015. Here’s what the expert panel of judges said…

The Ocarina “combines creative potential, ease of use, affordability and practicality” Best Music Education Product WINNER in the Music Teacher Awards for Excellence

So if you’d like to give your children the chance to play, just go to www.ocarina.co.uk

Your class set of Ocarinas will last for years…

As a school investment, Ocarinas and Ocarina music books last for decades and can be played by each succeeding year group. Children love them so much that their parents may like to buy them to take away at the end of term. The four ‘p’s say it all…

   ✔ pleasant sound

   ✔ proper music

✔ playing for fun as well as achievement

✔ performing from the word ‘go’

Ocarina Rainbow Starter Boxes are just £10 per child and come with free teaching resources, or the Star Buy equips every child with an Ocarina and two books with over 50 proper tunes to play, for just £15 each – and of course the teacher is fully resourced with everything needed to teach whole class music. All orders are despatched immediately for delivery to your school within 2-3 days.

Ocarinas are Tuned, Durable, Musical, Accessible and Ready-to-play

If everyone was fast we’d still never get anywhere

A natural tendency during international tournaments is to allocate each student to a country, often from where they came from. Polish kids will follow Poland, Spanish speakers may follow Spain, Argentina, Latvians to follow Latvia, etc.

An Indian friend of mine reminded me about the Los Angeles Olympics. His son was assigned to India. Others had Britain, Germany, Kenya, USA…. And every day he used to come back and say, India did not win anything, today or yesterday….

Luckily this year’s Olympics are not during School term but even though many parents and children will fail the Tebbit Test, we need to be sensitive. We have published a book about Sports and Sports Day which recognises that you do not have to be fast and showy; sometimes being slow and thoughtful can win the day.

It is called, “Sports Day in the Jungle” where the protagonists are Monkey and Sloth.

This is published both as a normal softback picture book and as an eBook in dual language.

The eBook is part of our Kitabu range of e-picture books, but with a difference. All text is narrated in English and, in the dual language versions, also in the child’s home language. The Olympics are a family affair and the eBooks can be an effective way to bring what is happening in school into the drawing room!

There are activities to build vocabulary and comprehension and a video using pictures and text from the book. The emphasis is on repetition, story-telling, oracy and there are plenty of discussion points in the accompanying teacher’s notes.

Sports Day in the Jungle comes in English and English with 16 language editions, English with Arabic, Bengali, Farsi, French, Hungarian, Italian, Lithuanian, Mandarin, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Somali, Turkish, Urdu and in English only.

We want you to try these exciting books for yourself and therefore we are offering you a FREE eBook of Sports Day in English and Spanish.

Please click here to get your FREE book.

The eBook library has been very popular and there are over 450 book and 35 languages. These eBooks are not just PDF versions of print books, but each is accompanied with activities and videos.

They can be used on your iPads, Android, Whiteboard or laptop. If you want to see other editions and titles, please click here.

Pupils love poetry and song.

To help schools enjoy and promote the reciting and learning of poetry, the Performance Poetry Society is offering Primary Schools the opportunity of having Jim MacCool’s Interactive Poetry and Song Shows to visit this Autumn.

Jim MacCool’s Shows have proved to be suitable for all ages and abilities of primary school pupils and will enrich and entertain your pupils and staff alike.

Here are some comments on schools’ Web pages and newsletters, after Jim’s visit.
A Poet Visiting Kings Avenue School
On Tuesday the 26th April a fantastic poet named Jim MacCool came to Kings Avenue to tell us about his job. The assembly was so upbeat it was like a concert. We did loads of singing; everyone was having so much fun. He did riddles and was very inspirational. He inspired me to write more poems. Jim brought some fabulous instruments; I want to give Jim special thanks for being so inspiring.
By Lattisha – 5S
Jim MacCool at Cragside School
We were so pleased to have Jim MacCool from the Performance Poetry Society today.
He performed for reception to year 6, including parents and grandparents, and had everyone clapping, stomping and joining in with a variety of Scottish and Irish verse.
It was fabulous to see the children sharing such an exciting experience with their families.
We’re all now looking forward to the children writing and presenting their own performance poetry in the classroom. Thanks so much to everyone who came and joined in the fun; sharing the experience with parents and grandparents was very special and exciting for the children.

To find out how your school  can take advantage of this opportunity and join in, please telephone me, Sandra Dennis on 0208 688 6951 or email performancepoetry@yahoo.com for further details.

Academic Summer Schools 2016 – Additional Places Now Available

The Debate Chamber Summer Schools offer students age 11-18 the opportunity to find out more about some fascinating subjects, prepare for university applications, meet like-minded peers and get to grips with some tough intellectual challenges.

The material will be challenging (for the older age-group, about the level of difficulty one might expect in the first year at university), but the atmosphere will be relaxed, with plenty of discussion, debate, and opportunities for students to shape the direction of classes. It is an environment conducive to getting to grips with new ideas.

Working in small groups (usually around 14 students per group) over several days offers participants a real chance to get to know tutors and fellow students and to explore the topics or questions that particularly interest them.

We now have additional dates and/or places for the following events:

The English Literature Summer School for 15-18s, now in three 5-day blocks to allow time for greater discussion of contemporary literature, and a more in-depth look at various literary critical perspectives. Students can come to Part 1 for literature up to 1790, including Chaucer, Shakespeare and Milton, to Part 2 for literature of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, or to the brand new Part 3 which covers contemporary poetry, prose and drama. Additional places now available for Part 3 (Contemporary Literature) on the 22nd-26th August.

The Physics Summer School, for students who have completed AS Maths at the time of the course, covers a range of topics including thermodynamics, quantum mechanics, astrophysics and relativity. This course offers a chance to explore some challenging undergraduate level material selected to engage and inspire bright students keen to push themselves beyond the school curriculum. Additional places now available for this course on the 18th-22nd July.

The History Summer School, for students aged 15-18, is an intensive five-day course which looks at historiographical questions and historical methods, using seminars, lectures, activities and informal discussions. Topics are selected to challenge and broaden the historical outlook of participants, and give a taste of what the subject is like at undergraduate level. Additional places now available for this course on the 1st-5th August and 22nd-26th August.

There is also some limited availability remaining on other courses, including the Civil and International Law Summer Schools, the Philosophy Summer School, and the Young Doctors Summer School (for students aged 11-14).

Practical Details:

All the Summer School events will be held at University of London venues in Bloomsbury, Central London, and will take place in July and August 2016. Please note that these courses are not residential, and accommodation must be arranged independently if required.

You can find full details of schedules, dates, costs, student reviews and tutors at http://www.debatechamber.com/summerschools/.

There is a limited amount of bursary funding available for students who would otherwise have financial difficulty in attending – please see our website for details.

To book a place please visit www.debatechamber.com/summerschools/, call us on 0845 519 4827, or email info@debatechamber.com. Places will be allocated on a first come first served basis

The Mirror Never Lies

How would you help a child who develops one of these illnesses? Would you be sympathetic to a mental illness or would you take the view that the child was being silly and irresponsible.

Today’s children are far more obsessed with body image than previous generations. Many of their role models are excessively thin, and for some being thin becomes equated with success and popularity. Dieting is not unusual among teenagers and it is terribly easy to carry it too far. It is not so easy to recover without a lot of support and understanding. Anorexia and bulimia are addictive illnesses in which the sufferer lies and conceals to attempt to cover up the addiction. There is a large amount of self-deception as the sufferer may see a fat person in the mirror even although those around him/her see an emaciated one. The sufferer does not want help as he/she is terrified of becoming fat.

This book was written by someone who herself suffered both anorexia and bulimia for sixteen years. It describes in detail how she damaged her health and jeopardised her family relationships and friendships through an illness to which she was not willing to admit. It also describes her struggle back to normal healthy eating. The latter sections of the book give practical advice for normal healthy eating and describe the physical side effects of not having a healthy diet.

What is the benefit of testing pupils for dyscalculia?

One of the great problems in working with dyscalculic pupils and students is that there are many different ways in which dyscalculia affects individuals.

Because of this there is no such thing as a “typical dyscalculic person” or indeed a single method for helping the dyscalculic pupil or student.

In short, when faced with a dyscalculic individual what we have to do is try to find out the areas in which the pupil has problems and the specific difficulties that the pupil has.

Finding such information out can be made more difficult by the fact that many dyscalculics evolve their own methods of handling maths over time, making it appear as if they know what they are doing in certain situations.

In such situations, although the pupil or student can get an answer right, he/she often has no understanding at all and is instead just going through a mechanical and essentially (for them) meaningless process.

It is because of this sort of problem that in 2011 the Dyscalculia Centre introduced its on-line test for dyscalculia, suitable for pupils aged 8 and above.

Hundreds of individuals now take the test each year, and many schools have found it helpful to test several pupils in the course of a year, which is why we are now introducing a special price for schools that use our test with three or more pupils.

The aim of the test is not simply to say “this person is dyscalculic,” although it does give that result.  It aims primarily to find out where the specific problems for that individual are and then suggest how these problems can be overcome.

For example, the test seeks to unravel situations where the student seemingly knows how to undertake mathematical computations without having any idea what is going on.   It also looks for associated short term / long term memory issues, problems with understanding the very concept of number, and difficulties with the notion of time and of shapes.

The Dyscalculia Test is taken on-line, and results in a detailed report (usually around five pages of A4) identifying the problem areas and the actions that can be taken to help the pupil overcome these issues.

What’s more, the Centre also then provides free teaching materials that can be used with the pupil to help deal with the most important areas of difficulty in a multi-sensory way, thus allowing the pupil or student to start moving forward in terms of mathematical knowledge.

There is more information about the Dyscalculia Centre’s on-line test for dyscalculia at http://www.dyscalculia.me.uk/testing.html

Testing costs £59.95 per individual or £49.95 each where three or more tests are booked together (although these tests do not all have to be taken at the same time). This price includes taking the test, receiving a specific report in relation to the individual taking the test, and being provided with resources relevant to that individual which can be used to help them progress in maths.

The test itself is set up for payment by credit card on-line:

However if you wish to use a school order number you can do this by phoning 01536 399 011, or by fax to 01536 399 012.  In each case we will need your email address so that we can email you a link to the on-line test.  There are more details about payment for schools on http://www.dyscalculia.me.uk/teacher.html

What is the most effective way of attuning your younger pupils’ ears to the French language?

Earworms, stuck-song syndrome, sticky music, and cognitive itch are all terms used to describe when a song gets stuck in your head – and, although defined, it can’t quite be explained.

So how can you use this scientific mystery to your advantage so your pupils will pick up their French language learning more readily as they advance through the curriculum?

The answer is with Petites Étoiles – a comprehensive resource which uses rhymes and songs to introduce your Reception to Year 2 pupils to French language learning. So when they start to learn French more formally, they will have already internalised how it sounds.

Petites Étoiles provides lesson plans, activities, and ideas based on 18 popular topics (toys, food, animals, celebrations…), with each unit focusing on a rhyme or a song to aid the pronunciation of words and to make learning more memorable.

The accompanying disc also contains video clips, as well as a huge bank of reproducible resources, IWB games, and much more. The practical activities are play-oriented and range from role-playing and miming to phonics games and mask-making.

Furthermore, Petites Étoiles has a clear and easy-to-use layout and provides a huge amount of practical support for teachers which means that it can be used by both French specialist teachers and teachers with limited knowledge of the French language.

What are the three steps to identifying dysgraphia?

Step one: Compare your student’s handwriting with other students’ handwriting of the same age

Step two: Identify what is making his or her handwriting appear to be of poor quality:

Does his or her handwriting contain oversized letters and punctuation?
Are there inconsistencies in the size of consecutive letter?
Are letters and words written at
an inconsistent angle?
Is
his or her handwriting spaced inconsistently?
Are letters and words written in the wrong order?
Does
his or her handwriting contain more spelling mistakes than you would expect?
Does he or she often cross out his or her work and rewrite it?

Step three: Identify why the handwriting is of poor quality – What causes dysgraphia? A student with dysgraphia will often have problems with his or her language processing, fine motor skills, memory recall, pen/pencil grip, handwriting posture and/or visual spacing.

Dysgraphia Help offer an online dysgraphia test for pupils over 8 years old for £32 which can act as a preliminary diagnosis. The test consists of 50 questions and after completion of the test and submitting a handwriting sample you will receive a report within 72 hours.

You can find more information about Dysgraphia Help’s Online Dysgraphia Test at www.dysgraphiahelp.co.uk/testing-for-dysgraphia/.

Students love poetry and song.

Dear Head of English,

To help schools enjoy and promote the reciting and learning of poetry, the Performance Poetry Society is offering Secondary Schools the opportunity of having Jim MacCool’s Poetry Shows to visit this Autumn.

Jim MacCool’s Shows have proved to be suitable for all ages and abilities of secondary school pupils and will enrich and entertain your pupils and staff alike.

Here are some comments from Secondary schools after Jim’s visit.

Poet Jim MacCool’s visits to All Saints
On Monday 9th & Tuesday 10th November, Years 7 and 8 were given the opportunity to attend an interactive poetry workshop led by performance poet Jim MacCool. Rhythm was a key focal point of the session with Jim accompanying his verse with a variety of instruments and props. After initial shyness, the students (and staff) were soon clapping, singing and on their feet joining in. It was a thoroughly entertaining event!

St. Paul ’s High School, Bessbrook
A packed house cheered and applauded Mr MacCool after each verse and Celtic song. Pupils volunteered to go up on stage and dance to Jim’s Irish Drum. Jim sang, recited poetry and played the Irish Drum as he recounted stories inspired by Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales.
Roisin Patton, Drama teacher at the school, said of the performances, ‘Pupils were enthusiastic and involved throughout Jim’s performances. It was definitely worthwhile that he came along. Y9 Pupils, in particular, enjoyed ‘The Boxer’s Tale’ as well as the short question and answer session they had with Jim after that final performance’.

To find out how your school can take advantage of this opportunity and join in, please telephone me, Sandra Dennis on 0208 688 6951 or email performancepoetry@yahoo.com for further details.

Supporting SEN Through Careful Design

It seems that anything with the SEN tag is more expensive. Yes, the products need to be strong, supportive, and fit for purpose but why so expensive?  It also appears that most products designed for SEN schools look old, cumbersome and, to be honest, rather ugly.

When Don’t Lean Back Ltd approached the Max 2 chair it was to design a mainstream chair that looked stylish but with all the durability and practicalities of the best educational chairs in the world.  SEN schools were always a major consideration in this design process to give extra support to children’s backs as well as the anti-tilt frame to avoid pupils rocking on their chairs.

The Max 2 Chairs are beautiful products and add real, measurable value to any SEN schools.

How half a minibus can be an absolute bonus – and a perfectly practical idea

Much of the world comes in unbreakable units.  You can’t really have half a person (unless you work in a mortuary and really need to do the odd bit of dissecting).  You can’t have half a football either – or at least not meaningfully.

And you might imagine that the same applies to half a minibus?  But strangely enough, the notion of half a minibus is not only practical, but it is one that hundreds of schools now utilise.

Not surprisingly large numbers of schools have a situation in which their minibus is booked to overflowing, meaning that some sports events, such as away fixtures and the like, become hugely difficult operations to arrange.

You know you can’t possibly justify another minibus, because you only have this problem a few times a week, but you also know that if you could have a minibus for these additional occasions life would be so much easier.

However, there is a solution.

Growing numbers of secondary schools are leasing an extra minibus (meaning that there is no initial large payment required – just a monthly lease fee) and then sharing it part time with one or two other schools.  There are many ways in which this can be done, but sharing with a local feeder primary school is one of the most popular.

In this way the cost of running the minibus is shared, and each school knows exactly when it has the extra bus and arranges events around it.

Better still, there is no issue about the cost of repairs, servicing and the like, since leased minibuses come with all the arrangements and all the costs of servicing and repairs built into the lease.

If you have not leased a minibus before, or not thought of sharing one before, probably the best way forward is to give me a call and I can talk you through how it works – not least because a fair number of schools are now involved in shared minibus leasing projects, so we have a lot of experience in helping to set up such a project.

But if you want to take a look at who we are and what we do before you call, you’ll find more information about leasing at www.minibusleasing.co.uk.

Ofsted highlights low-level disruption. But it is still missing the fundamental question.

Ofsted has been commenting on the topic of low level disruptive behaviour since at least 2005 – and quite possibly before.

And what is interesting is the lack of discussion as to why low-level disruption happens. What is the cause?

This is not a remote academic question, because normally understanding the cause of a problem is the key to solving the problem. In this case, however, it seems Ofsted thinks not.

The government office instead focusses on the notion that some teachers feel senior leaders do not understand what behaviour is really like in the classroom – and they cite PISA research which backs up this view.

In most organisations, if a problem exists and is not being solved, the issue of the cause quickly becomes the focal point. Find out why and then address the issue.

Indeed it can be argued that one of the great problems with approaches to discipline is that they are based on ideas and beliefs rather than practical experimentation which might establish whether a theory works in terms of reducing disruption and enhancing learning.

Even when such experimentation does exist, it can sometimes be the case that those who determine educational policy may set it aside when the experiment’s results don’t quite match their established political beliefs.

When it comes to behaviour and discipline there is research, the findings of which have never been countered, which shows that the key factor in determining the behaviour of pupils is not the syllabus of the school, parental expectations, nor indeed the socio-economic background of the students.

Rather it is the view of the staff within the school. In fact, where different staff hold different views on the issue of behaviour and discipline, then behavioural issues increase.

In short, when the staff genuinely agree to, and subsequently adopt, a unified policy then the problems vanish.

What makes this finding so important is that first, it puts the power to change pupil and student behaviour totally in the hands of the school and its managers, and second, it assures us all that change is possible.

This is the starting point for the volume, Improving attitudes, managing behaviour and reducing exclusions, a book that builds from the original research which proved this finding and which applies it to contemporary schooling.

The findings of the original research reviewed in the book are very clear: schools improve when all those in the school decide to improve the school, not because of government initiatives, Ofsted, or what anyone else tells us to do.

For, once a school has its own unified policy, and is able to project that policy to parents and students as an approach to which all staff agree, the unity of purpose of the school is established.

The key issue thus becomes the implementation and maintenance of the policy every day of the school year. And it is the implementation of this approach that “Improving attitudes” describes.

KM classroom chairs are available again…..

For many years KM Furniture were producing what were arguably the most popular classroom chairs in the UK.

However, two years ago KM Furniture went into liquidation. It was a sad day as it meant that many people in and around Chesterfield lost their jobs; and schools and colleges were unable to replace their existing KM chairs with the same models.

Now for the good news…..

Two years later KM chairs are available again AND they are still made in the UK.

The most popular KM chairs, the P3, P6 and P7, together with the NP stool can be obtained from Central Educational Supplies Ltd…usually within a couple of weeks (although delivery lead times are likely to be somewhat longer during the summer).

Free instruments for your school

Every school who books a free CD recording project with us receives this 12 player djembe set worth £299, totally free of charge.

d

You will receive six 40cm and six 30cm authentic, solid-wood djembe and as you can see, the djembe are of a good size and suitable for both Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 children. The djembe would be a great addition to any hand percussion you may already have and assist in teaching rhythm, playing as an ensemble as well as other areas of the Music National Curriculum. Plus if you were to ever host a drumming workshop at your school, you can use your own djembe.

Our professional recording engineers come to your school with studio recording equipment, and spend the day recording your CD with you, for free. Our Interactive Recording Guide shows the huge educational benefit in the project for the children, and makes planning the project really simple with everything set out for you.

All you need to do is decide what you’d like to include on your CD – a performance or event, instrumental groups, the whole school singing, each class singing their favourite song or even your drumming. The CD is a treasured memento to be proud of, a great showcase for the school’s talents, and the recording is an amazing day for the children. You can even raise funds for your school from the sales of your CD. I have included some recent feedback from schools at the end of my email so you can see what other teachers have thought of recording with us.

The summer term is very popular for schools who want to record school performances and it is of course the last chance to record your year 6. Your CD could be as simple as each class singing their favourite song, along with any instrumentalists or whole school songs.

So you don’t miss out on this fantastic djembe set, it’s important to note that you need to record your CD in May, June or July. That leaves plenty of time to plan your recording but you’d need to register your interest with us soon so we can get the ball rolling.

If you’d like more information, you can give me a call or drop me an email and I’ll forward you our Interactive Recording Guide. I can also check the availability of any particular dates you may like to record your CD.

What Makes a Good DNA Electrophoresis Tank for Educational Use in the School Lab?

From the moment we started to run biotechnology event programmes including DNA electrophoresis in schools, we were faced with a problem: what DNA Electrophoresis Tank would stand up to repeated school use week after week, year after year.

Obviously DNA tanks for school labs need to be robust enough to be used time and time again in school lab conditions.  They also need to be well supported by consumable DNA lab kits and prove to be cost-effective – both initially and in the long term.

Equally importantly, they have to be able to run DNA gels as quickly and accurately as possible – to fit in with lesson times – while giving you total control over the power supply and tank as required.

The quality of power fittings and the power supply used are important too, with as much power to be delivered as safely as possible in an easily controllable way to ensure the DNA gels run quickly but accurately.

The way in which gel trays fit into the tank is yet another factor – especially if there is the ability to place more than one in the tank at a time. And you’ll need a simple, robust housing system.

And finally the Gel-Trays need to be hard-wearing, with no leakage, and easy for students to use.

In taking our STEM and science events around schools we have found the best equipment is the Edvotek manufactured DNA Electrophoresis Tanks – and that is what we use in schools.  And now we are able to offer the complete range to schools at incredible prices.

Thus we use the tanks when we work in schools, and we now sell the equipment as well.  Which means we don’t have to do a sales pitch.  Instead we talk about how these tanks work in school environments and very effectively demonstrate their potential during an event.

GCSE AQA A Geography Flash Card Revision

This resource will be useful for students in their revision throughout and at the end of their Geography GCSE AQA A course.  It is based on what successful students have described as one of the most effective revision techniques they have used.

It is an idea that has been further developed from observing a son’s keen interest in collecting football cards and it is fascinating to watch how children collect and make use of these cards and how these cards are stored.

An extensive checklist of questions based on the specification and past exam questions for the popular AQA A geography specification has been produced providing a valuable planning and revision resource. It can be used by teachers and students to plan curriculum coverage and identify strengths and weaknesses.

Answers to accompany all of these questions  are designed to provide the sufficient knowledge to help students achieve an A* and cover the gaps in the resources provided by other authors, especially when it comes to more lengthy answers, but in particular for case study questions.

There are also flashcards for all 372 questions. On one side of a flashcard is a question and on the other the answer.  These cards are in PowerPoint and if you print off the documents back to back they are then ready to be cut up. There are a maximum of nine cards and answers on an A4 sheet.

These resources are for the 6 most popular topics therefore providing the curriculum coverage needed for the AQA A specification.

How can schools deliver a manageable computing journey at Key Stage 3 when there are so many free tools to use?

In the run up to the launch of the new computing curriculum, as well as after it was phased in, there was a collective intake of breath from teachers up and down the country as they absorbed what it all meant.

For many teachers the notion of writing and debugging programs or explaining simple algorithms was well beyond their every-day experience and certainly not in their training.

Thankfully at the time there was already a string of free web based tools out there to use and a couple of these have proved really successful like Scratch, Kodu & Minecraft.

With all the free tools that some school enthusiasts started to champion it soon became apparent that while they were free there was little if any support or influence on how products developed – how could there be if the tool was free?

The result for some schools has been a bird’s nest of logins for different tools, varying user interfaces, unreliable work saving and patchy levels of school service.  Factors like these undermine teacher confidence who just want it to work.  Schools love saving money but when the cost is not having a reliable learning environment then its surely too high.

The mission at Blippit has been to get key elements of the computing curriculum under one roof and to help develop curious learners through authentic learning – even to the point of publishing project apps made with our App Maker (with the teacher’s approval) on our free app store, Planet Blippit.

Blippit IO, through its powerful and open-ended tools, give teachers the control they need to deliver a tailor made curriculum for their school while not compromising on promoting computational thinking, logical reasoning and (unexpectedly) writing in the wider curriculum.

To try Blippit IO for your school just visit us here and if you decide that Blippit IO would extend and serve your schools’ computing curriculum needs you can upgrade here.  If you find that your school has been registered already, or are given a message that suggests this just contact us & we’ll sort it out for you.

How swearing can be a good way to deal with pain, but socks are good for dealing with slippage

Last week an employee of one of the companies that stores items in the Admiral Storage Facility dropped a box on his foot in the warehouse and swore.  The swear word used was a fairly common one, but nevertheless a word that one might be shocked to hear to come from the mouth of a vicar or a headteacher.  Or come to that a doctor or…   well I am sure you get the point.

No damage was done to the gentleman’s foot, and after a moment’s hopping around and a few short intakes of breath, plus an apology for the verbal outburst, peace, quiet and calm was restored in the world of Admiral.

Back in my office sipping my afternoon cup of tea and taking my 15 minute break as allowed under the “Having a break in the afternoon with a cup of tea Act 1997,” I began to ponder one of the great unanswered questions: why do people swear?

There being not much of interest on TV that night I began to do a little research on the subject, and lo and behold I discovered that three academics from Keele University had indeed undertaken a full investigation into the subject.

What they did was ask a bunch of students who were on the B.Sc psychology course to volunteer for an experiment.  Their reward was to be a £4 voucher to be spent in the canteen.

To get this bountiful offering the students had to place one hand in icy water.  They were then asked to keep their hand in the water for as long as they could, but while doing so they should either remain quiet, speak calmly to the experimenter about how they were feeling but not in any way swear, or swear vociferously and forcibly.

During the process the students were wired up to a variety of machines, the purpose of which I now forget, but which were all undoubtedly very serious and important and included things like measuring heart rate, sweating on the brow, frowning, and other facial movements and so forth.

What they found was that taking into account individual differences concerning pain thresholds and pain perception, the swearing group were invariably able to cope with pain more readily than the other two groups.  These swearing people also reported a lower rate of pain perception compared with the other groups – again taking into account individual differences.

This would suggest that swearing actually has some sort of beneficial effect – which is presumably why it has caught on.

But this led me to wonder what is happening now that swearing has become much more a part of everyday life than it ever was before.  Does that mean that the effect of swearing when faced with pain is lessened?

Apparently the answer is yes – unless one swears very loudly – much more loudly than the individual would normally talk.   And from this it was discovered that it wasn’t so much the swearing that relieved the pain but the doing of something one would not normally do.

Thus people who swore a lot but tended to do it as part of their everyday speech needed to swear at high volumes and a lot in order to reduce the effect of pain.  On the other hand, people who didn’t swear and tended to be fairly quiet could in fact relieve the pain simply by shouting quite a bit.

Now for most of us that would have been enough – but not for this research team.  At the time of the research temperatures outside were dropping, and the next day there was a lot of ice on the walkways around the university.

A separate research team had been waiting for this eventuality for some time in order to carry out their own experiment which involved putting thick woolly socks on over regular shoes to enhance the grip as one walks on ice and snow.  The research proceeded to the expected results – that putting thick woolly socks on over normal shoes does help stop one slipping.

However they also found that a number of students refused to take part in the experiment.  Indeed one who did take part and confirmed that he obtained extra grip, then declined to wear the socks thereafter as “they looked stupid.”  He took the socks off, took two steps along the path, and promptly slipped over and shouted out a couple of swear words.

On hearing of the research findings of the team using the bucket of iced water, the team with the socks concluded that given that they had only a limited number of socks available their best bet would be to offer the socks to students who were not prone to swearing, since they didn’t have an obvious way of relieving the pain.

Fortunately, the weather as I write this is bright and fine.  However, come next winter I do intend to introduce socks into the area around the Admiral storage facility.

As a mode of teaching and learning LOtC is probably the most powerful system that we have.

Our aim in setting up Learning Outside the Classroom Week is very simple – we want to encourage educators in schools across the UK who don’t engage in LOtC to do it. And we want those who do it occasionally to do it more.

Why? Because learning outside the classroom works. Indeed, as a mode of teaching and learning LOtC is probably the most powerful system that we have.

In believing this, the team behind Learning Outside the Classroom Week has been searching for the answers to two simple questions:

  1. What is it that encourages educators to become involved in LOtC?
  2. What is it that stops some educators in schools from becoming involved in LOtC?

The answer to the first question is obvious (or so we think).

Indeed, pupils and students can gain enormous benefits from LOtC that they either would not gain from learning inside the classroom or at the very least would not gain so quickly.

Such as, that learning outside the classroom is more readily remembered than learning inside the classroom. And that learning outside the classroom can also help pupils and students to develop socially and mentally.

There are also huge benefits for schools – benefits which parents are very quick to pick up on and which thus make the school more popular and parents more willing to get involved.

In asking the second question we quickly realised that there are several basic issues here, but that one barrier to LOtC is more prevalent than any other?

After analysing the results of a survey issued to educators in UK schools, both primary and secondary school teachers stated that transport was the main issue (50% secondary, 34% primary). Or, more specifically, the cost of transport.

So how can this be overcome?

In getting your school involved with LOtC Week which is running from the 27 June to the 1 July 2016 you will be privy to a wealth of information surrounding the issue of transport, including transport costs, restrictions, legalities, and regulations.

This information has been supplied by Benchmark Leasing – a company which specialises in the leasing of school minibuses and without whom LOtC Week and the research conducted ahead of the Week’s launch would not be possible.

I do hope you will take a look at the LOtC Week website (www.learningoutside.info/) and take advantage of all it has to offer. And if you find we haven’t covered a particular topic, please do email Jenny Burrows at <a href=”mailto:HQ@LearningOutside.info”

What can you say when the pupil or student turns up with a new, but unplayable, instrument?

It is one of the most embarrassing moments – when a pupil or student who is enthusiastic to learn to play a musical instrument comes to the first lesson with something that is, quite simply, unplayable.

How does one tell the parent – and indeed the child – that lessons can’t meaningfully start now, because the instrument is not up to standard?

There is only one complete way around this problem and that is to tell the parents exactly what they need to buy, and what they need to avoid, before the process starts.

Of course, you may well already have this in hand, and if so I won’t take up more of your time.  But if you feel that some parents with pupils or students in your school may be tempted to go out and buy an instrument that is completely inappropriate for their son or daughter, then we’ve an idea that may help you.

Please click here to find some advice which you may want to send out to parents and/or put on your school website – a letter which warns parents about the hazards of buying a particular type of musical instrument.

If you wish to hand it out to parents, or email them when they sign up to start lessons, please do so.  You can, of course, put it on headed pager if you wish.

The letter does include a mention of ourselves, as a source of instruments, which I hope you will find acceptable within the context.

If you have any questions or queries about the services and instruments we offer, we are of course very happy to oblige.

Safety over cost, a practical example of the problems faced by mathematicians, engineers and businesses.

So that students can see how important maths is to our businesses and to our building industry we have put together a practical problem solving exercise called The Oil Rig Platform.  It is designed to simulate the workings of a team of engineers, trying to find a solution to a problem by building an oil rig platform.

The students are divided into small teams and challenged to build a model of an oil rig platform and work out how much it costs to build using only set materials.  To test for safety the platform must be able to support the weight of a brick!  Will your students design it so cheaply that it collapses or will they spend more money to make it strong and sturdy?

The exercise is suitable for both KS3 and KS4 students and runs over one lesson.  Each team is given the student brief, a set of resources and a deadline.  The winning team is the one who can build the oil rig, support the weight of a brick and is the cheapest to build.  A great learning experience and good fun for everyone.

What’s more – we have made it really easy for the teacher to deliver too!

This resource contains: clear teachers’ guidance notes that explain how to run the exercise, the students exercise brief, resources checklist and the assessment criteria.

How much does this all cost?  Only £20.00 and can be re-used over and over again!

There are more details at…

http://c-l-e.co.uk/buy-teaching-resources-online/oil-rig-platform/

You can pay and download the exercise direct from our website using PayPal or you may wish to pay with either a cheque or a purchase order number. Simply e-mail your purchase order number to us and we will send the exercise to you along with the invoice for payment within 14 days.

A great way to start or round off The Romans topic.

!cid_aefaeaee79801479f5421ec68bd393edPupils can speed through the planning stage and write better Roman stories (in pairs) using my Roman writing frame

I am a children’s author who offers assemblies and creative writing workshops for all ages and abilities. Holding a writing day is a great way to start or round off The Romans topic.

Please email workshop@spartapuss.co.uk for prices and availability.

Thanks

Robin Price

What happens in your Roman assemblies?
Pupils take part in lots of fun and interactive things including: Gladiator fighting to the death; Choose an Emperor and salute them in Latin; Roman Master Chef etc.

How does the writing element work?
I follow the assembly up with ‘flash writing’ workshops where children write their own stories in pairs. This is sure to generate some epic Roman tales!

Who is this for?
Gladiators are a bit too scary for Reception, (I do a special assembly for younger children)  Everyone from Y1 up is welcome to attend my assembly. I tailor the content of each workshop to suit Y1-Y6.

Who are you?
I have written 14 books suitable for ages from Reception to Y6, including The Olympuss Games series (which is set in ancient Rome and Greece in a world ruled by cats.) Parents in Touch said: ‘Please, do introduce them to your child; they are such fun and they will encourage an interest in ancient history.’

What is the biggest problem your SENCo faces, and what can be done about it?

!cid_acfac88ed59c13b6a0fc4563096a0f7eOf course I can’t possibly know the answer to that question as it relates to your school – but I can offer one possible answer which many special needs teachers have given me when I have spoken with them.

And indeed it is an answer that I believe many special needs co-ordinators would agree with.

It is the issue of managing parental expectations in terms of what the school can offer and what the special needs department of your school can do.

Because so many special needs co-ordinators have said that this is a particular issue for them, my colleagues and I who have been working on Special Needs Week have made “Managing Parental Expectations” one of the key themes on the Special Needs Week website.

The aim of Special Needs Week which runs from 13 to 17 June is to help teachers across the school understand the vast range of work that their colleagues in the Special Needs department are facing on a daily basis.

The site contains details of over sixty different special needs that schools are now facing, along with information about products and materials that can be used to support SENCos in their work.

There is also a review of what the law says in relation to special needs for each of the four constituent parts of the UK, as well as a look at the growing issue of mental health problems among young people.

But my own view remains that it is the management of parental expectations that is a core issue for SENCos – which is why our website has a particular focus on this issue.

The article on parental expectations is here, and I do hope that both you and your special needs colleagues find it and the rest of the Special Needs Week website to be of interest. You can reach the home page of the site here.

If you have any thoughts or questions about our work in trying to support Special Needs teachers and raising the profile of special needs among all teachers, I would be very interested in hearing from you.  Please do drop me a line.

12 great maths lessons for £50

 6 DVDs
X 2 Maths shows each
= 12+ maths lessons for just £50

Hello,

Maths on Screen DVDs are the perfect way to enrich maths teaching for 13-16 year-olds, for KS3, KS4, GCSE or whatever curriculum a school follows.  Playable across all regions, they now sell in over 25 countries, including the USA, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, China and elsewhere in Asia, as well as around Europe.

Personalities from TV, business and academia bring lessons to life

Created in association with Maths Inspiration, the innovative live performance company, a box set contains 12 x 40 minute shows, presented by some of the  most inspiring maths speakers from the UK and elsewhere. Covering a wide range of maths topics, each speaker enthuses and engages the student audience. They demonstrate not only why these topics are worth studying, but also how they are applied in the real world, and, tangentially, how maths can open up many career choices.

The presenters include Maths Inspiration founder and best-selling maths author Rob Eastaway, BBC and Discovery Channel TV presenter and ‘Stand-Up Mathematician’ Matt Parker, BBC Sky at Night presenter, Space Scientist and UCL Professor Lucie Green, Emeritus Fellow at Oxford University David Acheson, Senior Lecturer at Cambridge University Dr Hugh Hunt, Software Specialist and Juggler Colin Wright, and many more. valign=”top” width=”616″>

Calling all school fundraisers!

I know Christmas seems a long way away, but registration for our 2016 School Christmas Card Project is now open!

Raise money for your school with schoolchristmascardproject.org.uk

Our School Christmas Card Project allows your pupils to create fantastic, professionally printed Christmas Cards with children’s artwork and raise loads of money for the school. And with absolutely no upfront costs whatsoever, it’s a fantastic, easy and very popular way for schools to raise money for the PTA or other charity.

You can order our free info pack from our website – click here.

Children create their own artwork which is printed on professionally produced cards and other products, which the school sells at a profit to the parents. It is a rewarding and fun project for the children and the whole school to be involved in – and an average school of 250 pupils can easily raise £500 or more! The children will love getting directly involved with school fundraising and parents will love seeing their children’s artwork on professionally printed cards!

We offer packs of Christmas cards, gift labels, thank you postcards and wrapping paper so there’s plenty to choose from!

How much does it cost?

Absolutely nothing! The project is completely free to the school – you just keep the profit! Parents place their orders and pay the school before we ask for any payment at all. We offer very competitive prices and our products are very high quality which means you can maximise the earning potential for your school with accessible and great value cards, labels, thank you cards and wrapping paper. You can view our price table on our website.

If you feel your school would benefit from raising money with the School Christmas Card Project – please visit our website for more information. Alternatively, please forward this email to your school’s art teacher or suitable coordinator for the project.

Thank you for your attention – we know we still have the summer to look forward to, so let’s not wish away the months just yet…if you order your free info pack now, we’ll keep the reindeer in hibernation for a little longer 🙂

Kind regards
Steve
