Why an increasing number of schools are delivering lessons for exam preparation throughout the whole of their students’ educational career.

An increasing number of schools are finding that by delivering lessons for exam preparation throughout the whole of their students’ educational career, their students are more able to cope with the pressure of exam and thus achieve higher levels of attainment.

Furthermore, an increasing number of schools are also finding that such an approach to exam preparation isn’t just ideal, but indeed, that it is essential – not least because a fair amount of GCSE examinations are now taken earlier by students.

To support you in delivering lessons for exam preparation at regular intervals throughout your students’ educational career, Positively MAD has devised the Exam Busters workshop (our most popular workshop).

This flagship workshop has been received by over 550,000 students and teaching staff across the UK, with many schools repeating on an annual basis.

In just 2 hours, using an engaging and entertaining delivery style, our Positively MAD (Making A Difference) presenter will motivate your students to think and act positively about their exam preparation.

The students are given exercises to help de-stress and overcome nerves and shown regular review techniques to shift information from short to long term memory. They are also introduced to innovative tools which help improve their learning by boosting recall and revision.

Many students comment on how this multisensory learning experience has transformed their thinking from revision being boring and difficult to it being fast, fun and effective. Improving their attitude, recall and most importantly results.

You can find more information about our Exam Busters workshop by visiting www.positivelymad.com/Secondary/Exam-Busters.

If you would like to discuss any specific requirements for your school, please call our office staff on 0844 8094850 or simply email us at info@positivelymad.co.uk.

We look forward to hearing from you soon.

Committed to your success!

What is the single most effective way of raising student exam grades?

There is little more frustrating than a student who you know has plenty of ability within a subject, but who simply does not seem to be able to study and reveal his/her aptitude in exams.

Fortunately, however, there is a fairly simple way of helping such students overcome this situation so that they make far more of their study time, learn more rapidly, and develop an ability to use the knowledge that they have gained within examinations.

This approach breaks learning into two simple parts: learning how to study, and then applying this knowledge to the subject matter being studied.

Self-evidently, once the student can study in a more effective and efficient manner the student also becomes more adept at reproducing this knowledge in a meaningful way when required. Then, inevitably, the student’s grades will go up.

This is where Raising Grades through Study Skills comes in. The volume, which is available either as a photocopiable master or on CD (so that it can be placed on the school’s learning platform), focuses on the ways in which students can both be helped and can help themselves by learning more quickly and more effectively.

Since the first edition of this work was published it has been adopted in several thousand schools, in some cases being used within an individual department, sometimes across the whole school.

22 separate methods of learning are detailed in the volume, plus details of 10 teaching methods which can be used to help develop the learning approaches.

There is also a series of active learning assignments and a further 15 sections on memory and how students may enhance their own memory abilities and increase their ability to utilise the knowledge that they have gained.

Results from the use of this approach have shown that once students have been shown how to study and how to ensure that they can remember and use the material they have studied, the motivation gained from the rapid success that results becomes a factor in motivating them to ever further achievements.

The activities developed in this volume can either be set up as separate lessons or can be integrated into the existing timetable.

Raising Grades through Study Skills is available as a photocopiable book or on CD Rom which can itself be copied or loaded onto the school’s learning platform or intranet.

The way your students are revising may be letting them down in exams – and here’s why

An article in The Guardian outlines four ways in which your students should change how they revise to improve their revision success and exam performance. These are… 1) Test, don’t recognise, 2) Space, don’t cram, 3) Effort, not flow, and 4) Practise output, not input.

I am particularly interested in “Test, don’t recognise” and “Practise output, not input” because these are things that Education Quizzes (which is free for a whole year) can help your students with:

1. Test, don’t recognise

“The most common form of study is the one that gives “revision” its name – literally just looking at the thing you want to learn again. The problem with this is that we mistake our ability to recognise something for an ability to recall it.”

“Recognition and recall are different psychological processes.”

4. Practise output, not input

“While it may feel good to get completely familiar with the material before practising writing answers, it omits from our study practice the exact skill we are marked on…. For any test, we need to rehearse exactly the thing we’ll be required to do.”

Which is what makes using Education Quizzes as a revision tool so effective. And there may still be time to share Education Quizzes with your GCSE students (depending on the exam board) for some effective last minute revision.

What’s more, as our Education Quizzes can be accessed by students on their laptops, tablets and smartphones, your students can make the most of their study leave with the ability to revise anytime, anywhere.

If. however, your GCSE students have already taken their GCSE RE exam, you can still use Education Quizzes with your Key Stage 3 students and prospective GCSE students for RE revision throughout the year and in the lead up to future examinations.

The simple solution to ensuring a hassle free start to lessons and exams……..

Every now and again I get to chat with current or former teachers and one of the topics that often crops up is why many students don’t seem to be able (or willing) to bring a pen, pencil, ruler etc to their lessons.

Apparently this causes a fair bit of disruption while some students try to beg, steal or borrow the basic kit they need to benefit from their lesson.

In an attempt to solve this problem there’s a product called the Student Essentials set,” which, as the name suggests, contains all the basics that students need for most  lessons.

Consisting of  three quality black ink ballpens, two full length HB pencils, eraser, 15 cm ruler and a metal sharpener, all packed in a A5 size, clear PVC “exam friendly” wallet with a zip slider.

From just 75p each (ex vat) the “Student Essentials set”  is a convenient and cost effective solution to the problem of students who don’t have the correct kit for lessons. It’s particularly useful at exam time……

How can the hall in which students take examinations affect the results they achieve?

Almost every institution that runs examinations acknowledges that some students can underachieve because of a feeling of nerves as they enter and sit down in the exam room.

However, it is only recently that schools and universities have started to consider the impact on students that the room in which the examinations take place can have.

But when it comes down to it, the room certainly can have an impact. For example, if you are using a room that has no sound-absorbing material, then every chair movement, every pen drop, is going to be heard by many of the students.

For those students who are readily able to focus on their exam this will hardly matter, but for those who are suffering from exam nerves, such extraneous sounds can totally disrupt their already shaky thought patterns.

Which is why schools are now investigating the Smartsquare carpet system. It is made up of 2m x 1m tiles designed temporarily to transform a large hall into a carpeted venue so it can be used for examinations and indeed other events.

Smartsquare carpet systems come with a purpose-built Smartcart trolley designed to hold approximately 200m² flooring. The trolley is built with non-marking wheels, and the average school hall will only require between 4m² and 7m² of floor space for storage.

It is these trolleys that are the key to the efficiency of the system as they can be moved around as the tiles are being laid, enabling quick and efficient installation.

When not in use Smartsquare carpets pack neatly away into the Smartcart.

And best of all, the carpet tiles are very easy to maintain. To clean a badly soiled tile you simply take it outside, hose it down, and leave to dry.

Smartsquare can be purchased outright or bought on a lease over a period of time.  It is also available on a two-week free trial – along with a Smartcart – so you can see for yourself.

Furthermore it is not only possible to transform a sports hall or other large area into an exam hall, but such rooms can also be transformed into areas suitable for end of year awards ceremonies, conferences, etc.

You can read more about Smartsquare on our website.    Or if you would like to talk about these possibilities please do call us on 01302 836 777 or email jon@smart-square.co.uk.

“Gengis Khan” returns to schools in east London……..

The word on the street is that a group of east London teachers are taking the law into their own hands in an effort to deal with pupils who turn up to their lessons without a pen, pencil or ruler etc.

According to “The Walthamstow and Leytonstone Guardian” (established in 1897) a group of teachers dressed in black cloaks and carrying mock Gengis Khan swords has been threatening to put certain pupils in makeshift stocks on Leytonstone High road.

Indeed, so effective were their efforts that the incidence of pupils failing to bring pens, pencils etc to their lessons has fallen dramatically.

There is an easier way…………

The “Students Essentials set” contains three quality ballpens (black ink), two full length HB pencils, 15 cm ruler, eraser, metal sharpener, all contained in a convenient “exam friendly” clear PVC wallet with a zip slider.

Designed for students who tend to turn up for lessons and exams without the basics, “Student Essentials sets” are a simple, effective and low cost solution. From only 75p each, ex vat. Whether you sell them or give them away they should make life easier for both pupils and teachers… and reduce wasted time and hassle at the start of lessons or exams.

How can you ensure that your students are performing at their best on the day of the exam?

One of the biggest arguments against timed linear exams is the requirement for students to demonstrate what they have learnt during two years of study in just a few hours – which is somewhat unjust when we consider that adolescents are prone to having a bad day.

It is for this reason that we have devised Exam Buster – a workshop that is delivered on the morning of the exam(s) which will get your year 10 and 11 students geared up and ready to take on any challenge that they may face in the exam hall.

The workshop is short, sharp and to the point, offering your students advice on how to manage stress in the exam hall and demonstrating good exam practice, such as the importance of reading questions carefully.

One session lasts for 45 minutes and can be delivered to as many as 100 students at a time.

Is there a “most effective” way to prepare secondary school students for their upcoming exams?

Primary schools across the UK have refused to take part in a series of tests because they are making children tearful. Unfortunately, this is not an option for secondary schools, even though older students can experience these same overwhelming emotions when it comes to exams.

So what is the most effective way of supporting your students in dealing with the pressure of exams?

One way which has proven to be highly effective comes from looking at how new recruits in the army prepare for combat. Many of the skills that new recruits have to acquire would be beneficial to students who are struggling to deal with the pressures of exams.

This is because everyone involved in a mission knows that success is not a possibility; it is essential. There are no second chances. This gives them the motivation and determination that students need in order to perform well in their exams and achieve their desired results.

Such skills include application, attention to detail and focus, the avoidance of excuses, and, above all, a determination to succeed, no matter what.

It is for this reason that upon leaving the army I formed Major Motivator – to share these invaluable skills (which are central to army training) with young people through a range of fun, inspiring, and motivational seminars.

Your pupils will be shown a wide range of innovative strategies to help them tackle the array of challenges that they face between now and their exams – from being overwhelmed by the sudden increase in their workload, to coming to terms with the greater onus placed on them to manage their own revision.

Whatever challenges your students are facing with regard to their upcoming exams, our team of dedicated ex-military staff will equip them with effective revision strategies that we have acquired (and adapted) from schools across the UK.

It is essential that young people today realise that their future success is under their control.

If they want it enough, if they are determined enough, they can succeed.

You can find more information about the different ways that we work with schools by visiting www.majormotivator.co.uk. Alternatively, you can call us on 01536 399010 or email us at info@majormotivator.co.uk.

What is the most effective way of ensuring that your pupils are on track for the new key stage two tests?

The inconsistent rate at which children develop their academic abilities makes predicting their performance and the outcomes of the new key stage two tests somewhat of a challenge.

Which is what makes measuring and tracking progress throughout Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 so important – so changes in the rate of their development can be taken into account when predicting your pupils’ key stage two test outcomes.

Of course, you and your colleagues will already have an established system for tracking the progress of your pupils in each year and subject area. However, such systems are unlikely to tell you how your school compares with others and where you should target interventions.

It is for this reason that we have developed Optional Tests – to help you assess your key stage two pupils’ progress accurately, reliably and on a much larger scale.

Optional Tests are tests that can be used alongside a wide range of approaches to assessment and reporting, which means you don’t have to abandon your current progress tracking procedure in order to improve it.

The tests will help you measure your pupils’ strengths, weaknesses, and potential, and when they are used alongside our Testbase ready-made assessments you will be able to make accurate judgements, provide support, and produce a range of diagnostic reports.

Our tests reflect the content of the new National Curriculum and the style of the new national tests for Key Stage 2. They have been through a vigorous standardisation process – we’ve worked with over 100 schools to produce the questions and the mark schemes.

Once your pupils have completed the tests, simply upload your pupils’ marks into our free online mark-capture and reporting app. We will then produce real-time diagnostics which will tell you how your school compares with others, what your pupils’ strengths and weaknesses are, where you should target interventions, and whether you pupils are on track*

*Available once the new Key Stage 2 national curriculum test (SATs) standard is established.

You can find more information about Optional Tests by visiting our website or calling us on 0845 145 1500.

Does it matter to students whether they revise using a book, a mobile, or a tablet?

There is a body of opinion that holds the view that one of the factors that can reduce a student’s willingness to revise is that the revision may well involve a textbook or set of notes.

The reasoning is that because the student’s everyday life is focussed on digital devices, such as tablets and mobile phones, this makes it less likely that they will revise during the journey to and from school, during the lunch break, or indeed when at home unless they can do so on their tablet or mobile.

Further it is argued that if revision material were to be available on digital devices it is likely that some of the more revision-averse students could be drawn into doing a bit more homework.

We’d very much like to know your views on the subject, and so we’ve set up a short questionnaire and would appreciate if you could complete it.

There are only five questions and it really will only take one minute to answer them. Your answers will be very helpful in directing the way revision materials are developed for students in the future.

Please click here to take part in the survey.

If you would like to know our findings just let us know by replying to this email, and we’ll send out the results in a few weeks.

Auditory Learners and Government and Politics in the Digital Age.

As all good teachers know, a lot of people learn best by listening.  That’s fine in the classroom, but send them home with some reading to do for homework and it just doesn’t sink in.  These auditory learners don’t get on as well with the written word.  Fortunately, there is a wealth of programmes, videos and podcasts available for immediate download across the Internet.

But, as ever, the key to exam success is to make sure what they listen to is relevant to the specification and in student-friendly language.  That’s where Debates in Politics comes in.  Not only does each debate cover a key issue in relation to the AS and A Level Edexcel or AQA exam board specification, it also includes exam-style questions, that help you prepare them for the exam. The accompanying printed materials including detailed transcripts mean both your visual and auditory learners will keep pace.

Specification-specific editions are so far available for Edexcel and AQA. Click on the links below for prices and previews.

A troublesome problem for students and teachers alike…. but now there’s a simple, low cost and effective solution

Have you ever wondered how many lessons each day might be disrupted simply because  a few  students forget to bring the basic kit to their lessons.

No pens, no ruler, no pencils. This usually means wasted time while some students beg, steal or borrow what they need before any teaching can take place.

It can lead to frustration among those students who DO have what they need. They want to get on with the lesson but get fed up with the delay……and quite often there’s a bit of disturbance until everyone’s ready for the lesson to begin.

It can also add to the stress experienced by teaching staff if their lessons are cut short because of  delays.

But now there’s a simple and effective solution…  The “Student Essentials” set.

The “Student Essentials” set contains all that students need for most of their lessons… it contains three quality black ink pens, two full length HB pencils, a 15 cm ruler, a metal sharpener and an eraser, all packed in a clear, “exam friendly” A5 size wallet with a zip-slider.

If “Student Essentials” sets can be made available at the start of a school day,  perhaps from the school office or library, then at least students will have an opportunity to obtain what they need for most lessons. Disruptions and delays can become a thing of the past.

Details of “Student Essentials” sets can be found on the Signpost Educational website:
www.signposteducational.co.uk

“Student Essentials” sets (from just 75p ex vat) can be obtained from Signpost Educational Ltd, PO Box 999, London, E14 6SH

“It looks like we have a problem. We have 319 students entered for the exams, but only 248 exam desks. What can we do at such short notice ?”

Sometimes it’s only at the last moment that someone realises  there’s a shortfall. If this happens it’s panic all round and a desperate search  to find a supplier who can deliver more exam desks at short notice.

If you need exam desks in a hurry then Central Educational Supplies can probably help. They can be contacted on: 020 7515 1797 or email: signpost@talk21.com

For exam desks, folding chairs plus a wide range of classroom tables, chairs and storage you can check out the options on their website or give them a call on 020 7515 1797 or email your requirements.

It’s not too long before the exam season when sometimes there may be a bit of panic in the air …. and not just for students facing their GCSE or A level exams!

Judging by the comments we’ve had from staff over the years, it seems that “the powers that be” in their school or college suddenly decide they need some new exam desks…. and they want them yesterday!

If you’re faced with such a situation (or even if you don’t have such a tight deadline) then why not give us a call (tel: 020 7515 1797) or visit our website to see how we might be able to help.

We can supply folding , cantilever or “zimmer” style desks from only £15.95 ex vat, as well as transporters for folding desks. We can often supply exam desks at short notice although it’s always easier if we have a few weeks notice!

PS. If you’re also in the market for new classroom tables and chairs you may find what you need on our website…… or why not call us to discuss?

When the School of Education Administration launched its School Efficiency courses no one quite knew which efficiencies schools would report.

But now we’ve seen it in action, and the savings schools are making are really extraordinary.

Among the most dramatic savings being achieved through efficiencies are those made to school meals arrangements, the way photocopying is organised, IT provision, school cleaning contracts and the movement to an automated text system.

The next 10 week Certificate in School Efficiency course (taught by distance learning) closes its intake of students on 11th May. The course commences on 21st May. It costs £249 plus VAT.

The next one year Diploma in School Efficiency course will also close its intake of students on 11th May with the course commencing on 21st May 2012.

There are still some places available on both courses.
