The simple solution to ensuring a hassle free start to lessons and exams……..

Every now and again I get to chat with current or former teachers and one of the topics that often crops up is why many students don’t seem to be able (or willing) to bring a pen, pencil, ruler etc to their lessons.

Apparently this causes a fair bit of disruption while some students try to beg, steal or borrow the basic kit they need to benefit from their lesson.

In an attempt to solve this problem there’s a product called the Student Essentials set,” which, as the name suggests, contains all the basics that students need for most  lessons.

Consisting of  three quality black ink ballpens, two full length HB pencils, eraser, 15 cm ruler and a metal sharpener, all packed in a A5 size, clear PVC “exam friendly” wallet with a zip slider.

From just 75p each (ex vat) the “Student Essentials set”  is a convenient and cost effective solution to the problem of students who don’t have the correct kit for lessons. It’s particularly useful at exam time……

ABC Fundraising is a charitable fundraising company specialising in helping charities and schools secure grants towards their work.

Over the past few years we have helped dozens of schools and educational charities raise well over £500,000 towards their projects, via successful grant applications to various local authorities, lotteries, trusts and foundations.

We are currently offering our assistance to schools around the country – projects we can help you achieve funding towards include:

– School playground development, or new play equipment

– Outdoor classrooms, shelters, or furniture
– Gardens, planting, or forest areas
– Before or after school clubs
– Holiday clubs, extra-curricular, and community activities
– Any other projects potentially beneficial to the development of your pupils or community

Working with us will cost the school no money up front – we will only charge a fee if your bid is successful, and you receive a grant towards the project. Everything we do is completely transparent, and you have complete control over your project direction and content of applications. However, we can of course provide experienced advice upon how to give your grant application the best chance of success.

Please get in touch if you are interested in our services – we will be happy to discuss your project and how we can help.

How can the hall in which students take examinations affect the results they achieve?

Almost every institution that runs examinations acknowledges that some students can underachieve because of a feeling of nerves as they enter and sit down in the exam room.

However, it is only recently that schools and universities have started to consider the impact on students that the room in which the examinations take place can have.

But when it comes down to it, the room certainly can have an impact. For example, if you are using a room that has no sound-absorbing material, then every chair movement, every pen drop, is going to be heard by many of the students.

For those students who are readily able to focus on their exam this will hardly matter, but for those who are suffering from exam nerves, such extraneous sounds can totally disrupt their already shaky thought patterns.

Which is why schools are now investigating the Smartsquare carpet system. It is made up of 2m x 1m tiles designed temporarily to transform a large hall into a carpeted venue so it can be used for examinations and indeed other events.

Smartsquare carpet systems come with a purpose-built Smartcart trolley designed to hold approximately 200m² flooring. The trolley is built with non-marking wheels, and the average school hall will only require between 4m² and 7m² of floor space for storage.

It is these trolleys that are the key to the efficiency of the system as they can be moved around as the tiles are being laid, enabling quick and efficient installation.

When not in use Smartsquare carpets pack neatly away into the Smartcart.

And best of all, the carpet tiles are very easy to maintain. To clean a badly soiled tile you simply take it outside, hose it down, and leave to dry.

Smartsquare can be purchased outright or bought on a lease over a period of time.  It is also available on a two-week free trial – along with a Smartcart – so you can see for yourself.

Furthermore it is not only possible to transform a sports hall or other large area into an exam hall, but such rooms can also be transformed into areas suitable for end of year awards ceremonies, conferences, etc.

You can read more about Smartsquare on our website.    Or if you would like to talk about these possibilities please do call us on 01302 836 777 or email

Training lifesavers and inspiring future doctors

A major part of medicine involves learning and applying knowledge, in order to save lives. An increasing amount of medical school applicants are choosing to learn first aid, which comes as no surprise, given their desire to save lives. Completing a first aid course can also help demonstrate enthusiasm and dedication for a career in medicine.

The MEDICS (Medical Emergencies, Defibrillation and Introduction to Clinical Skills) Simulation course has been specifically designed as a first aid course, for those hoping to study medicine or considering medicine as a potential career, by Saltworth Health.

Saltworth Health is a niche purpose-driven training organization – founded by doctors – which delivers a range of unique first aid courses. Saltworth Health brings a breath of fresh air to first aid training, revolutionising the way courses are delivered. We have thought up innovative and different ways to incorporate the hobbies and interests of students into our courses – as a result, our courses are more tailored towards students and therefore more engaging, making the information learnt memorable and easier to recall in a real emergency.

The MEDICS Simulation course is a one-day course delivered on a simulated ward (SaIL Centre) at Guy’s Hospital, London on Saturday 4th of June, 2016 and due to the size of the simulated ward, numbers are restricted to a maximum of 20 students.

The morning session covers first aid training and basic life support for medical emergencies such as asthma attack, choking, anaphylaxis and cardiac arrest, including defibrillation.

The afternoon session introduces students to relevant clinical skills used in resuscitation by paramedics, nurses or doctors such as cannulation (accessing blood vessels), venipuncture (taking bloods), injections, using an inhaler or epipen etc.

The MEDICS Sim course is stimulating, engaging and practical for all future medics. It is taught by doctors and delivered with a young audience in mind, ideal for students applying to medical schools by October 2016 (current Year 12 students). Further information can be found on our downloadable flyer (please feel free to circulate).

Fundamentally, students will learn important lifesaving skills but also get firsthand experience of being a ‘hospital medic’, as they are tested with real-time, high-pressure simulated scenarios, in a safe and supportive environment, offering a fantastic insight into medicine as a career.

Participants will be awarded an Emergency Life Support (ELS) certificate based on the Resuscitation Council UK guidelines.

Our courses are not simply a tick box exercise to support a student’s university application; they are designed to teach students how to respond correctly in emergencies.

If you would like a copy of our courses e-brochure or would like to be informed of future courses, visit the contact us page on our website and select the ‘Early bird notification’ option.

You can also write to us at Saltworth Health, 71 – 75 Shelton Street, Covent Garden, London, WC2H 9JQ or give us a call on 02080048060.

A school noticeboard is usually bought for one reason. But that is not all a noticeboard is good for.

A school noticeboard is usually bought to communicate messages to parents where previous methods of communication have been problematic, or failed. But that is not all a noticeboard is good for. Indeed, the noticeboard might just be the hub of your school.

It provides parents with a topic of conversation and school staff with what can loosely be described as a teamwork activity – something which became apparent to Greenbarnes following the analyses of the results of a questionnaire distributed to schools.

To summarise, a school notice board is not just the responsibility of one, but the responsibility of many, and it not only creates a sense of cohesion among staff, but also among parents at the school gates.

We have a range of styles of outdoor noticeboards which you can see on our website. Alternatively, please do call us on 01280 701093 and we’ll be pleased to discuss our boards, send you a brochure, and give any advice and guidance that you may require.
