What is the single most effective way to ensure that your school’s values are clearly and overtly expressed?

There is a widespread feeling that it is right to honour our predecessors, not least to ensure that the fundamental principles that lie behind our current way of doing things aren’t taken for granted.

And one way in which this can be achieved is by commemorating the work of the school and its scholars (past and present) on an honours board displayed in your school’s assembly hall, office, or entrance hall for all to see.

In this way the school is able to communicate its values to parents, pupils, and visitors, clearly and instantaneously.

Furthermore, for schools that have been rehoused in new premises in recent years, the honours board can establish a connection between the exciting new building of today and the previous premises, encompassing the school’s symbolic and momentous history.

Greenbarnes has a long history of creating and supplying honours boards for schools across the UK. You can see examples of such boards on our website.

What’s more, if you can’t find an honours board on our website which corresponds to your school’s design, architectural features, and values, please don’t hesitate to call us on 01280 701093 to discuss what you would like or for any guidance that you may require.

I look forward to hearing from you.

What is the one classroom activity that will enhance your pupils’ confidence in, and enjoyment of maths more than any other?

There are only a limited number of activities around that are designed specifically to increase children’s enjoyment of maths.  And yet the more children do see maths as an enjoyable subject the more confidence they will have in the subject – and the more rapidly their studies will progress.

Which is why we created Magical Maths.

Magical Maths is a school based workshop aimed at either KS1 or KS2 students.  It is taught on a class-by-class basis with up to five classes being taught during the course of the day, with each class session lasting 45 minutes to an hour.

The sessions are based around the notion of magic, and indeed the practitioner who leads the sessions is a member of the Magic Circle.  Children practice and perform the magic tricks that are taught during the workshop – magic which is all based on National Curriculum maths.

As a result the children gain new mathematical insights and revel in their new-found positive relationship with mathematics.

To enquire about a possible booking please call me on 07870 215675 or email Jasmine@Jasminesmagicparties.co.uk with the words MAGIC MATHS in the subject line.

A Key Stage 3 play for lessons, production, and learning about the intricacies of drama

There are plays and there are plays, but sometimes it is particularly helpful to have a play that can not only be developed towards a final production but can also be worked on, in classroom in segments, with each segment making a coherent lesson.

And a play which as well being an event that can be staged in front of an audience can be used in class to examine how the central character (a detective) works and where she is going, as well as how she is characterised, how character motivation is explored, what costumes could be used, etc, etc.

In short, what we have here is a play that can be performed, dissected, re-worked, analysed, considered in terms of its structure, turned into a game, have a different ending (it is a murder mystery, so the outcome is a key element), have audience interaction, become a radio play, and be the basis for research of the genre.

All of these alternatives are available with “Murder at Masons Hotel” a play script complete with associated activities. It is supplied in copiable format so that each student can have his/her own copy of the script, or part of the script, to work on at all times.

The play is set in the 1960s and revolves round the murder of a New York crime boss who is visiting London with his family.  He is shot in his room the night before the announcement of changes to his will, and the play centres around the attempts by two characters to solve the mystery of his death.

An initial investigation by Harriet Hemmings of Scotland Yard fails to make progress until Veronica Holmes (rumoured to be the great great granddaughter of Sherlock) is called in.

The play retains a real sense of drama while also including numerous comic moments.  Many of the characters can be played by either male or female actors.

Murder at Masons Hotel is available as a copiable book, or on CD or as a download.  Each edition comes with unlimited reproduction rights for use within the school. Sample pages can be viewed here http://www.pdf.firstandbest.co.uk/drama/T1838.pdf

From September 2016 all of our teaching resources will be available as downloads, and downloads ONLY. But in the meanwhile…

… we are selling our book titles for just £5 each (discounts of up to 75%) while stocks last.

Over the past couple of decades we have been fortunate to witness an extraordinary technological revolution, yet it is only now that publishers of teaching materials are truly seeing the impact of this.

Indeed, it is only in the last year or so that the popularity of our digital teaching resources has surpassed the popularity of our teaching resources in book format – which is why we have decided that from September 2016 we will be moving to downloads only.

Thus, in the meantime we will be selling all of our teaching resources in book format for just £5 each (discounts of up to 75%) so that we can do away with our book stock and make this transition (from books to downloads), sooner rather than later.

To browse our library of teaching resources and take advantage of our Summer Sale of 2016 (our best summer sale to date), please visit www.topical-resources.co.uk.

History Summer School 2016

The study of history is about a lot more than facts and dates. Questions of the possibility of historical truth, the methodology of its pursuit, and the political responsibilities of historians to both the past and the future are central to the craft of the historian. This course offers the chance to explore these and other historiographical questions using some fascinating (and sometimes weird and wonderful) case studies.

The Debate Chamber History Summer School will be of particular benefit to those students who are considering the study of History, or a related subject, at university. This intensive course will be conducted through seminars, lectures, structured activities and informal discussions, in order to create a genuine sense of what studying history at undergraduate level is like. The topics covered over the five days have been specifically selected to challenge and broaden the historical outlook of participants and as such the course requires no specific previous background knowledge (although students are encouraged to bring their own examples to the questions addressed) and is open to all students aged 15-18. The most important qualification is a strong enthusiasm for history!

The Summer School offers students the opportunity to develop their historical studies by tackling areas of study not often covered by the school curriculum. By exploring new and ambitious topics, students will be challenged to confront the unexamined assumptions underlying their interpretations and to develop their analysis of primary and secondary source materials. The course offers students the opportunity to gain a good basic understanding of a broad range of historiographical trends and subject matters, and as a result, students will not only be well equipped make informed decisions about studying history at university, but will enjoy the challenge of being presented with new ideas, and benefit from having their own thoughts critically examined.

Our approach to tuition is varied – lively tutorial discussions, formal debates, lectures, group presentations and close individual reading of primary and secondary source material. Special emphasis is given to developing students’ skills as critical readers at an undergraduate level, by analysing extracts and quotations, as well as images, material sources and oral accounts. Participants will be supported in formulating and presenting their own viewpoints clearly and logically and be encouraged to challenge one another’s positions in a constructive and friendly atmosphere. Class sizes of 14 students per group allow us to give each student plenty of individual attention and useful feedback.

You can view a full schedule for the course, details of tutors and lots more feedback from last year on our website – www.debatechamber.com/summerschools/history-summer-school/

Feedback from Previous Summer Historians:

Before the History Summer School, I had no idea what studying history beyond the facts could be like. After the summer school, thanks to the brilliant tutors and the challenging curriculum, I have a much more in-depth knowledge of the various theories behind historical study and what it is like to further study history. I’d recommend this Summer School to anyone who has even the slightest interest in history, it was probably the most informative and interesting 5 days of my life!

For me, this course was originally planning to be a sort of wake up from the summer. However, the five non-stop history filled days that we were given meant I didn’t just turn on my brain, I excited it: critically looking at intriguing sources. Due to the huge scope of the course, no matter where your interest is you’re bound to come away with a new one. Then too, the lecturers/teachers provided entertaining and enlightening commentary on the sources and historical events that we covered. Discussion amongst the group was always flowing and I was always left with something bubbling in my mind at the end of the day.

You just really need to go, it has changed my outlook on History and my passion for the subject ten-fold!

I would certainly recommend this Summer School to anybody interested in studying history further. The five days covered a large range of subjects and the tutors were very informative, fantastic at helping everyone be involved in discussions. There was a great atmosphere in the sessions and I felt comfortable contributing. I am really glad I attended.

Practical Details:

By manipulating numbers using mathematical operations, they can be used to serve a variety of purposes in everyday life

Children who handle numbers regularly have a greater understanding of their meaning and are thus quicker to appreciate that numbers can be manipulated using mathematical operations to serve a variety of purposes in everyday life.

However, there are very few teaching resources on the market which exercise such an approach to number (which is surprising when we consider that the majority of children are thought to be kinaesthetic learners).

As a result, we have developed Deck Ahoy! – a resource containing over 100 games and activities where the only equipment you need is a deck of cards.

Suitable for pupils in Years 1 to 6, the resource is designed to support the teaching of number and the mathematical operations that appear in the mathematics programmes of study.

The games and activities therefore do not only explore the main operations – addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division – but also fractions, statistics, time, ratios, squares, and cubes and graphs.

What’s more, the ‘Deck Ahoy!’ card games and activities have proven to work exceptionally well as homework tasks, particularly when you are stretched for PPA time as there are no worksheets to issue or marking to do.

Further information and free sample activities can be found on the website.

What a complex mess! Solving the Problem of Punctuation

Of the many issues faced by teachers in recent times, it was a tiny punctuation mark that forced the government to make a change!

The traditional media were incensed. The Independent told us the ’excitable, text speaking youth of today are being told to curb their exclamation by the Government’ with ‘strict new rules on use of exclamation marks’.

‘How strange!’ wrote The Guardian, it was ‘…effectively proof that the government wants to penalise enthusiasm!’

The Telegraph described it as ‘Nonsense!’ that would take ‘writing back to the 19th century’.

BBC Breakfast debated the issue with linguistic experts who agreed in their ridicule.

Meanwhile a mighty battle erupted on social media between the punctuation pedants and the grammar anarchists, until both sides realised that neither agreed with the government’s stance.

The mounting outrage drove the Department for Education to issue a ‘clarification’ and just to be sure, the Minister of State for Schools published his personal guidance that:

“the exclamation mark will continue to be acceptable in children’s responses in the test” and “pupils will not be marked down for using an exclamation mark for emphasis”…however should they be asked to write an exclamation using the “correct sentence format, starting with ‘what’ or ‘how’, will be required”.

While the exclamation mark was safe, teachers now found themselves charged with teaching not only exclamative sentences but also the ‘variety of sentence forms’ that might end with an exclamation mark!

For many primary school teachers, particularly those without a specialism in English, the new pedantic code is a complex and scary beast. Thankfully teachers can now recruit their own monster: the Punctuation Monsters!

Designed to help teachers retain an emphasis on creativity while meeting the needs of the new curriculum, the ‘Unpunctuated’ series uses a theme of ‘Mermaids & Water Monsters’ to challenge students to rewrite unpunctuated sentences and then consolidate their learning with further creative thinking and writing challenges.

After completing the Challenge Sheets, students can mark their own work (and their friends) with the ‘Sentence Check’ sheets. The whole class can then take part in class challenges to add their own punctuation and rewrite the sentences using the powerpoint challenges included with each module.

Teachers can take confidence from the simple step-by-step guidance to each form of punctuation and they may take a particular interest in: http://thinkythinky.com/shop/exclamation-marks/?ref=33

I Can Write Exclamative Sentences http://thinkythinky.com/shop/introducing-exclamations/?ref=33 How to Use Exclamations (which includes a template to create an Exclamation Comic!).

At just £3 each the modules are excellent value for teachers with plenty of activities to use throughout each term. Full details can be found at www.monsterpunctuation.com

“A great resource – well differentiated and suits my intended purpose of using with intervention groups in Year 2. I particularly like the ‘unpunctuated’ texts as some of my target children struggle to use capital letters and full stops accurately. This was a great time saver! “

How can you prove to prospective students that your sixth form is the right one for them?

It could be argued that it is harder than ever before to convince prospective students to enrol at your sixth form. Why? Because they want tangible proof that your sixth form will support them in achieving the highest A-level results they are capable of.

Indeed, the fact that your sixth form has a faultless mission statement, brand-new science facilities, and offers an extensive range of extra-curricular activities may not be enough.

So how can you prove to prospective students that your sixth form is the right sixth form?

Just one way that you can do this is by presenting your sixth formers’ exam certificates in a presentation folder, branded with your sixth form’s logo, colours and house-style.

This way, when your students are exhibiting their certificates of achievement to their friends, family, and future employers, it portrays the message that your sixth form is responsible for these achievements – this is the proof that prospective students are looking for.

Our presentation folders start from just 48p each and are available in four different styles – Lincoln (A4,1mm), Chester (A4,5mm), Oxford (A5,1mm), Windsor (A5,5mm) – and a choice of 13 different coloured cards with either gold, silver, black, blue, red, or green print.

The perfect complement to Shakespeare: plays by Jonson, Marlowe, Webster and…erm… Sheridan

While all Stage on Screen plays feature regularly on school and higher/further education curriculums in the UK and across the world, you don’t have to be studying our specially staged and filmed productions to benefit from them. Anyone who loves or who is learning Shakespeare will profit from seeing plays by his good friend Ben Jonson, later contemporary John Webster, plus major influencer – and ‘real’ Shakespeare candidate – Christopher Marlowe.

Our current titles are as follows:

Dr Faustus – themes from this Marlowe classic are echoed in Macbeth in particular, but also Othello, Timon of Athens and other plays. Marlowe heavily influenced Shakespeare, and with this, probably his finest play, it’s easy to see why.

Volpone – another play that has echoes in Othello, but which is also interesting for comparison of Jonson’s more classical approach to drama when compared to Shakespeare, his contemporary and great friend.

The Duchess of Malfi – this dark masterpiece by John Webster finds many echoes in Shakespeare with its themes of corruption, cruelty and class, while the use of madness makes an interesting comparison with its treatment in Hamlet.

The School for Scandal – this Richard Brinsley Sheridan comedy of manners was written much later of course, and we can’t by any stretch describe it (let alone him) as a Shakespearean companion. However, we mention it here as it makes up the fourth of our current available titles and, like the others, it’s on many curriculums in its own right. As we currently offer all four titles for a special price, you may wish to consider it.

Approved texts – and all round approval

Each play uses full approved texts (other filmed productions are often heavily cut or adapted), and each is staged and recorded live in front of an audience at London’s Greenwich Theatre.

They’ve all received excellent reviews from students, teachers and academic journals plus mainstream and specialist press.

Here are just a couple:

‘Pitched perfectly to suit both casual and academic audiences, Stage on Screen offers an unparalleled array of material on these productions that will be a welcome addition to those who wish to study early modern dramatists.’ (The Shakespeare Bulletin)

How we are helping an increasing number of schools to remove the barriers to LOtC?

A survey conducted ahead of Learning Outside the Classroom Week (27 June – 1 July) in consultation with Benchmark Leasing has revealed that 34% of primary schools report transport to be the main barrier to offering (more) LOtC to their pupils.

Furthermore, it transpires that there are three things in particular that led the respondents to select transport as a barrier to LOtC: affordability, safety and access.

With this in mind we have devised a number of minibus leasing arrangements to meet the specific and varied needs of schools. To see our top five school leasing arrangements, which we have evolved through feedback, primarily from school managers, please click here.

Affordability

Leasing a minibus with Benchmark can often work out cheaper than buying a minibus outright (especially if one takes into account the re-sale value of a school bus at the end of its working life) or hiring a coach each time.

Safety

Given that the majority of school minibuses on the road are over five years old, it is no surprise that concerns over safety are a barrier to LOtC. Thus, our minibuses are always supplied brand new, so concerns over safety are significantly reduced.

Additionally, our minibus leasing arrangements include routine servicing, replacement of worn tyres, replacement of worn brakes, repair of the exhaust, repair of the battery, and Breakdown Cover for the full term of the agreement.

Accessibility

Some schools report that there isn’t always a licensed driver readily available to drive the school minibus, which limits the amount of LOtC that you and your colleagues can offer.

Fortunately, we have a range of minibus leasing arrangements for minibuses below 3500kg, which means that the school minibus can often be driven by any member of staff who holds a standard car driving licence (subject to meeting certain requirements).

For more information about the minibus leasing arrangements that we offer, including minibus specifications, maintenance and prices, please do visit www.minibusleasing.co.uk or call us on 01753 859944.

Sealsongs – the Tower Hamlets primary school song book – a collection of assembly songs which aims to get children engaged through the experience of making and creating music. Its lyrics were written with considerable input from Year 4 and 5 pupils, so speak from children to children, and the musical backing tracks were professionally recorded.

Key Stage 2 Composing – the complete scheme of work – covers every aspect of primary school creative music making. Each lesson in the book is broken down into five and ten minute blocks, with each step fully detailed and accompanied by explanatory notes for the teacher.

THE CUCKOO ROCK SONGBOOK – includes twelve settings of poems by Phil Bowen.  These magical poems are full of unusual characters, colourful scenes and surprising wordplay; the original book was short-listed for the CLPE prize. The music has echoes of 60’s rock as well as various contemporary styles.

Song 1: On my way to school – about the places and people pupils may see on their way to school, and the thoughts they may have.  It is a fast, jolly and exciting song.

Song 2: Where do you live? – about the different environments in which animals live and the different life-styles they enjoy.  It is a medium-paced and cheerful song.

Song 3: Guess how I feel – about feelings of doubt and how they may be answered.  It is a medium slow, reflective and comforting song.

Reusable identification wristbands for children on school trips!

*** 10% free wristbands with all orders placed before the end of term ***

Why buy identification wristbands for your children? All parents and teachers should be concerned about what happens if they lose a child. It can easily happen – it’s difficult to keep track of 30+ children and if a pupil should become separated or is involved in an accident or incident, any member of the public or venue staff can call the number (on a personalised wristband) and be straight through to one of the teachers on the trip. If all children in your care wear an identity wristband with your mobile phone number written on it, then it could greatly speed up finding them.

Solving a problem that comes with teaching secondary school pupils basic literacy

A common problem that comes with teaching secondary school pupils who require additional support in literacy is that there is often a lack of interesting, informative and age-appropriate, ready-made material available.

Fortunately, Ark Educational has produced the “Literacy Through…”  Worksheets Series, which is a resource containing an extensive range of activity worksheets designed to support your pupils on their journey to becoming confident in their literacy abilities.

The worksheets within the volume are all designed so that they can be used either as a one-off or as a series of highly varied tasks. Activities range from comprehension questions and fill in the gap exercises, to filling in forms and completing a Wordsearch (for example).

Throughout, the volume encourages the development of fundamental literacy skills, such as: comprehension, vocabulary, descriptive writing, grammar, tenses, definitions, phonics, word-building, vowels, compound words and punctuation, among just a few.

What’s more, the resource is divided up into eight sections, each of which is based on a different subject area: Literacy Through… English, Literacy Through… Geography, Literacy Through… History, Literacy Through… ICT, Literacy Through… PE, Literacy Through… RE, Literacy Through… Science and Literacy Through… Technology.

To order the “Literacy Through…” Worksheets Series, simply fill in the order form and send it by fax, email, or post (see contact details below). If you have a school order number, you can also order by phone.

  • Telephone: 01536 399 011
  • Fax: 01536 399 01
  • Email: sales@firstandbest.co.uk
  • Postal address: First and Best in Education, Earlstrees Court, Earlstrees Road, Corby, Northants, NN17 4HH

Alternatively, you can order the “Literacy Through…” Worksheets Series online as a download for £20 by visiting http://www.absent-teacher.com/eworkbooks.html

If you quote HH10% into the message box when you make your purchase on PayPal, you will receive a 10% refund on your order.

The IT chair with a FIVE year warranty…..

Just a few years ago REMPLOY were making great furniture for schools, libraries and other organisations………then sadly the government ‘pulled the plug’ and that was the end of the line for some great educational chairs.

However, the good news is that another UK firm has taken over production of the best of the Remploy chairs, the EN series. The EN series chairs are known for their superb build quality, ergonomic design and comfort……as well as having a FIFTEEN year warranty for some of the models.

The EN 50 IT chair is, in our opinion, one of the best IT chairs available. A gas lift mechanism adjusts seat height from 390 mm to 520 mm and the superb ‘flexi-back’ relieves back pressure and tension. Fitted with a five star base and a choice of castors, glides or pressure locking castors the EN 50 is not only well engineered but looks great in a choice of 15 attractive colours…. in schools, colleges and universities… AND it has a FIVE year warranty.

The EN 50 IT chair can be obtained from Central Educational Supplies Ltd.,

Further details can be found on the website:

Does the way a school treats parents make any difference to the way parents respond to the school?

It is one of those things that generally just happens: the school has a way of liaising with parents, and very quickly it becomes the natural and obvious way of doing things, continued without much change from year to year.

And yet several analyses have shown that there are currently four different models that schools in the UK use when liaising and dealing with the parents of their pupils and students.

More to the point, the approach that a school adopts to dealing with pupils and students can have quite a profound effect on the way parents respond to and support the aims and actions of the school.

In short, the support that a school gets from the parents is dependent on the way the school treats the parents in the first place.

The view that there are four different ways in which parents can be dealt with by schools, and that this affects the way parents co-operate with the school, was originally set out in a lecture by Tony Attwood at the University of East Anglia.  This lecture has now been reproduced in a brief summary paper, and this is currently available for download free of charge.

To obtain the article simply complete the form by supplying your email address (no other information is requested), and a copy of the article will be sent to you.
