What is perhaps the most effective way to ensure that the learning and development of a child isn’t hindered due to his or her anxiety?

When we consider that most children experience anxiety at some point in their time at nursery school, from separation anxiety to social anxiety, it’s important that there is something in place to help relieve the symptoms that typically hinder an anxious child’s learning and development.

Something which has proven to build confidence and ease anxiety over time, not only for young children but for people of all ages, is the use of drama activities. Which is why, with this in mind, we have developed the resource: Drama Activities for the Early Years.

Drama Activities for the Early Years contains 80 clearly laid out and ready-to-use practical drama activities relating to every area of the curriculum, to enable any practitioner to lead and develop dramatic work with confidence and enthusiasm.

The book explains the theories and values behind the activities and how to harness children’s natural abilities and enthusiasm. This way, practitioners with no previous drama experience can confidently create enjoyable and productive learning experiences.

In order to develop vital self-confidence and social skills children need frequent, regular opportunities to work in groups and to express themselves through drama. Thus the resource contains a topic index which links the activities to popular early years themes and interests, making it easy to plan drama sessions or to find a suitable activity for any occasion.

For more information and to see sample materials from Drama Activities for the Early Years, visit https://www.brilliantpublications.co.uk/book/drama-activities-for-the-early-years-453. And if you have any questions about the resource, you can email orders@tradecounter.co.uk.

You can order Drama Activities for the Early Years on our website either in PDF for £12.99 or as a hardcopy paperback book for £17.99. There is also the option to buy the paperback and PDF together at a discounted price of £21.89.

Helping those who are slipping behind, in the most dramatic of ways.

There is one time of the year during which everyone expects something new: September.  Pupils have obviously advanced a year, there may perhaps be some new members of staff, there are new children in the school and this is the perfect moment to suggest a change.

Especially if the change involves the introduction of a new process to aid those children whose literacy attainments were particularly below average during 2016/17.

Indeed, if these pupils then make a great leap forwards in literacy, that change will have a dramatic impact on not just the children and their parents but also on the whole school. Word spreads that something new is happening in the classroom this term.

The approach that can achieve such a dramatic turnaround from the beginning of the academic year uses one-to-one tuition for selected children – but without the costs normally associated with these sorts of initiatives.

Of course, these are bold claims and you will want to see this validated.  This is why we offer a free trial of our approach. If you arrange a trial now, we can ensure this happens in the first half of the coming term.

Through our program, every literacy misunderstanding and every concept not fully grasped is instantly spotted and this results in the pupil being taken back a step for remedial work. After this, progress and advancement resumes.

Each individual’s literacy needs are thus analysed and the pupil is directed to an engaging set of activities which remedy any deficits before advancing through to the next set of skills.

Because the level of instruction is so accurately reflective of the child’s current abilities, the pupil then gets a feeling of success and progress which of itself is highly motivational.

To enable you to see this process in action before making any firm decisions, there is more information about Core 5, the program which achieves these extraordinary results here.

You can also read a variety of case studies here. You can also find on the top right of the page the link to gain full access to the program for 30 days without any payment or commitment.

If you want to know more about the program, please do call 0191 482 1939 or email info@lexiauk.co.uk

What is by far the most time-friendly 3D printer that can be used in schools?

3D printers come with a variety of issues: not least is how much time it takes to produce an object, the design merits and functionality of the products produced, and the environmental impact.

Indeed, what is needed is a 3D printer that produces its items within the time constraints of a lesson, which has none of the environmental impact that (for example) plastic brings, and which produces products that parents will be pleased to have in the house – and indeed pleased to pay for if sold at the school fete.

It is with such ambitions in mind that we have been working on producing a 3D printer for schools which meets all these requirements.

We believe we’ve now done this, and we are now looking for schools to take our 3D clay printers for free for a six week trial,  starting at a date convenient to you from January 2018.

To be clear, there is absolutely no obligation to buy.  We’ve already installed them in several schools, and now we have ten more machines ready to be used in our second phase of free trials.  We deliver at the start and collect at the end.

All you have to do is agree to take a machine for six weeks and use it with pupils and/or students in your school.  Then at the end of the trial let us know how you got on.

Certainly the feedback we had in the last school year has been extremely positive, so you are not taking on a concept which has not been used in schools before.  And I should add that teachers thus far have said the high quality clay products produced by the 3D printer have been well received by parents, and selling to them is a potential source of revenue.

The 3D clay printer is, of course, provided with full training to the relevant member of staff. Example 3D computer-models are provided to begin with and our Vase Creator offers a simple and fast introduction to model design.

In terms of technical details the 3D clay printer has a footprint of 550 x 350mm and a total height with the cartridge loaded of 1235mm.  As for installation, there are no special requirements: the equipment is delivered to the school and carried in by hand at a time convenient to you.

If you are interested in taking a 3D clay printer for six weeks in your school in the spring term 2018, please do call us on 01926 865109 or email mike@claybot.co.uk

There is one simple way of delivering 2.5 hours of additional activity a week to all pupils…

According to the government’s new reports on children and obesity, increased activity not only reduces the chances of obesity but also increases intellectual attainment, while reducing disciplinary issues, improving sociability, and reducing mental health problems.

In fact, increased activity appears to be a wonder cure for both the physical and mental ills that beset some young people.

However, this demand for an extra 2.5 hours activity a week leaves two questions:

First, what is the best way to ensure that children get the extra activity each week that the government now wants?

Second, how can we do this without bringing in new equipment, specialist staff, or supervisors for outdoor activity?  In short, how can we do it as part of our daily work with the staff and equipment that we already have?

It is to help schools answer these questions that imoves has produced a free report for schools on the most effective ways of meeting this government’s objective of making children more active throughout the day, every day.

For the government’s warning (that we are now looking at the first generation of children who are, as things stand, going to be less fit than their parents were as children) is indeed a fundamentally frightening one.

The report, “The Active School”, which answers the question of how schools can help pupils gain all the benefits that accrue from extra activity, is available now, free of charge.

If you would like a copy simply send an email to Active@schools.co.uk and we’ll send you the report back straight away.

If you have any questions about this report, please do email me on enquiries@imoves.com

Helping Children Who Are Victims of Bullying

Teachers and pupils who suspect that someone is being bullied should always offer to lend a hand, even if it is just to listen. Children may have been broken down by their bully therefore they may be afraid to speak out or they may lack trust in people. They may have a very polarised reaction; lashing out could be the beginning of this but they then may withdraw and refuse to socially interact. What can you do to send the message that you and your school are not tolerant of bullying and unacceptable behaviour? How can you help a child who is being bullied? You can:

  • Empathise and share your own experiences
  • See a teaching opportunity for all – why people bully
  • Show them how to set a good example to others
  • Teach them that bullies may be very unhappy too
  • Help them show compassion to others
  • Teach them ways to talk to a bully

Make intolerance of bullies your selling point as a school. Read on for more information on how to help children combat bullying.

He started it all – will you continue it?

Carl Jung was the first to recognise that the psyche, like the body, can heal itself given a safe healing environment.  Another Carl – Carl Rogers added another dimension.

20% of your pupils are likely to have an emotional, behaviour or mental health issue that is preventing them from reaching their full potential at school, at home and in the world.

You will immediately be able identify the ones that cause trouble, disruption and stress but there are also those who are suffering inside.

But most children can’t or don’t want to talk about their problems.

Virginia Axline was the first to develop play as a non-talking non-directive therapy.  Oaklander added the creative arts as therapeutic media.  Barnes joined the two approaches together.

In Play Therapy UK we’ve developed our Integrative Holistic Model over the last 14 years including special features to make it effective for primary schools.  Between 77% and 84% of those receiving play therapy delivered to our  standards show a positive change, as observed by teachers and parents. Now with over 20,000 measures, the evidence base is highly reliable.

In 2013 our Register of Play and Creative Arts Therapists was accredited by the Professional Standards Authority, the first in the world to be recognised by a government funded agency.

You can experience how play therapy works, the skills required and how we train using mainly experiential exercises, by attending a one-day ‘Introduction to Play Therapy’ course held at 13 convenient venues throughout the UK. Phone: 01825 761143 to book.

What is the one thing that more than any other helps students make the right choice upon leaving school?

It is curious to think that there might be one action a student can take which, on its own, can dramatically raise a student’s chances of getting on the course that is exactly right for that student.

Such an action, if it could be found, could not only enhance the student’s prospect of success both now and in later life, but also reduce the likelihood of the student taking the wrong turn and then dropping out of a course or resigning from a job.

But what could that one action be?

The key to answering this question comes from the observation that the course will always go to the candidate who is most aware of his/her strengths and can express that awareness in a meaningful and potent way.

In short, if the students you work with really don’t know where their own strengths lie, they could take a wrong turning at this moment in their lives, simply because they have not realised who they are and where their real strengths lie.

And this is a major problem for many students today.  For, because of the speed of change and the pressure of social media it is far easier for students to misunderstand their own strengths and weaknesses.

It thus becomes very easy for them to take a decision based on a completely false belief in who and what they are.

GetSet from Belbin is a way of helping students find out about their own strengths and talents.  It helps students learn about their own aptitudes so they can gain access to the right course and right employment both now and in the future.

In this way GetSet builds confidence in the students and helps them decide where they should be taking their lives.

GetSet is a set of questionnaires that school students can complete on-line and which generate a detailed set of reports as to where the student’s strengths lie and what work and study might be appropriate.

To help you see the value that can be gained from completing the survey, we are very happy to offer you the chance to take the GetSet questionnaire yourself at no cost or obligation. Then if you feel it would be helpful to your students you can arrange for the questionnaire to be made available to those students whom you nominate.

To apply for a free questionnaire for yourself or one of your students please click here – click  the contact us at the top of the page and write ‘a free one please’ in the box. To read more about GetSet please do look at our website here www.belbingetset.com.  Or if you have any questions please email getset@belbin.com or phone 01223 264975.

Surprises about children’s psychological problems

ADHD and autistic spectrum are not the main reasons why children are referred to therapeutic support.  Our research shows that children’s problems are many and varied.  58 different issues have been recorded of which 24 account for 56% of the total.  ADHD and Autistic Spectrum which receive considerable publicity are only ranked 7th and 11th.   Attachment issues,  family relationship difficulties, adjustment issues, anger, anxiety and experience of domestic violence, account for 45% of the total.

Assuming that support of the parents as well as the children are key mission objectives nursery schools have an excellent opportunity to fulfil these objectives and increase revenue.

Help the children and their parents by providing a Play Therapy service – one that it is delivered by registered practitioners where quality, safety and effectiveness is warranted.

If your nursery is not yet providing play therapy, there are two main options:

I ) Contact your nearest Play Therapy UK registrant to see if one is available to see your children: www.playtherapyregister.org.uk

2) Invest in training one of your staff as a Registered Practitioner in Therapeutic Play Skills.  You will then have a value added service to increase your revenue.

You can experience how play therapy works, the skills needed and how we train using mainly experiential exercises, by attending a one-day ‘Introduction to Play Therapy’ course held at 13 convenient venues throughout the UK. Phone: 01825 761143 for details

What is the most powerful way of showing students the importance of the novel?

It is self evident that we live in a world in which pupils and students primarily value the new.  Indeed it is an era that is said to have evolved the Cult of the New.

From the latest phone to the latest software upgrade: new is everything.

Which can add a barrier to the students’ appreciation of literature.  Especially if the copy of a book they are studying looks a little… well, not to put too fine a point on it, old.

Yet there is a simple solution to this dilemma.  Brand new editions of classic works of literature which are available at the discounted price of just £1.87 each with free delivery when ordered directly from us.

The range of titles available at this price is extraordinary.  We have over 450 titles in print, covering over 230 works of classic literature.  Each volume contains the full text, and with the classics there is also a set of exclusive introductions and notes.

And there is still more, for not only do we have individual titles at £1.87 but we also have the World Literature and Poetry series at just £3.99 before discount, and our complete works series for just £7.99.

If you would like to see a list of around 50 of the most frequently used set texts which are available direct to schools at the special price of £1.87 that is available here.

To see the full list of our titles in print along with a ready to use order form, should you need it, we have a page with those details as well.

Plus there is currently a 25% discount on all the prices shown.

But even that is not all, for we also have an offer of a free book.  Just in case the notion of books at £1.87 each with free delivery seems just too good to be true, we’d like to assure you of the quality of our publications.

So, if you would like a free sample of one of our classics, just email education@wordsworth-editions.com with your name and the school address, and we’ll put it in the post to you, with our compliments.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Classroom chairs, manufactured in the UK with a FIVE year warranty and costing from less than £ 10 each (ex vat) …..

At a time when there have been increases in the price of classroom chairs it’s nice to be able to report that it’s still possible to purchase classroom chairs from two established UK manufacturers at very competitive prices.

It’s true that there is a limited colour range and in just one seat height (430 mm) but at these prices, AND with a FIVE year warranty, it’s hard to ignore the benefits  of having extra seating or for fitting out temporary classrooms.

It’s all about attachment

Many adult, adolescent and childhood psychological problems may be traced to attachment issues in early childhood.  How many of your pupils exhibit these problems through repeated angry outbursts, crying, clinging or withdrawal?  You will know the disruption they cause.

You can help them and their parents by providing a play therapy service – provided that it is delivered safely and effectively by practitioners on a register accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.

Play Therapy UK’s evidence base, built over the last 12 years using actual practice data from over a thousand schools, shows that between 77% and 84% of those receiving play therapy delivered to our  standards show a positive change, as observed by teachers and parents. Now with over 20,000 measures, the evidence base is highly reliable.

If your school is not yet using play therapy, there are two main options:

I ) Contact your nearest PTUK registrant to see if one is available provide a service for your school: www.playtherapyregister.org.uk

2) Invest in training one of your teaching staff as a Registered Practitioner in Therapeutic Play Skills.

Our partner the Academy of Play and Child Psychotherapy (APAC) is currently training over 300 practitioners in 13 conveniently venues throughout the UK.  Many are Teachers, Teaching Assistants, Learning Mentors and Nurses.  They’ll receive a Post Graduate Certificate from Leeds Beckett University as well as being registered. It’s a good investment that will typically show a good return within a couple of terms.

Perhaps you would like to experience how play therapy works, the skills required and how we train using mainly experiential exercises, by attending a one-day ‘Introduction to Play Therapy’ course held at 13 convenient venues throughout the UK. Phone: 01825 761143 to book.

What is the most effective way of helping your students who don’t get the exam grades they expected?

There are, of course, many possible solutions for underperforming students, but what has made some solutions more interesting is the rapid growth in the number of choices that the private school / college sector have recently introduced, including those with substantial discounts. For example:

We are placing an increasing number of students into schools which offer vocational  BTECS if it is considered their GCSE grades are too low to justify progression to A Levels. Alternatively there are similar opportunities Foundation Programmes. Although most are aimed at International students we can also get UK nationals onto some of these programmes

We can arrange specialist private tuition at home to facilitate retakes for those needing to improve GCSE grades, while still continuing with A Levels at school.

For students with medical degree ambitions but whose GCSE grades were B or less, there are specialist medic, dental and veterinary courses for sixth formers  (ask for our free eguide)

We can advise on alternative university courses for those whose grades necessitate a direction change.

For more information on how we can help specific individual students, go to http://www.educationadvisers.co.uk/services-for-schools-school-referrals or better still phone Mary, Duncan or Ryan on 01622 813870 or 01603 812852

Whatever the situation, remember there is always a solution and always an alternative. We are happy to help you explore the best available options. Education Advisers Ltd are independent and impartial school choice consultants and our 12 websites advise more than 1 million parents/students per annum

P.S We are offering to schools free of charge our online library of university advice sources, which you can then make available to your students, their parents and of course your own staff – just ask.

Dual power calculators provide reassurance for students in their maths and science lessons and exams ………

Today’s “battery only” calculators are usually very reliable, especially if you use a recognised brand such as Casio, Logik, Sharp, HP, Aurora etc.

Nevertheless, at certain times some schools and colleges prefer the extra reassurance of “dual power” calcs which use both a battery and a solar cell back up.

Two highly recommended dual power calculators are the Logik LK 83XP (from £ 5.29) and the Casio FX 85GT+ (from £ 7.55)  ex vat.  Both calculators are suitable for KS 3, 4,  GCSE and Scottish exams and each has a THREE year guarantee.

Further details about these two calculators can be found on the website of Signpost Educational Ltd.,  www.signposteducational.co.uk  or contact them by phone on:

Does your Multi Academy Trust need its own ‘bespoke’ Primary School assessment system?

Do you need a system flexible enough to allow schools to manage their own assessment policy, while consolidating their results so that MAT management can compare schools’ progress and attainment?

With support from our Primary Progress toolkit it’s easy to create such a ‘bespoke’ system.

Schools can:

pick their own manageable set of subjects, statements/objectives (the toolkit can import these or provide a default set to edit).

agree a set of assessment grades, which define pupils’ steps towards mastering the curriculum (the toolkit can cope with any set of assessment grades).

use a quick and easy way for teachers to record their assessments (the toolkit provides this).

set Age Related Expectations for each term (the toolkit has a simple way to set these).

analyse which pupils are making expected progress and which need support to get them on track (the toolkit provides multiple reports)

The MAT gets:

a dashboard giving access to all the individual school toolkits, together with overview reports which summarise results at MAT level and compare schools performance.

So, if you aren´t 100% satisfied with your current assessment tracking system, why not check out our Online Primary Progress toolkit at primaryprogresstoolkit.co.uk?

If you need more information, or would like to discuss your specific needs, email me at statsed@gmail.com.

We can give you free access to a demo site, where you can try out the toolkit for yourself.

Do you need classroom tables and chairs at short notice ….?

It can be rather worrying to find out  with just  two or three weeks before the start of another school year that some classrooms may not have enough tables and chairs.

The explanation may be simple, the person who normally deals with ordering has been unwell or has changed jobs…or perhaps there will be a larger than normal intake.

But whatever the reason you now an urgent need for tables and chairs to fill the empty classrooms as quickly as possible.  If you can be somewhat flexible with specifications  eg. colour, design, size etc then you may stand a better chance of equipping your classrooms sooner rather than later.

If this is, or might be, the situation in your organisation, then a quick phone  call to Central Educational Supplies Ltd on 020 7515 1797 may be a shrewd move (If you prefer email it’s info@centraleducational.co.uk).  Please ask for Martin Evans who will be pleased to assist.

Activity books and posters to help you deliver fundamental British Values in the Early Years

Following the success of our range of books and classroom resources to support PSHE and Citizenship within KS2 and KS3, we will shortly be launching a range of materials for KS1 and EYFS.

Our British Values EYFS and KS1 Activity Book and posters will give children a series of stimulating images and activities to help embed ideas about –

Democracy – pictures to help children learn about making choices and letting others have their say.

Rule of Law – images to help understand more about rules, and how to tell right from wrong.

Individual Liberty – pictures that show we should all be free to have different ideas and beliefs.

Mutual respect and tolerance for those with different faiths – a range of images to help children understand that we are more the same than different, and that we should treat others as we would like to be treated ourselves.

To find out more about this brand-new range that will help you deliver fundamental British Values to your early years’ children click HERE and we will contact you when the products become available.

What is the simplest way to meet the new requirement of 2.5 hours of activity a week in addition to PE lessons?

There are government policies and government policies.  Some are welcome, some… well perhaps not so welcome.

But the objective of making children more active is one of those which it is hard to argue with – given the benefits that it offers both the school and the children.

For, it turns out, all the evidence shows that the extra activity the government wants us to ensure children get does more than simply making the children physically fitter.   Indeed it seems that increased activity also dramatically improves children’s intellectual abilities, while reducing disciplinary issues, improving sociability, and reducing mental health problems.

Which then leaves two questions:

Give your students the advantage of live performance

Along with us here at FRED Theatre HQ, I hope you’re enjoying the summer break.

I realise not all work stops though, and thought now would be a good time to remind you we are currently accepting enquiries for our in-schools productions for 2017-18.

JUST ADDED: MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING

In response to a number of requests, we’ve added Shakespeare’s much loved comedy to our programme of in-school shows for the new academic year.

In common with our other productions, Much Ado will run at approximately 90 minutes, using an edited version of Shakespeare’s play. A bright, bold and colourful production, this will be just right for the summer term. You might even want to think about an outdoor performance (space and weather permitting).

A CHRISTMAS CAROL

First up though, in the autumn term, we are touring a fresh adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic Christmas ghost story.

A professional cast of six actors will faithfully present this much loved story in an innovative and low-tech setting. All you need supply is a space and an audience.

It’s an excellent introduction to the novella for students, or a timely refresher, that ensures all the key themes (including responsibility, poverty, education, change) are included giving classes plenty to discuss post-performance.

A Christmas Carol can be performed in-school at a time to suit your schedule, and is available for bookings throughout October, November and December 2017. The show runs at 90 minutes and is suitable for all ages, especially those studying the text.

SPRING 2018: MACBETH and ROMEO AND JULIET

After Christmas we are back in schools with 90 minute versions of two of Shakespeare’s classic tragedies.

Macbeth toured in early 2017 and was very well received. We’re delighted to bring back that production for a second tour along with a new production of Romeo and Juliet.

Are you focussing on what matters with regards to raising boys’ achievement?

According to the DfE, “Girls are outperforming boys in all the main attainment indicators at ks4” which is what makes it so important to implement a whole-school strategy that will not only engage boys in education but that will also maintain their interest.

Which is precisely why Mengage has devised a workshop entitled
The Boy Problem: Raising boys’ achievement – what can schools do?

The Boy Problem: Raising boys’ achievement – what can schools do? is an evidence-based, experiential workshop in which your staff will be taught about the most effective ways to close the widening gap between girls’ and boys’ attainment in education.

This workshop offers practical solutions and covers five main areas of concern, including: male learning styles, boys’ participation in education, addressing literacy concerns, a male-inclusive classroom, and the importance of creating a whole-school strategy.

The Boy Problem: Raising boys’ achievement – what can schools do? is delivered in three hours and costs £950 or a one-off date on Thursday 19th October at our education centre CLICK HERE.

The simple and effective way of cutting hundreds (maybe even thousands) of pounds from your organisation’s costs when choosing new classroom chairs……..

Postura Plus classroom chairs with a TWENTY year warranty can save schools and colleges hundreds or even thousands of pounds  and eliminate time wasted trying to repair damaged or vandalised chairs….…

Improvements in design and manufacture mean that the quality and durability of classroom chairs have improved significantly  since 1996. The result is that it’s now possible to obtain classroom chairs with a TWENTY year warranty.

That’s twenty years with NO replacement costs and NO repair costs …. a considerable saving of time and money compared with many chairs still in use in UK schools.

….and the chair in question  ?  It’s the POSTURA  PLUS, now in its  twenty first year.

Designed not only to be durable and virtually vandal proof it also encourages good posture and is available in 16 colours and six sizes from nursery right through to college and university.

If you’re looking for an attractive,  practical and durable chair  with an ergonomic design which  encourages good posture  and which can be used throughout your organisation then the Postura Plus chair is worth serious consideration.

For further information on Postura Plus chairs (which by the way, are manufactured here in the UK) please visit the website:  www.centraleducational.co.uk

It’s all about attachment

Many adult, adolescent and childhood psychological problems may be traced to attachment issues in early childhood.

How many of the children attending your nursery exhibit these problems through repeated outbursts, crying, clinging or withdrawal?

You can help them and their parents through Play Therapy – provided that it is delivered by registered practitioners.

An evidence base, built over the last 12 years using actual practice data from over a thousand schools, shows that between 77% and 84% of those receiving play therapy delivered to Play Therapy UK standards show a positive change, as observed by teachers and parents. Now with over 20,000 measures, the evidence base is highly reliable.

If your nursery is not yet using play therapy, there are two main options:

I ) Contact your nearest PTUK registrant to see if one is available to see your children: www.playtherapyregister.org.uk

3) Invest in training one of your staff as a Registered Practitioner in Therapeutic Play Skills.  You will then have a value added service to increase your revenue.

Maybe the first step is to experience how play therapy works and how we train, by attending a one-day ‘Introduction to Play Therapy’ course held at 13 convenient venues throughout the UK. Phone: 01825 761143 to book.
