What sort of world is it when one can’t trust academic scientists to do what they say they are going to do?

According to one of my customers at Admiral Storage, there is a money-making scheme run by some particularly disreputable people that is currently doing the rounds.

He’s not part of it, of course, but over a coffee he told me a most disturbing story that calls the moral fibre of one or two people in the academic community into question.

The tale involves offering a conference for which delegates have to register in advance.  Anyone who then actually does turn up to the conference finds that, not only is it not taking place, but that the address for the conference that is given is in fact not a conference venue at all.  Generally speaking it is a pub. And not even an upper class pub at that.

These conferences can be on anything – “Climate Change” conferences (normally with the name “International” in the title) are particularly popular in this regard.  But choose an academic subject and you’ll find a conference on it going on somewhere this week.

The unsuspecting recipient of the promotional emails is invariably invited to submit a paper to be delivered at the conference, and when this is paper is accepted (as it always is) there is the request for an “administrative fee” to be paid by the speaker.

On the other hand delegates from developing countries can attend for free – a nice touch since it suggests there will be a big audience.

Of course, the address of the conference office is a fake, as is the address of the conference itself (pubs in north London seem to be nominated quite often – although I am not quite sure why.  Maybe addresses in south London don’t have the right ring).

So, I wondered, why would serious scientists be taken in by such a scam?  Wouldn’t they go a-checking before they submit their payment for delivering a speech or simply attending to listen to speeches?

Indeed I wondered that even more when I started to look at some of the email adverts for these scamferences as they have become known, because even without having any knowledge of or interest in some of the subjects that they deal with I could tell that the events were likely to be fraudulent.

The use of repeated exclamation marks (as in “delegates from developing countries can attend for free!!!!”) is normally quite a giveaway. As are the misspellings, the misuse of scientific jargon, and the complete misunderstanding of scientific measurement.

For example, in one advert I saw, a description of the space available in the “Main Conference Hall West” was accompanied by a statement that this is 3002 m x 3002 m – which would actually give us a room with four dimensions.  This, of course, could be fun and would presumably involve time travel, but doesn’t actually give one a sense that the organisers actually know about any science whatsoever.

However, as I discussed these matters with my colleagues at Admiral while contemplating the writing of this little note, I had it pointed out to me that the august “Central Hall Westminster” which is advertised as “Central London’s Largest Conference Venue” and most assuredly does exist, and does host some important conferences, has (according to its website) a “space” of “292sq”.  Square what, we are not told. Just square.

But, as I say, Central Hall Westminster is real and not involved in anything untoward. However the scamferences are completely unreal. So how is it that people sign up to go to them even when to me, as a total non-scientist, and indeed non-academic, I can see that this is not real?

I spoke to a few friends who are more in touch with the academic world than I am, and was told something rather alarming.

Obviously what I am going to reveal here relates to just a tiny, tiny, tiny number of people in the academic world, and not the overwhelming majority who are dedicated, hard-working people, who would never do anything amiss.

But it seems that there are a couple of reasons why a handful of scurrilous people could get involved.

The first is that participation in an international conference can look really good on a CV, and once the conference is over there may well be very few ways in which one can check that the conference actually took place.

However in this regard the scammers are themselves being scammed it seems, because in reality there is no need for the would-be academic even to register for the conference.  Just saying that he/she had been there could be enough.

The second is that some scurrilous academics are so certain that the administration of their august institutions is not all that it ought to be.  They are in fact simply looking for their institution to pay airfares and hotel bills and are certain that no one in admin is going to check that the event they are attending is actually taking place.

Indeed some (so I am told) even offer to pay for the admission to the conference themselves if the university will pay for the travel and residency costs.  “We’ll have to see receipts” says the administrator, attempting to appear efficient. And for this there is no problem.

It is indeed becoming a most murky world.

Developing your students’ mental resilience

The pressure for students to perform well during the exam years can become stressful for both students and staff. Managing this stress and supporting students to stay motivated throughout the year ahead and focus on their goals is essential.

Some students will need more support than others but everybody can benefit from exercises that challenge them to think differently about their situation, strive for more in life and align their goals with their values.

The earlier students are encouraged to develop their mindset and focus on resilience for the challenges they face ahead, the better. Raising motivation and ultimately grades does not happen overnight, you need a structured programme that can be used from the outset all the way to the start of the exams.

Our solution comes in the form of eight worksheets in a ready-made booklet – ‘Greatest Strength Workbook for Students’. It comes with a free teacher’s guide and is available as an instant download. A sample can be downloaded for free to give you an idea of what you get. The licenses to print the workbook then start from only £49.99.

Helping students learn to overcome stress, teaching them to motivate themselves, encouraging them to plan for the future and develop confidence to try new things are essential skills

To develop these skills, students must explore them. Finding time in the school day to focus on these areas can be challenging but could you find ten minutes to introduce an activity that was already prepared and ready to use?

The full details are available at: http://newset-training.com/students.html

Thanks and I wish you and your students the best during the year.

What is the most effective way of getting students to retain the information you’ve imparted during a lesson?

We all know that the students who are able to focus for the longest periods of time on what we’re saying without their attention wandering are the ones most likely to retain the information.

Conversely the students with short attention spans are also the ones most likely to be disruptive in class. No news there.

We would all dearly love to be teaching classes full of students who behaved well and hung onto our every word. Realistically, a totally perfect teaching/learning scenario is unlikely, but can we improve the situation?

We believe we can! We’ve developed extremely quiet background music designed specifically to enhance information retention and improve concentration. Also, as a bonus, disruptive behaviour is reduced.

Safety over cost, a practical example of the problems faced by mathematicians, engineers and businesses.

So that students can see how important maths is to our businesses and to our building industry we have put together a practical problem solving exercise called The Oil Rig Platform.  It is designed to simulate the workings of a team of engineers, trying to find a solution to a problem by building an oil rig platform.

The students are divided into small teams and challenged to build a model of an oil rig platform and work out how much it costs to build using only set materials.  To test for safety the platform must be able to support the weight of a brick!  Will your students design it so cheaply that it collapses or will they spend more money to make it strong and sturdy?

The exercise is suitable for both KS3 and KS4 students and runs over one lesson.  Each team is given the student brief, a set of resources and a deadline.  The winning team is the one who can build the oil rig, support the weight of a brick and is the cheapest to build.  A great learning experience and good fun for everyone.

What’s more – we have made it really easy for the teacher to deliver too!

This resource contains: clear teachers’ guidance notes that explain how to run the exercise, the students exercise brief, resources checklist and the assessment criteria.

How much does this all cost?  Only £20.00 and can be re-used over and over again!

There are more details at…

http://c-l-e.co.uk/buy-teaching-resources-online/oil-rig-platform/

You can pay and download the exercise direct from our website using PayPal or you may wish to pay with either a cheque or a purchase order number. Simply e-mail your purchase order number to us and we will send the exercise to you along with the invoice for payment within 14 days.

20th Century European History

This pack is specifically aimed at EAL/SEN students who are studying history at Key Stage 3 as it allows the teacher to provide differentiated work in a self-contained worksheet containing clear and concise step by step instructions.

The worksheets are both accessible and challenging, but also designed to provide a secure basis of knowledge of the subject matter with definitions of subject specific key words.

The time period begins in 1914 with the origins of World War One, and goes on to cover all aspects of WWI and its aftermath.

It continues with the inter-war years including the Russian Revolution and the rise of the dictators and concludes with all aspects of WWII including technology, the home front and the holocaust.

The drawings, photos, diagrams and cartoons illustrate a variety of key points in a visually exciting and imaginative way providing a wealth of information on the period for students with a limited knowledge of the English language.

The activities range from tried and tested techniques which include closed exercises, heads & tails matching, sentence starters, newspaper templates, flow diagrams, drawing and labelling. There are also novel ways for lower ability students to search and synthesise information such as highlighted reading for meaning exercises.

Decades of mixed ability teaching in inner city schools and a keen understanding of pedagogy have shaped the design of this flexible resource which is devised to make the day to day teaching easier by being simple to photocopy, modify and deploy.

51 Photocopiable Masters on CD – Price: £34.99 (£41.99 incl VAT)

How can you ensure that your students are performing at their best on the day of the exam?

One of the biggest arguments against timed linear exams is the requirement for students to demonstrate what they have learnt during two years of study in just a few hours – which is somewhat unjust when we consider that adolescents are prone to having a bad day.

It is for this reason that we have devised Exam Buster – a workshop that is delivered on the morning of the exam(s) which will get your year 10 and 11 students geared up and ready to take on any challenge that they may face in the exam hall.

The workshop is short, sharp and to the point, offering your students advice on how to manage stress in the exam hall and demonstrating good exam practice, such as the importance of reading questions carefully.

One session lasts for 45 minutes and can be delivered to as many as 100 students at a time.

What is the best way to ensure that art and design students present a good case study?

For anyone who has never previously presented a case study or undertaken their own research, the whole notion of what they are being asked to undertake can be completely overwhelming and daunting.

Indeed, if there is one question on their lips at that moment when the issue is first raised, it is most likely to be “What am I supposed to do?”

The problem is, of course, that they find themselves not just coming to terms with the issue of what GCSE art is all about, but simultaneously with the question of what research is and how it can be presented.

A lack of understanding can lead to a lack of confidence in what one is doing, and as a result some students can dither, unable to start for fear of doing the wrong thing or present work that is inappropriate or way below the standard that you know they could achieve.

To help overcome this problem Pam Bradshaw has produced Presenting Research in Art and Design.

It starts by examining what a case study is and how to research, structure and present a comprehensive and successful piece of work.

It goes on to work through four separate examples with workpacks on a painter (Van Gogh), a designer (Vivienne Westwood), an art discipline (African masks) and an art movement (Pop Art).

Each workpack contains sections on contextual studies, objective description and subjective response, with worksheets on the compilation and ordering of information and its presentation.

There is also a section on both solo and group oral presentations – an area which is often a source of extreme anxiety for students. This section includes tips and exercises on research, structuring and the presentation skills required.

How can you organise transition days for Y6 pupils and prepare your Y9 pupils with study skills for KS4 at one of the busiest times of year?

At this time of year it is natural to dedicate any spare time to preparing your GCSE students for their upcoming exams. Yet on your list of ‘things to do’ it is likely that you will also have the task of organising Y6 transition days and preparing Y9 pupils with study skills for KS4.

To help you in completing these tasks at one of the busiest times of year, we can visit your school and deliver transition and/or study skills days on your behalf with our popular Double Session STEM Workshops – on which we are offering a 30% discount in April and May.

Our Double Session STEM Workshops last for two hours and will be delivered twice in a day to 30 pupils at a time. You can choose from a range of STEM workshops, including:

Space Pioneers – Cadets must work as a team to cope with high pressure situations – fixing failing electrics to ensure safe touchdown before analysing the alien surface upon which they have landed.

CSI – Blood Pool – With a dead woman found in a pool of blood, forensic scientists must analyse blood types and DNA fingerprints to identify the killer. But one mistake could contaminate the evidence and lead to a miscarriage of justice.

Body in the Box – Partial human remains have been found in a box within a derelict house. Teams must analyse the bones to determine any similarity to profiles of missing persons and conduct DNA tests with suspected relatives in an attempt to identify the body.

Towering Ambition – Rival mechanical engineering firms compete to design and build the most prestigious structures in the world. Limited special materials and tight deadlines mean only the most creative teams with good project management and economic sense will claim glory.

You can find more information about the Double Session Workshops that we host in schools by clicking here. Alternatively, you can call us on 01603 520866 or email us at events@thinkersineducation.co.uk.

What’s the most effective method to help young children overcome speech problems?

We’d all agree that repetition of key phrases and sounds is crucial and of course if we can encourage parents and carers to continue this practice at home, the results can often be spectacular.

The problem is twofold; first we have to inspire the parents/carers and then we have to make it simple for them. Bearing in mind that most parents/carers have a full day and many of them feel they don’t have extra time to spend doing speech exercises.

But what if we could make it fun and easy? What if it could be done first thing in the morning, at breaktimes, at lunchtime and just before going home.

We believe we have the answer! A collection of songs specifically aimed at young children with speech and language problems. A collection of songs composed by a well known children’s songwriter in association with a team of Speech & Language Therapists. A collecton of songs that won an award as an innovative project.

If you’d like to know more go to: http://calmerchildren.com/Speech_Development_Songs.html

Where you’ll be able to hear samples and purchase & download this wonderfully effective collection of songs. They can be used on media players and smart phones or you can burn your own CD with the songs in any order you choose.

The collection of songs costs £6.99 and school workshops/teacher training sessions are available for £195 plus travelling expenses. You’re also very welcome to invite Parents/Carers along to the workshops. The more the merrier!

If you have any questions or queries about these Speech Development Songs or Workshops please do call me on 07801 067386. Or  email: vo.fletcher@btinternet.com

It’s strange to think of the winter in spring, but action now can cut costs throughout the winter.

All organisations have a duty of care to keep their entrances and exits safe – which for schools means having them well lit for pupils, students, and staff, and for adult education classes coming and going in the evening.

And the thought of additional lighting to meet modern safety requirements might sound like an expensive operation – except for one thing.   For it is now possible to install external lighting that has zero energy costs.

Now to be clear, that is not “next to nothing” (meaning it costs you something but it may not be as much as you are paying now) but is in fact zero.  Not a penny.

This can be achieved by installing solar bollards that are charged by solar energy and which retain their energy especially well by giving off a low level light until someone approaches.  At this point the level of light is increased before dying away once the individual has moved on.

Better still, installation is very easy – there are no trenches to be dug, no cabling needed, and thus no resurfacing after installation.

There are pictures and summary details on our website and there is a complete set of information about installation and technical specifications here.

If you have any questions about the use of zero energy cost solar bollards for walkways, please do call us on 01280 701 093 or email sales@greenbarnes.co.uk

The seven benefits of learning-outside-the-classroom

Learning-outside-the-classroom raises your school’s profile

Schools that regularly undertake learning-outside-the-classroom in their local area are able to form stronger links with groups and individuals in their community. And schools that regularly undertake learning-outside-the-classroom further afield are visible within the community through the school’s branding (uniforms, logos on the school minibus, etc.)

Your school thus has the opportunity to showcase its efforts and achievements and to communicate the school values which could lead to positive media coverage, impressing Ofsted and encouraging prospective parents to send their child to your school.

Reward, motivation and to boost morale

Not every school trip has to be based around learning. Sometimes, if there is time left at the end of term and the budget permits (or parents are willing to pay for it), the school might decide to plan a school trip as a reward for the work pupils have done, or to boost morale and further motivate them to future learning.

To ignite or re-ignite a passion for a subject

Benefit two links in nicely with benefit three. Learning-outside-the-classroom can be beneficial for pupils who are new to the school as it can ignite a passion for a subject which they may not have been introduced to before.

It can also be beneficial to existing pupils to re-ignite a passion for a subject, particularly after a period of exams, for example.

Improves pupils’ understanding of the world and where they (could) fit in

Learning-outside-the-classroom can also be highly beneficial to students when it comes to deciding which career they would like to pursue. School trips enable students to experience activities and events that they don’t have the opportunity to experience in the classroom, thus giving them a better understanding of where, in society, they (could) fit in.

Trust, independence and responsibility

With learning-outside-the-classroom comes an element of trust in terms of pupils’ behaviour as many school rules aren’t applicable when pupils are outside the school’s grounds. This thus devolves increased responsibility on to your pupils and encourages increased independence, which is of course a vital life skill.

Learning-outside-the-classroom can encourage diversity

Given that the demographics of pupils in a school are representative of the demographics of the people in the local area, schools located in an area where ethnic and cultural diversity is lacking naturally find it more difficult to fulfil Ofsted’s diversity requirements.

Therefore, by undertaking regular learning-outside-the-classroom activities (depending on where your pupils go, what your pupils do, and whom your pupils encounter) the school can offer good evidence to Ofsted that your school is encouraging diversity.

To cement the learning that they have done in the classroom

This is perhaps the most beneficial outcome of learning-outside-the-classroom. And there is not just one reason, but three that we can think of, for learning-outside-the-classroom being remembered more readily by pupils than learning-inside-the-classroom.

Firstly, learning-outside-the-classroom provides real-life applications of concepts learnt in the classroom which not only provides a greater understanding of these concepts, but also highlights to pupils why what they are learning matters.

Secondly, learning-outside-the-classroom often takes on a different type of learning style, steering more towards kinaesthetic learning than visual and auditory learning – styles which are used most commonly in the classroom. This therefore gives pupils, who learn best through movements and experience, the opportunity to learn in their preferred style.

Thirdly, some learning-outside-the-classroom can provoke an emotional response from your pupils which cannot be provoked in the classroom. Connecting their learning with emotion will ensure that the information they have learnt will be remembered more readily. This type of learning-outside-the-classroom might be a visit to a WW1 memorial or to a theatre production, for example.

Of course, as school minibus leasing is our area of specialty, if your school requires a (new) school minibus in order to undertake learning-outside-the-classroom, you can go to our website, call us on 01753 859944 or email minibus@benchmarkleasing.co.uk for more information.

And to get notifications of school trip activity and location ideas and how learning-outside-the-classroom can be used to benefit your students learning and development, follow us on Twitter @MinibusLeasing or like our Facebook page – Benchmark Minibus.

What is the most effective way of teaching pupils to use a range of sentence structures in their writing, whatever their ability?

Sentences are pesky things. They can be short or long, dramatic statements or longer affairs that make several points at once.  They can even be contradictory and tell lies (as with our subject line!).

They can announce or question, they can shout or whisper.  In fact, they can do almost anything. All of which raises the question: how best to teach children about them?

We’ve found a way to do this most satisfactorily with “Daily Sentence Structures.”  The programme is broken down into a series of 15-minute sessions. By completing the daily sessions, pupils gain a system for creating imaginative and interesting writing in as little as six weeks.

Of course, at the same time the programme covers the writing requirements of the 2014 National Curriculum including using grammatical structures, making meanings clear, and creating effect and using a range of sentence starters to create specific effects.

The programme also includes using commas and later semi-colons and dashes, sustaining ideas, and varying structures.

Pupilsconfidence and self-esteem will increase, leading to better results across all subjects. The programme has also been found to appeal to any pupils who enjoy applying logic to their writing and being able to create instant paragraphs.

As a result it gives a sense of achievement to all pupils, including those who are the most resistant to writing.

You can order the Daily Sentence Structures resource by Brilliant Publications in a variety of ways, including:

  • By visiting the website
  • By phone on 01449 766629

The Secret to Successful Revision A practical guide for GCSE Geography teachers

How is it possible for a dedicated student to fail to get the grades s/he wants despite long hours of revision?

All too often, the answer is simple.  The type of revision that has been done at home by this promising student has been ineffective, focusing on knowledge acquisition rather than understanding.

It is this observation that leads to the thought that the knowledge one needs to give to students is that knowledge is not quite as important as they think.

The typical weighting for knowledge in a GCSE Geography exam is only between 30 and 40% of the marks.  But, despite this fact, left to their own devices some of my students would happily devote near to 100% of their geography revision time to the retention of knowledge.

Some, in pursuit of the magical A* grade, will recreate their notes into beautifully colour co-ordinated works of Post-It note art or elaborate mind maps. But still, despite all the work, these students will ignore the other 60-70% of the marks that are not knowledge based.

So, it may be argued that in the classroom the teacher no longer has to emphasise knowledge.  As creatures of habit, students will still spend plenty of time on knowledge acquisition, leaving the teacher free to fill their revision sessions with activities that enable them to practise applying that knowledge and honing their skills.

“The Secret to Successful Revision” makes clear that students retain more by actively re-working their knowledge in different ways than by reading revision guides or following revision lessons.  It deals with methods of revising geography which take into account the way exams are marked.  It covers “command words” and “maximising marks on terms and definitions”, simplifying case studies, using data from graphs and maps, and much more.

The Secret to Successful Revision is published as a download so that you can receive immediately a copy onto your computer which you can print out for colleagues as often as you want.

There are sample pages from the book at http://www.pdf.firstandbest.co.uk/authordownloadsamples/T1808samples.pdf and you can order it at  http://shop.firstandbest.co.uk/product_info.php?cPath=76_112&products_id=776

The price is £10 plus VAT (the VAT can be reclaimed in most cases by the school).

What makes a play suitable for use in GCSE Drama?

The English language is full of plays – which is not surprising really since people have been writing them for around 1000 years.

The trouble is that many have cast requirements or subject matter that mean they are not at all suitable for the classroom or theatre with the right amount of engagement per candidate and the right number of students involved within the cast.

What’s more, given the need to find scenes and settings which are not just extracts from published plays and the need for the play to have a unified sense, finding suitable plays gets even more difficult – especially if one wishes to avoid using the same plays as last year.

This is the problem that “Here comes Godot now!” by Lindsay Jones solves. It contains 12 plays that engage with themes not often found in other sources, such as dark comedy, fantasy, horror, humour and urban myths.

Thus the themes in this volume avoid the social topics such as drug taking which other volumes (and indeed assemblies and PSHE lessons) will already have covered extensively.

As for performances, the plays are written for a variety of combinations of participants from two boys or two girls up to four boys and four girls.

Because the volume is photocopiable (or printable from a CD rom) only one copy of the book need be bought, and it can be used among the class without further cost.

What if there was one activity that could endorse the continuation of learning and development at playtimes?

To ensure that children continue to learn and develop at playtimes, it is important that they are offered a wide range of games, activities, and equipment that aim to develop an array of skills. From physical, cognitive, and social skills, to cooperation and team working skills.

The only problem with this concept is that providing a wide range of games, activities, and equipment can be fairly costly, so it makes sense that any that you buy for use at playtimes will develop a number of skills simultaneously.

One which ticks all these boxes is  Giant Mikado – a giant version of the traditional game of pick up sticks.

The rules are the same as pick up sticks but the large scale of the ‘sticks’ changes the game, making it physically challenging and thus improving children’s motor control and agility.

As the giant game is best played by working in pairs or teams, children will also have the opportunity to develop a number of social skills, including cooperation and team working.

Thinking about the forces in every day (and Circus) life, plus a few extra strange science facts! Suitable for KS1 and KS2.

Feats of juggling, spinning and balancing to astound and amuse, a demonstration followed by workshops with lots of participation.

Why do objects fall, slow down, speed up, change direction or remain balanced?
Within the sessions the Fantastiko Circus scientist explores all of the concepts required for KS1 & KS2 ‘Physical Processes’ and a little more besides. Using practical examples, observation and experiment, he helps the pupils gain a better understanding of ‘Forces & Motion’. They are actively encouraged to participate and give their own observations and conclusions.

The circus science sessions are designed to introduce students to the idea of forces. The sessions are full of fun whilst giving pupils the opportunity to put technical names to what they are experiencing and is brilliant for getting them to start thinking about the activities from a scientific angle.

Areas covered include:

Simple forces: pushing, pulling, action and reaction, gravity, friction, speeding up, slowing down and changing direction.

Centre of Gravity (balance point), air resistance, springs, gyroscopic motion and even the speed of sound are also brought into the mix to explain why some things behave the way they do. Whilst these are outside the curriculum objectives, they are still experienced everyday and can be explained at a simple level.

Depending on the length of workshop or show the pupils can have the opportunity to learn skills and use our equipment whilst being encouraged to explain what is happening and also guessing what might happen next.

Sessions can be from 45 minutes to an hour as well as an assembly show with lots of audience participation.

Pupils that complete one of our workshops can receive a Fantastiko Circus Certificate to recognise and remember their achievements.

We also offer other circus workshops, experiences and entertainment.

Prices start at £275 + VAT for a full day £225 + VAT for a half day.

Free resources for science teachers

Children of all ages care about animals. Establishing links between science and animal welfare can be a great way of stimulating discussion of ethical issues in science.

The way our food is produced is a growing topic of debate and directly relevant to syllabus content such as selective breeding and food chains which feed humans. These issues can be brought to life by discussing different ways of keeping farm animals in organic, free-range or intensive systems.

We have free resources on animal welfare and sustainability in farming to help with all of these. You can order a DVD-ROM or invite a speaker to visit your school by replying to this email. You can also download films and worksheets on our website.

Our regularly updated resources include:

  • The Farm Animals & Us films which compare intensive farming systems with alternative methods of production
  • Science worksheets covering selective breeding and human food chains
  • How Should We Treat Farm Animals? – a card activity designed to promote small group discussion of different systems of production.

If you would like to order a free copy of our Farm Animals & Us DVDROM, with all the resources mentioned, or to invite a local speaker, please just email education@ciwf.org.uk.

If you would like to download these materials directly, including the films, or just to find out more, please go straight to our website which has details of all our resources for science including an archive genetic engineering film.

Free instruments for your school

Would you like this djembe set, worth £299, for free?

Every school who books a free CD recording project with us receives this 12 player djembe set worth £299, totally free of charge.

d

You will receive six 40cm and six 30cm authentic, solid-wood djembe and as you can see, the djembe are of a good size and suitable for both Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 children. The djembe would be a great addition to any hand percussion you may already have and assist in teaching rhythm, playing as an ensemble as well as other areas of the Music National Curriculum. Plus if you were to ever host a drumming workshop at your school, you can use your own djembe.

Our professional recording engineers come to your school with studio recording equipment, and spend the day recording your CD with you, for free. Our Interactive Recording Guide shows the huge educational benefit in the project for the children, and makes planning the project really simple with everything set out for you.

All you need to do is decide what you’d like to include on your CD – a performance or event, instrumental groups, the whole school singing, each class singing their favourite song or even your drumming. The CD is a treasured memento to be proud of, a great showcase for the school’s talents, and the recording is an amazing day for the children. You can even raise funds for your school from the sales of your CD. I have included some recent feedback from schools at the end of my email so you can see what other teachers have thought of recording with us.

The summer term is very popular for schools who want to record school performances and it is of course the last chance to record your year 6. Your CD could be as simple as each class singing their favourite song, along with any instrumentalists or whole school songs.

So you don’t miss out on this fantastic djembe set, it’s important to note that you need to record your CD in May, June or July. That leaves plenty of time to plan your recording but you’d need to register your interest with us soon so we can get the ball rolling.

If you’d like more information, you can give me a call or drop me an email and I’ll forward you our Interactive Recording Guide. I can also check the availability of any particular dates you may like to record your CD.

The importance of having a comprehensive literacy programme, not only in each school, but across the whole of the UK.

With reports suggesting that one fifth of children are failing to meet the expected Level 4 standard in at least one of the “three Rs”, it highlights the importance of having a comprehensive literacy programme, not only in each school, but across the UK.

Which is why MSL has devised The Complete Reading and Spelling Programme

This programme covers all 90 different spelling and sound rules and adds in ten sections on issues such as word patterns, suffixes, prefixes, homophones, and irregular final syllables, making 100 topics in all.

The 90 rules and associated topics can be seen on our website where you can see the structured order of teaching that we have introduced.

What we have then done is broken these 100 topics down into 20 modules, presented in an order which allows students to use the spelling rules as soon as they have learned them.

As a result of this structured approach, which includes placement & progress tests, you can introduce a pupil to the sequence from the very start. You can also begin work at a point where the individual will be revising key points, before moving on to areas of weakness.

A copiable printed version of each module costs £29.99, or you can order five modules together on a CD for £80 plus VAT. All 20 modules (including the 4 CD’s) are available for £450.

You can order the Complete Reading & Spelling Programme in a variety of ways:

  • On our website
  • By phone on 01536 399017
  • By fax to 01536 399012

Where Next for Inclusion?

From Rhetoric to Rights

Conference at the Institute of Education,

20 Bedford Way, London, WC1H 0AL

Despite the law enabling young people and parents to have a choice about mainstream education and the Government’s commitment to the “progressive ending of barriers to inclusion”, little progress has been made. In fact the number of children and young people attending special and alternative provision has increased and there is little evidence that this commitment is being implemented.

The reasons often cited as barriers to inclusion are:

  • that mainstream schools don’t deliver the education children with SEND need
  • that having disabled children and young people in mainstream schools has a negative impact on other children and young people
  • that inclusive education is not possible without more money
  • that there is no evidence that inclusion works

This conference will demonstrate that these barriers are false and with a human rights perspective and the willingness to be flexible and to change, children and young people with SEN and disabilities can be included in mainstream education and thrive. Their presence is essential so that schools reflect the whole of society.

Many schools are inclusive and many more would like to be more inclusive. Please join us for this conference. We will not only share some fantastic experiences, we will also be discussing what needs to happen at a national, local, and school and college level to make progress with inclusion.

With the massive changes to education announced last week there has never been a better time to really think about what education is for and how all children can be valued and included.

For more details about the conference please see the following link

Improve the uptake of STEM subjects at KS5 and beyond by implementing a comprehensive STEM programme

National STEM days/weeks/months are a highly effective way of igniting a passion for science, technology, engineering and maths. Yet it seems that this ignition may only be temporary as there hasn’t yet been a notable increase in the uptake of STEM at KS5.

Thus, students aren’t developing the specialist skills that are sought by so many UK employers in their bid to compete (and succeed) on an international level.

By implementing a comprehensive STEM programme, alongside your school’s involvement in national STEM days/weeks/months, your students will not only acquire a lasting passion for STEM, but also develop a skillset which is valued so highly by employers.

And so it is for this reason that Thinkers in Education are inviting schools to join their comprehensive STEM programme which will be fully funded by a grant for schools that have a low uptake of STEM courses at KS5.

Our all-in-one, externally funded, comprehensive STEM programme consists of:

  • A STEM activity day per year group per term for all your students
  • A STEM activity day per year group per term for your Gifted and Talented students
  • Teacher training sessions and resource kits for teachers in order to sustain the approach and improve provisions for the development of students’ STEM skills
  • Running ‘Family’ Saturdays in your school to include and educate the community about STEM
  • Providing after school STEM kits to sustain the approach and make a real impact.

We can arrange to help you with the grant application of up to £9000, but please do note that there are only a limited number of grants available so make sure to register your interest in our comprehensive STEM programme sooner rather than later.

For more information about our comprehensive STEM programme and to discuss how your school can get involved, please click here, call 01603 520866, or email us at events@thinkersineducation.co.uk.

Solving a problem that comes with teaching secondary school pupils basic literacy

A common problem that comes with teaching secondary school pupils who require additional support in literacy is that there is often a lack of interesting, informative and age-appropriate, ready-made material available.

Fortunately, Ark Educational has produced the “Literacy Through…”  Worksheets Series, which is a resource containing an extensive range of activity worksheets designed to support your pupils on their journey to becoming confident in their literacy abilities.

The worksheets within the volume are all designed so that they can be used either as a one-off or as a series of highly varied tasks. Activities range from comprehension questions and fill in the gap exercises, to filling in forms and completing a Wordsearch (for example).

Throughout, the volume encourages the development of fundamental literacy skills, such as: comprehension, vocabulary, descriptive writing, grammar, tenses, definitions, phonics, word-building, vowels, compound words and punctuation, among just a few.

What’s more, the resource is divided up into eight sections, each of which is based on a different subject area: Literacy Through… English, Literacy Through… Geography, Literacy Through… History, Literacy Through… ICT, Literacy Through… PE, Literacy Through… RE, Literacy Through… Science and Literacy Through… Technology.

To order the “Literacy Through…” Worksheets Series, simply fill in the order form and send it by fax, email, or post (see contact details below). If you have a school order number, you can also order by phone.

  • Telephone: 01536 399 011
  • Fax: 01536 399 01
  • Email: sales@firstandbest.co.uk
  • Postal address: First and Best in Education, Earlstrees Court, Earlstrees Road, Corby, Northants, NN17 4HH

Alternatively, you can order the “Literacy Through…” Worksheets Series online as a download for £20 by visiting http://www.absent-teacher.com/eworkbooks.html

If you quote HH10% into the message box when you make your purchase on PayPal, you will receive a 10% refund on your order.

What is the one classroom activity that will enhance your pupils’ confidence in, and enjoyment of maths more than any other?

There are only a limited number of activities around that are designed specifically to increase children’s enjoyment of maths.  And yet the more children do see maths as an enjoyable subject the more confidence they will have in the subject – and the more rapidly their studies will progress.

Which is why we created Magical Maths.

Magical Maths is a school based workshop aimed at either KS1 or KS2 students.  It is taught on a class-by-class basis with up to five classes being taught during the course of the day, with each class session lasting 45 minutes to an hour.

The sessions are based around the notion of magic, and indeed the practitioner who leads the sessions is a member of the Magic Circle.  Children practice and perform the magic tricks that are taught during the workshop – magic which is all based on National Curriculum maths.

As a result the children gain new mathematical insights and revel in their new-found positive relationship with mathematics.

To enquire about a possible booking please call me on 07870 215675 or email Jasmine@Jasminesmagicparties.co.uk with the words MAGIC MATHS in the subject line.

How can your school or college obtain FREE Collins English dictionaries?

Putting a dictionary in the hands of a student can not only help them develop their writing skills and make them a more confident speller but in some cases a few extra words spelt correctly can tip the balance between getting a grade D or a grade C at GCSE English..(and quite possibly in other subjects as well).

Collins English dictionaries are used in many UK schools and are widely respected for their accuracy and content.  They are ideal for prizes or incentives as well as for day to day use in lessons, homework and revision.

But did you know that it is now possible for schools to obtain FREE copies of Collins English dictionaries?

The Collins English dictionary lists approx. 15,000 words on 615 pages and is a normal paperback size (176 x 110 mm).  Suitable for students from KS3 up to A level, it has an RRP of £6.99 but schools and colleges can order @ £2.99 each, a saving of £4 per copy.

So what about the free dictionaries …..?

Orders of 100 or more copies will receive 50% extra copies free of charge, eg order 100 dictionaries and you’ll receive 50 extra copies free,  order 300 copies and get an extra 150 free…. and so on, pro-rata.  Schools can order any quantity but the FREE offer only applies to orders of 100 or more.

Further details of the dictionaries and this offer may be obtained from Signpost Educational Ltd., PO Box 999, London E14 6SH.  Tel: 020 7515 1797 or email: signpost@talk21.com.  Information may  also be found on their website: www.signposteducational.co.uk

PS. In addition to the dictionary offer, schools can also obtain “Student Essentials” sets, designed to meet the basic needs of students in most lessons.  Comprising three black ink ballpens, two full size HB pencils, metal sharpener, eraser and a 15 cm ruler…all packed in a clear “exam friendly” zip-up wallet from only 75p each ex vat.  Ideal for handing out in lessons or selling to pupils for everyday use as well as for exams.  Details on the website as above.

What is the single most effective way of raising student exam grades?

There is little more frustrating than a student who you know has plenty of ability within a subject, but who simply does not seem to be able to study and reveal his/her aptitude in exams.

Fortunately, however, there is a fairly simple way of helping such students overcome this situation so that they make far more of their study time, learn more rapidly, and develop an ability to use the knowledge that they have gained within examinations.

This approach breaks learning into two simple parts: learning how to study, and then applying this knowledge to the subject matter being studied.

Self-evidently, once the student can study in a more effective and efficient manner the student also becomes more adept at reproducing this knowledge in a meaningful way when required. Then, inevitably, the student’s grades will go up.

This is where Raising Grades through Study Skills comes in. The volume, which is available either as a photocopiable master or on CD (so that it can be placed on the school’s learning platform), focuses on the ways in which students can both be helped and can help themselves by learning more quickly and more effectively.

Since the first edition of this work was published it has been adopted in several thousand schools, in some cases being used within an individual department, sometimes across the whole school.

22 separate methods of learning are detailed in the volume, plus details of 10 teaching methods which can be used to help develop the learning approaches.

There is also a series of active learning assignments and a further 15 sections on memory and how students may enhance their own memory abilities and increase their ability to utilise the knowledge that they have gained.

Results from the use of this approach have shown that once students have been shown how to study and how to ensure that they can remember and use the material they have studied, the motivation gained from the rapid success that results becomes a factor in motivating them to ever further achievements.

The activities developed in this volume can either be set up as separate lessons or can be integrated into the existing timetable.

Raising Grades through Study Skills is available as a photocopiable book or on CD Rom which can itself be copied or loaded onto the school’s learning platform or intranet.

What is the simplest way to ensure that every locker has a key. No matter what

It is a sad, but inescapable fact of school life, that students occasionally lose the key to their locker.  Or “forget” to hand their key back at the end of term.

It’s annoying, but it happens.

Which means you will almost certainly need replacement keys for some of the lockers in the school, and you may even quite possibly need them on a fairly regular basis.

The solution to this problem is simple.  You simply call or email Keysplease, and tell us the code number for the lock in question, (normally stamped on the face of the lock) and we will supply you with keys for that locker.

We can even, if you wish, supply a new lock as well.

And the great benefit is that the locker keys can be supplied for as little as £1 each in some cases, which means that if you charge a deposit of £5.00 per locker, your costs of replacements and administration are covered.  Locks are available from just £5*.

Ordering is simple, by phone, email or direct online.  And there is a full list of the range of makes that we stock, on the web site.  But don’t worry – 99% of the locks in use in UK schools are covered by the manufacturers whose keys we stock.

A problem with LOtC is that…

…some subjects are easier to teach outside the typical classroom environment than others

Science, history, art and geography are all subjects which can be taught outside the typical classroom environment with relative ease – and it could also be argued that learning in such subjects is actually more effective when lessons take place outside the classroom.

Yet planning lessons outside the classroom can be a little bit more challenging in other subjects, such as literacy and numeracy.

Which is why Edventure has produced the Outdoor Cross Curricular Pack – to provide you with an array of resources that will support you in teaching your pupils about the many and various concepts of literacy and numeracy – outside the typical classroom environment.

The Outdoor Cross Curricular Pack comes in an extra strong storage box and consists of  Alphabet Bean Bags, a Fitness Dice, Foam Can Alley, Giant Wooden Dominoes, Number Bean Bags, Number Cones, Number Markers, a Resistance Parachute, a Starball, and a Target Mat (Including 8 Bean Bags).

Furthermore, we have also produced a number of free downloadable Game Guides, including a Guide to Starball and a Guide to Target Mat, to ensure that your pupils’ outdoor numeracy and literacy lessons are as enjoyable and engaging as possible.

More free downloadable Game Guides can be found accompanying our games, activities, and equipment at www.edventure.co.uk.

How to help KS3 students grasp the three fundamentals of written English

Ask most people today what the three fundamentals of written English are and they will probably struggle to define them.

And yet if students can grasp that there are just three fundamentals then they can start to see that the written language has a unified logical base, rather than being an endless stream of rules and regulations.

The three fundamentals are defined in the volume “Grammar and Punctuation for Key Stage 3” as Word Classes (adverbs, prepositions, etc), Phrases, Clauses and Sentences, and finally Punctuation.

This 300 page copiable book works through these three fundamentals, in each case breaking them down into their constituent parts.

Thus there are ten sections relating to word classes, five relating to phrases, clauses, and sentences, and eight relating to punctuation.  Each section is itself subdivided into between five and ten sub-sections, making it easy to find rules and examples on any specific topic that is required.

As such the volume is designed as a comprehensive reference source to be used throughout Key Stage 3 but it may also be used with students at key stage 4 who need remedial work.

Throughout, the book includes authentic examples collected from a variety of written sources. Through this mechanism the volume pays particular attention to those areas with which authors of all ages tend to have difficulties and offers an abundance of examples of current usage highlighting these areas.

Such examples are then followed by suggested improvements and by explanations justifying those improvements. Finally the relevant principles are practised through activities designed for pupils.

Anna Nolan, the author of Grammar and Punctuation for Key Stage 3, has worked as a freelance consultant to the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority and as a teacher trainer with the Edexcel National Curriculum Services.

Help your leadership team to continually improve

As a proactive primary school leader, you’ll know that one of the cornerstones of effective leadership is having the support of a strong, motivated and passionate team.

But even with a close-knit team, it’s possible to miss areas where you can build on existing skills or spot opportunities to develop new skills that will help you fill gaps in your team’s practice.

Two former primary heads – Ann O’Hara and Heather Clements – have created a system that helps your team find and fix these gaps.

Their answer – called What is Good Leadership (WIGL for short) – has been developed over five years, working with primary leadership teams in a wide range of contexts and drawing on national and international research.

Written to meet the specific needs of primary schools, the WIGL tool kit is already helping leadership teams like yours to:

  • Clarify expectations of leadership
  • Systemise judgements on effectiveness
  • Pinpoint areas for development
  • Promote strategic leadership
  • Support appraisal, development and effectiveness of middle leaders
  • Help with job descriptions and appraisal targets
  • Promote self-evaluation and 360 degree review of an individual or whole school team

So, What is Good Leadership?

What is Good Leadership is an in-depth, self review toolkit that provides clear descriptions of the expectations of middle leaders, specific to the roles found in most primary schools.

It is progressive – enabling future leaders to develop and improve their skills at each level and translate those skills into a more senior role over time. In fact, it helps teachers progress from early subject leadership through to senior leadership and headship.

Fully matched to Ofsted

It is also fully matched to Ofsted expectations, so schools using it can be confident that their judgements are soundly based.

Each tool kit comes fully loaded with a USB stick with guidance on using WIGL in a number of different contexts – from peer review to supporting mentoring, developing CPD and performance management.

The pack is priced at £175 + VAT and contains everything you need to start understanding and improving your team’s practice.

You can purchase What is Good Leadership directly from our bookshop.

Does it really matter which pantomime you choose to put on with the children?

d

Informal research over the past few years has suggested that most schools that put on a pantomime choose the story they wish to produce on the basis of personal favourites and a certain amount of  rotation so that the same panto is not offered two years running.

However, where the aim of the event is not just to put on a performance but also to provide a learning experience which offers the children specific insights, some pantomimes are more appropriate than others.

If we are going down this route, one of the most obvious places to start is with Dick Whittington which as a story has the benefit of being based on a real person (although not necessarily a real cat).

Thus we have a historical plot and the possibility of examining everything that is inherent within the panto. The tradition, the staging, the scenery, the props, the lighting, the use of the provided music against new songs, or new lyrics, dance, movement, acting… all can then become topics for study.

Of course, each topic is an option – it is possible to present Dick Whittington as a pantomime with the normal rehearsals and production to the parents and no further explanation. Or you can take one or more of the issues inherent within the panto and look more deeply at that.

This is the background to our decision to produce a pack based around Dick Whittington, but now re-written as Dick Ottington and his famous cat Tommy, by David Stoll and Michael Hinton.

The package includes:

  • a Director’s Script, with detailed page-by-page production notes
  • a Pupils’ Script
  • a Vocal Score containing thirteen new songs with piano accompaniment, as well as an overture and incidental music
  • a complete set of high-quality fully orchestrated backing tracks and sound effects.

The Director’s Script also has an extensive introduction to pantomime itself as a topic for study, including the traditions and conventions of this type of theatre.

There are also helpful notes on all aspects of putting on a school production from casting, organising rehearsals, writing new lyrics, making props and sound effects through to involving the audience. The material, therefore, can be used for a term’s study as well as forming the basis of the end of term production.

David Stoll is a well-known composer and songwriter who has also worked extensively with primary school teachers and pupils on creative projects.  His SEALSONGS are favourite assembly material, and his book on how to teach composing at KS2 is acknowledged for its helpful notes and suggestions. To go to his website please click here.

Michael Hinton is a teacher, writer and musician with many years’ experience of writing educational materials for schools abroad and in the UK. He works as Music Director with amateur dramatic societies and children’s theatre groups, helping them to stage musicals and pantomimes, and is the composer of hundreds of educational songs.

FREE FILMS AND DISCUSSION ACTIVITIES FROM COMPASSION IN WORLD FARMING

So, how do you engage students in discussion, especially those lacking in confidence? Well, as you know, you can:

  • Choose a topic they care about.
  • Provide an engaging film
  • Invite a visiting speaker
  • Provide activities which encourage small group discussion for those who don’t like to talk in front of the whole class.

We have free resources on animal welfare & sustainability in farming to help with all of these. You can order a DVD-ROM or invite a speaker by replying to this email. You can also download films and worksheets on our website.

Children of all ages care about animals. The way our food is produced is a growing topic of debate whether you are talking about the ethics around how we treat animals, the production of healthy food, how we can feed a growing population or provide rural jobs.

We have a range of regularly updated resources including:

  • The Farm Animals & Us films which compare intensive methods of producing meat, milk and eggs with alternative methods of production
  • The Personality Test – an engaging quiz which helps students examine their attitudes to  the use of animals to food from the point of view of four different philosophies
  • How Should We Treat Farm Animals? – a card activity designed to promote small group discussion

If you would like to order a free copy of our Farm Animals & Us DVDROM, with all the resources mentioned, or to invite a local speaker, please email education@ciwf.org.uk.

If you would like to download these materials directly, including the films, or just to find out more, please go straight to our website.

Quotes from teachers of English:

“This would be most useful to stimulate debate in Spoken English.  It would also be valuable as a starting point for project work in written English, particularly if accompanied by a photocopiable Teachers’ Pack.
In my experience, children are more interested in discussing animal welfare than any other topic.”

“A well presented and inspirational resource.
Excellent material for KS3 speaking and listening assignments
My classes thoroughly enjoyed the video. It stimulated discussion and was superb material for a discursive essay
A flexible resource which can be used for both speaking and listening and writing.  The support material was very helpful as well. It can be used for a variety of lessons.
I’m looking forward to incorporating the video and worksheets in the next term’s scheme of work. It is presented in a stimulating yet educational way. It is ideal material for oral and written work”.

“Video:  Excellent – led to some extremely interesting discussions about how farm animals are often treated. Pupils compared this with how we treat pets. … Invaluable as a resource – very few of our pupils had any concept of the video content …
Pack:  Excellent – most can be adapted for use with KS3/4 pupils of all abilities.”

“Many thanks for dispatching the literature and DVD. I’m just planning lessons and want you to know how impressed I am with both the content, the presentation and the appropriateness to young people. You have our support – just teaching the noun COMPASSION has been valuable.

English Literature Summer School 2016

A wonderful opportunity for students with a passion for literature to discover a range of new authors and texts, explore fresh approaches to familiar works and to prepare for undergraduate study of English Literature.

“Before attending the English Literature Summer School, I was not sure if I wanted to study this subject at higher level, but participating in such an academically driven environment, surrounded and taught by specialists who are so enthusiastic about their subject, has convinced me without doubt that I would love to pursue English Literature at university. If you have any reservations about whether this course would be useful – don’t hesitate! I had one of the best weeks of my summer, meeting so many interesting people, whilst learning about areas of literature I had never encountered before!”

English Literature Summer School Student 2015

Summer School Schedule 2016

The English Summer School – Part 1 will cover literature dating from 650AD to 1790AD, including Middle English, Medieval Literature, Chaucer, The Renaissance, Shakespeare, Restoration Literature and the Rise of the Novel. In addition we will also be covering Historicist and Feminist critical approaches as part of this Summer School. Taking place 25th-29th July.

The English Summer School – Part 2 will cover literature dating from 1790AD to the present day, including Romanticism and the Gothic Movement, Victorian Sensation Novels, Literature and the British Empire, Modernism, Postmodernism and Contemporary Literature. We will be covering the ‘Death of the Author’ and Postcolonial criticism as part of this Summer School. Taking place 1st-5th August.

The English Summer School – Part 3 is new for summer 2016, and will cover Contemporary English Literature, including prose fiction, poetry and drama. We will be covering Psychoanalytic criticism and ‘Theories of the Canon’ as part of this Summer School. Taking place 22nd-26th August.

Please note that students can attend all Parts of the Summer School, or just one or two, depending on their literary interests. Although the courses complement one another, they can also be treated as stand alone events and there is no requirement to have attended Part 1 in order to register for other Parts.

Thematic coverage by period, combining close study of texts with lectures on historical and cultural context, and setting major authors side-by-side with less familiar works, will help students to appreciate the development of prose, verse and drama in English from the middle ages to the present day. We will not only engage in close textual analysis of Medieval, Renaissance, Romantic, Nineteenth Century, Modernist and Contemporary writers, but also evaluate these movements in light of the authors’ own critical writing.

As well as looking at the purely written word, we will also cover literature in performance, comparing play scripts to film adaptations and reading through sections of the works using different performance theories. As an integral part of Part 1 of the Summer School we will attend a performance of Macbeth at the Globe Theatre on the Southbank. Literary theory and criticism will play an important role in the Summer School and students will be invited to examine texts they have studied in the light of competing theories of the nature and value of literature and the role of the critic.

This Summer School is suitable for all students aged 15-18 with a passion for literature, and will be particularly useful for those looking for a taste of undergraduate level engagement with texts and theory.

Practical Details:

The cost of booking any single Part of the English Literature Summer School £465, the cost of any two Parts is £850, and the cost for all three Parts of the Summer School is £1200. The Summer School will be held at a University of London venue in Bloomsbury (please note that these courses are not residential, and accommodation must be arranged independently if required).

There will be a limited number of bursary spaces available for those who would otherwise have financial difficulty in attending – please see our website for details.

To book a place please visit http://www.debatechamber.com/summerschools/english-summer-school/ call us on 0845 519 4827, or email info@debatechamber.com.  Places will be allocated on a first come first served basis.

Practical, hands on and a great way to introduce problem solving and management skills

Ideal for STEM and re-usable at only £39.95

So how do you give young people the opportunity to solve problems and develop creative thinking skills whilst they are still at school?

STEM resources have been developed to provide teachers with a way of giving students experience of solving problems and gaining confidence in how to respond to challenges. Good maths based problem solving exercises are hard to come by.

So in order that students might see how things can easily go wrong and how, by working together and sharing information they can go right, we’ve put together a business exercise called Safe Delivery which is designed to give students experience of solving a difficult maths based problem and to develop creative thinking skills.

The exercise is suitable for small teams of KS4 and 6th form students who will each act as managers in a business.  Each manager will have individual briefing notes which they must read carefully and then communicate to the rest of their team.

The Scenario – The MD has ordered a huge fire resistant storage cabinet for the business that will house a new ‘server’ on which information will be stored. It is Friday afternoon and the cabinet is being delivered Saturday morning. It must be installed in the General Office by Monday morning – an office floor plan of the building is provided.  A team meeting is called and the managers sit down to work out how this problem will be undertaken.

This resource contains: For the students:
A memo that sets out the task
5 detailed briefs for different managers in the business and one scribe
A floor plan of the office building showing all the obstacles that need to be overcome

For the teacher:
Clear teachers’ guidance notes that explain how to run the exercise
A snapshot crucial information chart
The written solution
The solution on a power point presentation

There are more details at…
http://c-l-e.co.uk/buy-teaching-resources-online/safe-delivery-exercise/

You can pay and download the exercise direct from our website using Paypal or you may wish to pay with a purchase order number. Simply e-mail your purchase order number to us and we will send the exercise to you along with the invoice for payment.  For more information e-mail Julie@c-l-e.co.uk

How can you provide for the most able child in a year group when the other 119 take all your energy?

For the most able children, it can be lonely at the top. However academic the school, there will always be some children whose interests and abilities are beyond those of their peers. They may hide those abilities in order not to be seen as “weird”, or display them and suffer a social penalty.

Even for those with the social confidence to be themselves at school, there’s not much space in a crowded curriculum for their interests to flourish. Teachers overwhelmed by the pressure of getting the bulk of children exam-ready struggle to provide the individual attention they need.

The best resource for exceptionally able children is… other exceptionally able children. Extra-curricular initiatives such as philosophy clubs or occasional trips can allow such children to enjoy one another’s company, but these are still limited to those within the same school and often year group.

At GIFT, we’ve been providing opportunities for exceptionally able children to meet and learn for over 20 years. The residential weekends and Easter and Summer schools provide a whole new, aspirational peer group for bright secondary students, and lifelong friendships are formed.

Each day, students work in small groups on a whole-day project chosen from three or four options. Projects are “an inch wide and a mile deep”, exploring an unusual area in depth and with space for sustained endeavour and creativity. Each group is led by an experienced G&T specialist, and the atmosphere is more informal and “adult” than is usually possible in school. There are substantial breaks when students can socialise, and further activities in the evenings which many GIFTers use to try something different, challenging any narrow views they have about where their talents lie.

“I’ve been meaning to write that my daughter absolutely loved the Easter residential course.  She really enjoyed the entire week and enjoyed being with the other students. She has a real longing to return.  Although she’s not one that lacks friends, she said she realises now what it means to really bond with others.  She said, ‘there ARE people just like me.’   I have honestly never heard her so genuinely happy.  Many thanks for offering these retreats for our kids.”

At the 2016 Easter School, some of the projects on offer are around philosophy & roleplay, Shakespeare’s mysterious double life, the engineering challenge of the Dambusters’ bouncing bomb,  improv comedy and Homer’s Odyssey. On the May residential weekend, there’s time travel, Kandinsky, Colditz and the challenge of being Chancellor of the Exchequer battling the deficit.

Each place on the Easter school or May Residential booked through this offer comes with a free copy of “The Philosophy Files” by Stephen Law, one of my favourite books for gifted teens. You can see full details of the courses at: www.giftcourses.co.uk/hamiltonhouseoffer

How can you offer your pupils a new and exciting playtime experience – each and every playtime?

Each pupil has their preferred playtime activity – talking, playing football, reading, or joining in with whatever the latest craze is in the playground. But for some, there is only so much talking, playing football, reading, and joining in with the latest craze that they can do.

Understanding what dyscalculia is can allow schools to help sufferers improve their maths and obtain reasonable results in their examinations

It is a strange but true fact that while most of us working in schools have come across dyslexic children and adults, many teachers have not had direct contact with anyone who is dyscalculic.

And yet dyscalculia is not only a genetic issue, as is dyslexia, it is also as common within society at large as dyslexia.

So why is it that we don’t come across dyscalculic children as often as dyslexic children?

The reason is probably that many schools recognise that they have a small number of children who are poor at maths because they have missed some schooling or failed to grasp specific lessons.

The nature of the subject, which is of course utterly cumulative, means that some children fail to grasp certain concepts simply because they failed to grasp what went before.

This is, of course, utterly different from English, where the fact that I might not be able to spell “was” does not mean I won’t be able to learn “because”.  In maths, however, if I can’t do division I will struggle to understand fractions.

Furthermore there can be social reasons why children do poorly at maths.  Missed time at school can be more detrimental in maths than in most subjects, and there seems to be a greater tendency for parents to suggest to their children that they never understood maths at school, so it just “runs in the family”.

In short there are many reasons why dyscalculia might not be seen as a special need but rather as a consequence of parenting, poor attendance, etc.  As a result specialist tuition and support may not be given as early as it might be with dyslexia.

Understanding Dyscalculia: An Introduction for Schools examines the five main causes of dyscalculia and sets out the methods of working available which can help pupils overcome their dyscalculic problems. The book contains short sections which can be photocopied to give out to other members of staff in school, to worried parents, and to governors, so that everyone can share in the awareness of what dyscalculia is, and how it can be tackled.

Above all the book shows that once we understand and accept the causes of dyscalculia we can adopt appropriate methods of teaching to overcome the problem. Research suggests that most children who gain appropriate help in school can overcome their dyscalculic difficulties and achieve an acceptable grade in secondary school examinations, thus allowing entry into further and higher education.

The book, which is available in copiable form so that it can be shared with colleagues throughout the school, is published by the Dyscalculia Centre, a leading provider of teaching materials for dyscalculic individuals. The Centre also publishes a range of books for special needs teachers working with dyscalculics, and provides on-line testing facilities for pupils and students who are thought to be dyscalculic.
