How will you handle the Frontline18 preliminary material for this summer’s B063 exam?

For many teachers, the pre-release element of the OCR GCSE is a particularly demanding area to teach. The need to relate the unit theory to a highly specialised context requires many hours of careful research by teachers before they are in a position to support their students.

The essential Pre-Release Resource Pack from ZigZag Education puts everything into context, at the same time taking all the pressure off the teacher.

Not only does it provide comprehensive theory notes, recap questions and research links for every bullet point on the pre-release material, but it also includes a full practice paper with mark scheme – ideal for a mock exam.

See every page online before you buy at zigzag.at/UM31 (click on the Preview button)

Here are a few comments from ICT teachers who have been using the resource pack:

‘An invaluable resource…Closely matches the specification and gives accessible information for each bullet point in the pre-release. The range of content and activities incorporated mean that the resource can be used both in the lesson and for independent study…I am sure that many centres teaching this specification will purchase this.’ (J McKenzie, Head of ICT, independent reviewer)
‘This is an excellent resource…definitely something that I would use with my students studying this topic. There is nothing that I dislike with the resource. It takes away some of the guesswork as to what will be in the exam.’ (G Millbery, experienced ICT author & senior examiner, independent reviewer)
‘The resource has it all… Contains a lot of detail and covers everything well… lots of questions for each section (with answers), and also some exam-style questioning… If this doesn’t help the kids pass, I’m not sure what will!’ (W Goodwin, ICT Teacher, independent reviewer)

Large scale 3D routing – at a staggering discount

There’s little doubt that laser cutters have positively changed the outcome and expectations of students within the design technology curriculum.

What’s more, many schools have found that a 3D router is a beneficial extension to this technology, mainly due to their ability to work on large scale projects and with thicker, more durable materials.

As a result, the manufacture of real or full size project pieces such as furniture is a rewarding experience, encompassing a true to life manufacturing experience.

The cost of a large scale router can be more expensive than a medium format laser cutter. However we have one exhibition model Suregrave Gryphon (1220 x 610 mm), available on a first come first served basis.

The price has been reduced by a third on the exhibition Gryphon router (usual price £14,995) making the price £10,000 plus VAT.

You might also be interested in knowing that Trotec machines can be purchased outright or through our special finance for schools package which can spread the cost over and up to five years.

Additionally, you can keep the Gryphon covered against breakdown for the cost of an annual service for £499 anywhere in the UK mainland.

There’s more information on the Suregrave Grythpon on our website at http://www.suregrave.com/gryphon.html.

To find out more about any of the above, or to register your interest, email us at sales@troteclaser.co.uk and we’ll get back to you.

Do your table tennis bats last a full school year?

Do your table tennis bats last for a term? A month? A week? We have a solution that lasts much longer and we will even send you a free sample.

We understand the problem. It’s simply too tempting for the children to pick at the rubber that covers the wooden blade whilst waiting for their turn to play. Tempting it may be, but in no time at all, the bat is rendered useless and confined to the rubbish bin.

So, how do we solve the problem?

By switching from traditional table tennis bats to the Tacteo range of composite bats from Cornilleau.

But what about the playing performance I hear you ask?

Fear not. The Tacteo 30 Schoolsport bat from Cornilleau is the answer to the problem. The bats are shock resistant with a solid core and non-detachable covering. They are ergonomic, comfortable to use and the new Grip+ covering ensures a great playing performance.

For further product information please click below:
www.uktabletennis.co.uk/acatalog/tacteo_30_schoolsport_bat.html

At a special schools rate of £33 for a box of 6 and FREE delivery, they represent great value for money. And if you need to be further convinced then we would be happy to send you a sample free of charge.

As the market leader in table tennis, we also have the full range of Cornilleau table tennis equipment available.

To order your bats directly, to request a free sample, or for any further information, simply e-mail us at: nicola.waters@uktabletennis.co.uk

What is the most effective use of the first 10 minutes of each class?

The first ten minutes of any lesson is the period when the student’s attention is at its highest. So everything done during that period will have an additional impact.

This of itself is good. But when that impact leads to extra confidence in maths, it is even better.

One of the most effective ways of utilising the opening ten minutes and developing confidence is to use the whiteboard to present students with a range of revision questions drawn from across the syllabus. Within this process, known as a Brain Gym, the students then work in small groups of two or three to evolve the right answer.

Working in this way gives students time to process the answers so it’s not always about who can answer the question first. Rather the students can listen to each other and can all become engaged no matter what their abilities are.

After the results of the students’ work are in, you can see if there is any general misconception among the students about any point tested, and from this you’ll know of any areas of the syllabus you need to revisit.

Many of the processes within each ‘gym’ are found in several concepts of the KS3 Scheme of Work and can bring about a noticeable change in pupils’ confidence in their use of fractions, percentages, and division and multiplication skills.

This resource uses Microsoft Excel and has twelve gyms for each month. The price is £39.99 + VAT.

Once purchased the CD can be freely copied and networked throughout the school.

FAWNS LAUNCHES NEW D.I.Y PLAY BRAND – BRINGING COMMUNITIES TOGETHER WHILE SAVING SCHOOL’S ££££’S –

RALLY THE TROOPS, ROLL UP YOUR SLEEVES AND GET BUILDING! 2012, the year where we are all being encouraged to get outside and interact with our community – from sporting events and activities drawn from the Olympics to street parties and celebrations for The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. As a result, and in keeping with Mr Cameron’s ‘Big Society’ plans, Fawns Playtime is launching the new ‘DIY Play’ brand which will see community spirit surge!

The launch of the new ‘DIY Play’ brand is a range of Fawns’ existing play equipment which can be purchased and installed by the schools themselves – while making them a potential saving of up to 35%.

Fawns, who will be launching the ‘DIY Play’ brand at the forthcoming Education Show, have recognised the ongoing need for schools to improve and renew their outdoor play spaces while coping with dwindling funds and grants. However with so much emphasis being placed on communities pulling together, in some cases gaining local support can swing a grant application, Fawns have also acknowledged that many schools have an outstanding resource available to them, namely parents and members of the community, who have the skills to help pull the project together and install play equipment to create a play area for their children.

James Gowans, Head of Sales for Fawns’ comments: “This is a great opportunity for schools to pull whole communities together in amazingly worthwhile projects that could result in the transformation of outdoor areas which can be ultimately benefited by children, not just pupils of the school but from the local area too – while saving the school considerable amounts of money.”

So if you supply the elbow grease and a few basic tools, spades, buckets, wheel barrows, and oodles of enthusiasm, Fawns will provide the equipment. Including top quality play grade timber from sustainable sources – which comes with guarantees of up to fifteen years – highly durable HDPE, and all the required fixings, instructions and materials as well as one of Fawns’ experienced contracts team supervisors to oversee the project.

Fawns will even generate drawings and visuals to work to in advance, give you an indication of timescales and offer advice on the best way to go about such a project.

James concludes: “Imagine the feel good factor of pulling together the school family to create something so worthwhile and beneficial to the school, something the parents will see every day as a reminder of their hard work.”

The launch of Fawns’ ‘DIY Play’ brand coincides with the introduction of a new grant which has been made available – a £1million fund to help reinvigorate Queen Elizabeth II Fields Funds – part of the SITA Trust.
The programme is part of the Queen Elizabeth II Fields Challenge, a fantastic campaign to protect 2012 outdoor recreational spaces in communities all across the country as a permanent living legacy of Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee, led by the Fields in Trust and HRH the Duke of Cambridge.*

Media Studies digital advertising resources for Key Stage 4 & 5

Nearly every field of employment, across every industry, is dependent on digital technology. Within the creative and media industries, advertising has had to adapt to the rapid development of digital technology, and now digital media is integral to a vast array of advertising campaigns.

Advertisements can be used in the classroom in a multitude of ways, from sparking a discussion about changes in attitudes to gender and race, to introducing students to generic conventions or key aspects of textual analysis and media theory. Covering a whole campaign across multiple media-platforms allows you to deliver learning about complex issues such as audience and ideologies while ensuring that your students have a clear understanding of the multi-faceted media world they are all very much a part of.

The History of Advertising Trust has developed an online digital advertising case study, full of examples of real advertising campaigns and multi-use classroom resources, to help you to support your students in their creative and media learning.

The focus of this resource case study is Lynx, Unilever’s number one male personal care brand, used by over 80% of its target audience (18 to 25 year old men). The case study demonstrates how advertising the Lynx brand has changed with the development of digital media, and how the brand continues to communicate a single, clear message to its target audience, despite using a wide mix of media channels.

Covering mass media distribution, fragmented audiences, personalisation and more, you will be able to use the case study to develop your own teaching material and download the videos and examples for use in the classroom. You will see how Lynx successfully embedded the product within their target audience’s lifestyle through the varied use of mobile phone and Facebook apps, interactive online games, social networking and bespoke websites. View interviews with the advertising agency team responsible for the campaigns to get their opinions on how advertising a brand has changed since the advent of digital and social media and bring your students closer to the real workplace.

Designed to save you time and effort developing lesson plans, at £30 this online resource represents great value for money as it is simple to purchase, quick and easy to download, and adaptable for use in a variety of different ways in the classroom.

Monoprinting lesson plan: KS3 and KS4 art

‘This is a lesson plan that I have used many times at KS4 (although it can also work well with KS3 classes). It is very useful for creating lots of quick ideas and injecting pace into lessons. I have also found it is a good way to avoid students being too ‘precious’ with their work.’

Art teacher Lizzie Allen has written a lesson plan for you to use with your KS4 Art students, introducing them to the techniques needed to record observations using monoprinting.

Getting students to start with short ‘timed monoprints’, Lizzie’s lesson aims to free up students’ observational drawings through experimentation. Students then move on to creating more detailed monoprints, using different tools and marks, whilst creating their own ‘criteria for success’.

To download the lesson plan and the free Boardworks slides, go to: www.boardworks.co.uk/art–design_726

Regards,

The Boardworks Art & Design team

P.S. The interactive monoprinting activity included in the free presentation allows students to explore and practise skills before applying them in their practical work. Teachers Educate Themselves About the Risks of Social Media

Thirty-one teachers at Wistaston Church Lane Primary School were the first in the UK to complete a StaySocialSafe course, aimed at educating teachers on the risks and opportunities of using social media at work and at play.

James Bancroft, deputy head said, “Our school believes that social networking presents a real opportunity for communicating with parents and the community effectively. We recognise the role that platforms like Facebook and Twitter will play in the lives of our pupils in the future. It is vital that our staff have an understanding of the opportunities social networking presents, and also the potential risks of social media in order to protect themselves and our pupils in the future. StaySocialSafe delivered an outstanding course which trained our staff, who have vastly different experiences of using networking. Our staff feel happy that they can enjoy social networking responsibly and we feel more confident about teaching about the e-Safety issues around the internet.”

Participate Ltd launched its StaySocialSafe service in response to growing concerns about how social media is used at work and at play. Social media is truly a revolution in the way we communicate. But already there is evidence that people don’t always understand, how to use it appropriately and the consequences of getting it wrong.

A teacher in Hull facing the sack because of comments made on social media

A Housing Manager in Trafford demoted and pay cut due to comments made to “friends”

Virgin Airways staff sacked for comments made about the company

Employees tweeting negative comments about clients by accident on the company twitter handle.

Having a social media policy offers some protection but, on its own, it is not enough because social media is such a fundamental shift in human communications.

Participate’s StaySocialSafe service has been designed to give people and organisations the confidence to use social media at work and at play without getting themselves or their employer into disrepute (often by accident).

The briefing and seminar sessions are designed to ensure that:

Staff understand how they should use social media at work and at play

Staff know how to manage security settings and behaviour to protect their private lives

Organisations do not lose key staff through a lack of understanding of safe behaviour in social media

Organisations protect themselves from inappropriate social media broadcasting by staff.

Think b4 u Post Your Reputation and Privacy on Social Networking Sites

A person normally wouldn’t shout out the details of a private meeting or give a credit card to a total stranger – yet in effect that’s what people do when they post indiscreetly on social networking sites or are duped by phishing scams.

Social networking has transformed our society – many people of all ages now conduct business, interact with friends, meet new people, and take part in financial transactions via social networking sites.

While there are tremendous benefits to these opportunities and connectivity, there are also hidden dangers and common pitfalls. Even unintentional or seemingly harmless online actions can damage an individual’s security and reputation.

Think b4 u Post is a new DVD resource for classroom presentation and pupil reference that uses a light touch to deliver some very serious information on how people can protect their reputation and guard their privacy online while still having a good time using social networking sites.

Preview Clip

LEARNING OBJECTIVES: – after viewing the 22-minute programme, including free downloadable support material, students will be able to:

A new way to revise: Videos for AS AQA Geography

Hi, my name is Will, and I’d like to talk to you about the Geography videos I’ve filmed.

Last year, I decided to combine my passion for Geography with my love of film-making. As a Geography student myself, I realised that I could talk to students as a peer and help them through their AS Geography exams.

The result is A Level AQA Revision Videos and Worksheets for Rivers, Floods and Management. Each 3–5-minute video is a ‘how to’ for common exam questions – guiding your AS Geographers to achieve top marks.

My teacher, Suzanne Knights, checked all my scripts to make sure all the geography is correct and relevant to the A Level AQA specification. And the videos have now been published by ZigZag Education. I’m pleased to say the videos have received excellent feedback:

‘A really useful resource that will have an impact on your students’ learning and grades… well planned and very easy to use – can be used both in class or as an independent study resource… great breadth and depth… explores the complete course a different form of presentation that students will really value… It will engage students… A must for visually impaired students… The examples cover the specification and this is supported with a high level of terminology.’ (Timothy Dixon, Geography Teacher, Examiner and Independent Reviewer)

To maximise what your students can get out of these videos, worksheets are provided (with answers). Students fill in the answers on the worksheet, consolidating their revision, and allowing you to check their work too.

You can now order the videos and share them with your students.

A radical is a man with both feet planted firmly in the air

The ability for students to be able to quote famous political figures and theorists is a requirement that is commonly overlooked in many Politics resources.

It is with this in mind that we have developed our More Political Quotes resource designed to give students easy access to the range of political quotes available and to help expand their vocabulary in this area.

Quotes from a wide number of figures from the political world are included as well as some unconventional figures.

What’s more, observations have also been included in order to enliven the student’s interest. From “Ideology does not by its nature lend itself to compromise” to “A revolution is legality on holiday” this book contains quotes on every political opinion and view.

This may also stimulate further research into those political figures and theorists – an excellent opportunity for independent learning.

‘More political quotes’ is the perfect accompaniment to studying Politics at any level from AS Level onwards.

The quotes can be printed off each day in order for the students to use them. This task could be given to one of the students themselves, and incentives could be used in order to encourage students to offer quotes.

Students might also add to the resource over time in an attempt to facilitate further research. For example, a quote might be taken and discussed further by the group as a whole.

This resource contains 36 copiable masters which are available as PDF downloads or as a PDF or editable Word files on a CD. The price of £29.99 + VAT is the same for all formats.

Once purchased the CD can be freely copied and networked throughout the school.

How do you tell who hasn’t got a backache?

Laptops and netbooks are wonderful inventions – except when you have to move them en masse from one part of the school to another.

You can of course put them on a trolley, but items can slip off trolleys. And besides, trolleys are wide things that don’t always fit into cupboards.

Which is why some laptops and netbooks get carried around, and why some people, as a result, get a backache.

But here’s a thought: supposing you could put all your laptops and/or netbooks in a suitcase and then (and this is the clever bit) put wheels on the suitcase – just as you have wheels on the suitcase you use when going to the airport.

That’s what the NetRoller netbook store and charge is – a suitcase on wheels that stores netbooks or laptops. And, as a bonus, it charges them too.

The NetRoller is exceptionally lightweight and robust, enabling you to charge and transport up to 16 netbooks up to 10.2” size. The laptop version, the LapRoller, can store 8 x 12” laptops.

What’s more, if storing space is limited, up to 3 NetRollers can be stacked on top of each other.

Each Netroller contains a built-in Electrical Power Management system (EPM) which monitors the amount of current coming from the mains supply which prevents the electric circuits from tripping.

An energy saving feature is also included: the Auto-Power-Off function automatically switches the unit off after a 8 hour charging cycle allowing the unit to charge overnight without wasting energy.

There is more detailed information on our website. Click here for details on the NetRoller and here for the LapRoller. Alternatively call us on 01753 53 99 55 or email us at sales@bretforduk.com for more details.
