5 Tips to Improve School to Parent Communication

Is your current parent communication strategy as effective as it should be? Can you identify which parents are least engaged? Are parents getting more involved as a result of your communications?

Parental engagement is in the spotlight; we look at 5 tips that can give your school to parent communications a boost

1. Share the big and little stories.

Parents want to know that their child’s school has the ambition and drive to achieve their vision. Sharing plans, ideas and projects on a regular basis will help parents understand what your school is aiming for and what role they can play in that journey.

Sharing the day to day news, successes and achievements will not only help parents feel closer to their child’s education but it will also provide discussion topics for parents to speak to their child about when they come home from school.

2. Two-way communication.

Communication between parents and schools should be two-way. Collaborating with parents by asking for feedback, ideas and comments will lead to improved engagement.

Asking for views from parents will confirm the important role they play in supporting their child throughout school life. The current Ofsted framework also sets out that inspectors should ask for evidence that the views of parents are sought after.

3. Accessible and consistent.

Using one platform for school communications that is accessible across multiple devices at any time will not only make it easier for parents to get the whole picture but will also make that platform the go-to place for trusted school information.

4. Go beyond the school gates.

Sometimes the biggest impact on pupils can be the decisions taken outside of the school gates by local or central government policy makers. Sharing Sector news such as Pupil Premium updates and changes to Ofsted inspection criteria on a regular basis will help parents understand the expectations on your school and how national or local policy can directly impact their child.

5. Monitor Results.

How many parents are you reaching? Which parents are least engaged with your communications? Are parents getting more involved and expressing their views? A good whole school communication platform should be able to give you these answers and subsequently enable schools to identify those parents that are the hardest to reach. This allows for more informed decisions to be made on how best to engage with that group further.

SchoolCal is unique in the market place by providing a web, mobile and application based platform designed specifically for schools.  Schedule unlimited messages, emails and dates to be sent to specific groups, individuals or everyone.

Making Maths Magical

What is the one classroom activity that will enhance your pupils’ confidence in, and enjoyment of maths more than any other?

There are only a limited number of activities around that are designed specifically to increase children’s enjoyment of maths.  And yet the more children do see maths as an enjoyable subject the more confidence they will have in the subject – and the more rapidly their studies will progress.

Which is why we created Magical Maths.

Magical Maths is a school based workshop aimed at either KS1 or KS2 students.  It is taught on a class-by-class basis with up to five classes being taught during the course of the day, with each class session lasting 45 minutes to an hour.

The sessions are based around the notion of magic, and indeed the practitioner who leads the sessions is a member of the Magic Circle.  Children practice and perform the magic tricks that are taught during the workshop – magic which is all based on National Curriculum maths.

As a result the children gain new mathematical insights and revel in their new-found positive relationship with mathematics.

To enquire about a possible booking please call me on 07870 215675 or email Jasmine@Jasminesmagicparties.co.uk with the words MAGIC MATHS in the subject line.

Emotional literacy is not a luxury

Developing Emotional Literacy in Schools

A school which seeks to promote emotional literacy will create an environment in which pupils are happier, eager to learn and enthusiastic to attend each day and where the teachers, too, feel positive about their work.

Time spent developing emotional literacy is thus not a luxury but will bring you enormous benefits including better grades and a positive school ethos through: improved relationships due to increased empathy and compassion among both staff and pupils; a reduction in bullying; an understanding and acceptance of individual differences; and raised levels of motivation and achievement. A better understanding of emotions can also help young people deal with those anxieties and worries which can ultimately lead to problems such as eating disorders and depression which sadly are becoming increasingly common today.

This photocopiable book is in two parts: the first part explains what emotional literacy is and the benefits it brings; the second part contains practical activities for you to use in your classroom. The activities can be used with students of different ages although the way the subject matter is introduced may need to be adapted according to the maturity level of your group.

Developing Emotional Literacy in Schools is available as a copiable spiral bound book or on CD Rom. The book comes with an unlimited photocopiable licence for the school, and costs £24.95 plus £3.95 delivery for either the book or CD. If you wish to buy both together the price is £31.94 plus £3.95 delivery.

You can order in four different ways. In each case please quote our reference T1679emn. Sample pages can be viewed prior to ordering on http://pdf.firstandbest.co.uk/education/T1679.pdf

A great way to start or round off The Greeks topic.

A great way to start or round off The Greeks topic.

Pupils can speed through the planning stage and write better Greek myths (in pairs) using my Greek myths writing frame

I am a children’s author who offers assemblies and creative writing workshops for all ages and abilities. Holding a writing day is a great way to start or round off The Greeks topic.

Please email workshop@spartapuss.co.uk for prices and availability. I also offer a wide range of assemblies and workshops – everything from The Celts to the Stone Age.

Thanks

Robin Price

What happens in your Greek assemblies?

Pupils take part in lots of fun and interactive things including: Meet the Monsters, Sparta vs Athens, make laws with Draco the Tyrant, Act out a Greek play using masks etc.

How does the writing element work? I follow the assembly up with ‘Accelerated Writing’ workshops where children write their own stories in pairs. This is sure to generate some epic Greek tales!

Who is this for? Sirens and Spartans are a bit too scary for Reception, (I do a special assembly for younger children)  Everyone from Y1 up is welcome to attend my assembly. I tailor the content of each workshop to suit Y1-Y6.

Who are you? I have written 14 books suitable for ages from Reception to Y6, including The Olympuss Games series (which is set in ancient Greece in a world ruled by cats.)  My latest book is called The Maze of the Minopaw. Parents in Touch said: ‘Please, do introduce them to your child; they are such fun and they will encourage an interest in ancient history!’

Imagine the whole school

Imagine a whole school picture… without the hassle of getting everyone together.

In recent years, the whole school picture has, sadly, become a bit of a thing of the past.

Whereas it used to be customary for an image of the whole school to be taken every few years and then hung in the school hall or in the reception area, for many schools today the production of such a picture is seen as too much of a problem or too expensive.

And this is a shame, not least because a series of whole school photos taken over many years will invariably have a huge impact on visitors to the school.  For such photographs impart a sense of continuity, permanence, and style.

And today it is a fact that the taking of a whole school photograph is easier and a lot less expensive than it has ever been.

Furthermore, and quite amazingly, there is no need for a complicated rig to be set up for everyone to sit or stand on together.  Nor does there need to be any great disruption to the school timetable as there is no longer any need to get everyone together at the same time.

Now I can understand that this might seem impossible – to have a full school picture taken without all the disruption, setting up the rig, and gathering everyone together.  But indeed, it can be done.

What’s more, the whole production is now less expensive than ever before because of the new techniques involved.

To see an example of a whole school photograph shot in this individual way please click here.  Alternatively, if you would like to talk about this process or make a booking, please:

It’ll stop them losing it

When it comes to students losing their keys or cards, how can your school save time and money on organising a replacement?

The answer lies not with organising a replacement, but instead with preventing your students from losing their locker key, lunch card, or registration card, for example, in the first place.

And an increasing number of secondary schools are finding that issuing their students with lanyards (so they can keep everything together and on them at all times) is an effective way of reducing the incidence of students losing such important items.

Saving schools a significant amount of time and money on organising replacements.

Image Logo regularly supplies secondary schools with lanyards for their students that have on them the school’s branding (including its name and contact details). This ensures that, if a student does actually manage to lose it, there’s a reasonable chance that it will be returned to the school.

We have a choice of lanyards in our range, including:

Ribbon Lanyards

Top Lanyards

And 10mm Lanyards.

You can find more information about our lanyards at the website links above. If you require any other information or have any questions please do email sales@image-logo.co.uk or call 01323 745710.

Delivery normally takes 15-20 working days from artwork approval, but just in case time is tight we do have a wide range of Express items which could be turned around in 5 days (from artwork approval).

What’s more, if you are looking at getting any other branded items for your school, Image Logo UK Ltd has a wide range of different products available, all of which can be marked up with any details of the school that you wish. You can see the whole range on our e-book.

How can we best prepare students for the workplace?

What are we to make of the student who, at a job interview, checks her mobile for messages?

Most young people who enter the workplace for their first job, are, on day one, utterly bemused.

Of course, to some degree they will be prepared, for they will have heard stories from parents, older siblings, friends who left school a year before…

Unfortunately, 95% of these stories will be at best irrelevant to the workplace they are entering or at worst utterly wrong in every regard.

For entering work is not just about the skills a young person brings to the job in hand.  It is also about the young person’s attitude.

If the employer and the staff already in place treat the new employee as a responsible adult who is going to work hard for the company, and the young employee doesn’t realise that when a job is complete he/she should find out what to do next, there is already a significant misunderstanding of how to behave.

Indeed, knowing how to behave in the work place can be the most important issue on day one.  The issue reported in the headline above might look bizarre in the extreme, but it has been reported and is just one very graphic example of students simply not knowing how they are supposed to behave.

The problem is, however, that many employers have themselves not properly thought through how they are going to treat the newcomer.  Which is why it is vital for students to understand exactly what sort of situations they might encounter and what they can do about them.

What Employers Want and Expect deals with these issues, as well as with the new demands that employers, in this post-recession environment, are now placing on staff.

The book recognises that under current legislation, employers have an almost total right to dismiss employees who started work after April 2012 during the first two years of employment for any reason, and notes that the average time people now spend in a job is only two years and four months.

Which means, in fact, that around half of the working population have virtually no protection against dismissal without reason.

The book takes the view that in order to stay in work the vast majority of young employees must help themselves by being aware of the current needs and attitudes of employers.

The volume, which is fully copiable and so can be put on the school’s learning platform, copied to disk or photocopied, covers such issues as reliability, accuracy, punctuality, honesty, smoking, communication, written work, swearing, etc.

There is also a commentary concerning what one can write on social media.  As the book points out, many employers will check Facebook and other sites used by their employees to ensure that no one is saying anything amiss about the company that pays the wages.

It is, in fact, essential reading for everyone going into a job for the first time.

The volume can be bought as a photocopiable book or on CD Rom.

The benefits arising from improved typing skills

Students who can touch-type will deliver more accurate, better presented and easier to read work. That will save you and your teaching colleagues’ considerable time in deciphering and marking badly written scripts.

Meanwhile, Ofqual has publicly stated that online exams should replace pen and paper for today’s students. The major awarding bodies have already welcomed this view. When the inevitable happens, students who can type accurately at speed will perform better in tests.

So to improve the keyboard skills of your pupils so that they can type quickly, accurately, effortlessly and safely, then look no further than Type&Test Ltd, the UK’s leading specialists in online touch-typing training and assessment.

Whatever your budget for this activity – or even if you don’t have one – we have a solution for you!  Our range of options even includes an income generation scheme.

Simply click here to reply to this email using the subject line ‘Improved typing skills’ and we will email you a link to our Schools Brochure.

How best to help EAL pupils and students

What is the most effective way of working with pupils who have English as an additional language?

Students who have English as an additional language now form a majority in one in nine schools in the UK; the number has risen by 20% during the last five years.

Many schools estimate that it takes about a half term for the average EAL pupil to gain sufficient working knowledge of English for them to move into the mainstream classroom, while spending time with the intervention teacher each day.

However, although this seems a simple process there are many issues that arise, ranging from the exact legal requirements in terms of dealing with these pupils through to the best approach for induction and admission of these new arrivals.

There are also issues of engaging with the parents, the question of which teaching and learning strategies are the most effective, and the support and encouragement that should be given to more advanced EAL learners.

Indeed, many schools are now asking what a good induction programme looks like. Indeed when it comes to EAL is one approach as good as another?

This matter was highlighted by the publication of the New Arrivals Excellence Programme which was issued in 2007 and represents a summary of best practice in EAL in the country. It includes case studies and does give a clear source of information on what schools can do in relation to EAL students.

This is not to say that there is a single process and approach which every school should follow, but it is often felt that it is helpful for schools to consider a range of approaches when thinking about their EAL students.

From the sort of approach adopted come the appropriate teaching and learning strategies, and indeed the role of the EAL Coordinator who can ensure that the plan that the school has developed is being followed at each turn, and that any gaps in learning and performance between EAL language pupils and students and those who have English as their first language are narrowed and ultimately removed.

These are the issues examined in the new extensive volume The EAL Coordinator’s Manual.  The 170 page volume comes in copiable form so that it can shared with any members of staff in the school who work with EAL students.

FAO the Literacy Co-ordinator – Theatre plays an important part in British culture.

Why a trip to the theatre can inspire an interest for children’s literature.

The tradition of British Theatre stretches back to the Mystery Plays of the 10th century, and there are good arguments to suggest that it is the most enduring and popular of all the art forms in the UK.  Indeed along with Broadway in New York, London’s theatre land is one of the two pre-eminent centres of theatre in the world.

Which is perhaps the strongest reason there is for taking children to see live theatrical productions.  The only question is, which performance should one take the children to?

Perhaps top of the list will always be a theatre performance that is taken from children’s literature, and indeed with The Railway Children, we have a drama that is inspiring and endlessly engaging for children and which of course they can experience through the film and the book as well as at the theatre.

Our production is staged in a brand new 1000 seat theatre at King’s Cross, built around a real train track, with a vintage locomotive that steams into the theatre to really bring it to life.

What’s more, we offer all schools a unique experience by hosting a drama workshop after the curtain closes, which can be undertaken on a class by class basis within the school or at the King’s Cross theatre itself.

Each workshop lasts for just under an hour and is adapted to suit the age of the class attending. By bringing sections of the script to life we will enhance the children’s experience of the show, which will encourage them to write engagingly about the production and their experience.

The Railway Children drama workshops are available for all primary schools that bring 60 or more children to The Railway Children stage show. And workshops for smaller groups are available in the theatre foyer before the performance.

Additionally our Education Guide includes activities for teachers and students and behind-the-scenes interviews with the writer and the director. To download our education pack, please click here.

The ticket cost for The Railway Children production is £16.50 per person, and if you opt for the workshop too, there is a small additional cost of £3 per child (providing there is a minimum number of 60 attendees for the workshop).

To get a taste of what the show is all about, you can watch our short trailer here.

How to get Top Marks in Edexcel French IGCSE Writing Questions

The essay writing questions might seem daunting at first but this is one section of the paper where you, as the candidate,  are in control. As long as you answer the questions and cover all the bullet points, you can decide what to write. This is an easy way to score marks, and the writing sections of the paper count for 30 marks (10 for the shorter writing task and 20 for the longer writing task) which is 25% of the total marks. If you do well in this part of the paper it can make all the difference in being able to move up the grade boundaries.

This pack will explain what is required for the two writing questions for the Edexcel French IGCSE specification. Sample questions will be looked at, with tips for essay techniques, followed by sample essays, with examiners’ comments. Writing tasks from each of the topic areas will be looked at, for both the shorter and longer writing tasks.

The five topic areas are:

1. Home and Abroad
2. Education and Employment
3. House, home and daily routine
4. The modern world and the environment
5. Social activities, fitness and health

Don’t leave teachers out of assessment decisions

Ensure it’s your teachers who make pupil progress decisions, not your software

Children’s progress needs to be measured in line with a commitment to high quality, in-class assessment for learning. But, many of the pupil progress trackers on the market simply aren’t cutting it.

That’s because lots of the systems are driven by tick-box thinking. Based on formulas that calculate overall objectives, they only succeed in taking assessment decisions out of teachers’ hands.

When Sue Hackman decided to work with us to create the Climbing Frames Assessment app, she wanted to create a system that went beyond simply adding up objectives, or that limited the school to just measuring Maths and English.

That’s why we’ve made sure that the assessment app is quick, manageable and user-friendly.  While also allowing your teachers to draw progress judgments directly from their own knowledge of how pupils are doing.

Teachers will find it easy to take an all round view of where each child is, based entirely on the new National Curriculum, ranging from not yet started to substantially secure.

Not just for the core subjects, either. Climbing Frames covers all National Curriculum subjects.

The app also lets you know at a glance what each child has achieved and where they need to go next.

As a school leader, you can see reports on what pupils have not yet attained at individual, class and cohort level. Giving you a clear indication of what teachers have covered and what remains to be taught.

The app gives your leadership team the solid data you need for accountability.

Tracking and reporting data is transparent and easy to share. So, you have the information you need to understand how individuals, classes and cohorts are progressing across all subjects.

If you would like to see how the Climbing Frames app supports your teachers and leaders, I would be delighted to organise a demonstration of the app.

You can book your demonstration quickly and easily online at www.climbingframes.org.uk/book-your-demo/.  Or you can contact me directly 0121 224 7584 and by email at james@imaginativeminds.co.uk.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Religious experience – from quasi-sensory phenomena to Sigmund Freud

What is the difference between a quasi-sensory phenomenon and a charismatic experience or a mystical experience?

It’s a fairly fundamental question and one that students of religious studies need to understand before they get too far into the religious experience component of Religious studies AS and A2 levels.

That, of course, is only the start, for there is also the question of Channels, Sources and Occasions of Religious Experience.  There’s also the need to know about such thinkers as Rudolph Otto, William James, Sir Alistair Hardy, Richard Swinburne, as well as those hostile to religion such as Ludwig Feuerbach and Sigmund Freud.

The copiable book, Religious Experience, (also available on a CD so that it can be put on the school’s learning platform) deals with all these points and many more in a way that gives the student a basic understanding and then allows, and indeed, encourages, debate beyond this point.

In short, it covers the spectrum of issues involved in Religious Experience and the theories advanced to explain them. It provides an introduction to and discussion points on these main types of religious experience and will enable students to obtain an overall grasp of the subject matter. It looks at the different kinds of religious experience and the different channels or occasions for religious experience and also discusses religious experience in the context of the major religions.

After taking in The Ongoing Significance of Religious Experience the book moves on to Problems of Religious Experience, including Empiricism, Kant, and The Logical Positivists.

The volume concludes with Discussions of Religious Experience, which ranges from private and public experiences to perception and moral attitudes.

Throughout the book are exercises/activities for the students to complete. These can form the basis for written homework or for group discussion in the classroom.

Religious Experience is available as a copiable spiral bound book or on CD Rom. The book comes with an unlimited photocopiable licence for the school, and costs £19.95 plus £3.95 delivery for either the book or CD. If you wish to buy both together the price is £26.94 plus £3.95 delivery.

Create a welcoming classroom

What is the most effective way of making the
classroom a place where pupils want to be and
want to learn?

If a classroom is a place where pupils want to be, it is a place where pupils will want to learn.

But too often, classrooms are painted in a neutral (or boring) colour – appearing unwelcoming, and a place in which pupils would prefer not to spend their time.

However it is not always possible to change the wall colour for a number of reasons (time, budget, etc.), but one solution is using the quick and easy option of wall art stickers.

At Wall Glamour there are a whole range of wall art stickers suitable for any classroom, including alphabet stickers, musical instrument stickers, animal stickers, transport stickers and inspirational quote stickers, among a few.

Assessing pupils’ progress in reading and spelling

Is it really possible to teach reading and spelling using just one resource on its own?

In an ideal world there would be one teaching resource that covers every phonic, every spelling choice, every word pattern, and every spelling rule in the English Language and is suitable for each and every one of your pupils, no matter their age or ability.

What’s more, using such a resource would naturally make it much easier to assess and track your pupils’ progress in reading and spelling.

Fortunately there is one such resource – the carefully structured Reading and Spelling Rescue Programme developed by Multi-Sensory Learning.

Literacy skills are introduced and clearly developed through a series of 20 Modules in over 1,000 imaginative structured worksheets. The Record Chart for each Module has been designed to increase motivation by showing attainable goals, revision activities and space to indicate completed tasks.

Every Module Includes 50 top quality structured worksheets, dictations to reinforce new spelling choices, structured word lists with the emphasis on key words, revision activities and a record chart, full and detailed teaching notes, and placement and progress tests in order to monitor your pupils’ progress.

Every Level has 5 Modules which are A4 ring bound copymasters. There is also an option to have the same resources on CD-ROM. The CD-ROM format makes it quick and easy to print as often as required, with the additional benefit of making individual workbooks.

You can order the Reading and Spelling Rescue Programme in any of these ways:

How to get A* in Spanish?

What is the best way to take students from a predicted lower grade up to the achievement of an A* at GCSE?

As with the French version of this book the author has analysed the writing and the speaking criteria of various exam boards and has come up with a simple and clear summary of these criteria written in a student friendly language. These criteria have been divided into four sections; each section corresponding to a GCSE level while at the end of the booklet students can find a very useful list of recommended idioms and high level expressions.

Additionally the booklet includes the conjugation of the 50 most used Spanish verbs, including the modal verbs, into different tenses.

This is followed by different language structures which the students can use to develop their writing.

The use of this booklet is proven to improve students’ levels not only in writing and speaking, but also in listening and reading.

How to get A* in Spanish? is published as a download so that you can receive immediately a copy onto your computer which you can print out for colleagues and your students as often as you want.

There are sample pages from the book at http://pdf.firstandbest.co.uk/authordownloadsamples/T1834samples.pdf and you can order it at  http://shop.firstandbest.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=814

The price is £10 plus VAT (the VAT can be reclaimed in most cases by the school).

17 super secondary schools

How does your secondary school plan
to meet local demand?

The BBC has reported that councils will have to generate a predicted 80,000 additional secondary school places in order to accommodate the increase in the number of pupils who will be graduating from primary schools over the next four years.

It has been decided that rather than building new secondary schools, some 17 existing secondary schools will be expanded and transformed into what will be known as “super-sized” secondary schools – which should be a more financially viable option for councils.

Naturally, there are some concerns about whether the same standards of behaviour and academic attainment can be maintained following the expansion.

However, School Minister Nick Gibb doesn’t believe this to be a cause for concern and is quoted in TES as saying, “If you look at Shanghai, their schools are very large and they produce some very high standards of education.”  Shanghai High has more than 3000 students and is considered as one of Shanghai’s top state schools.

Regarding the benefits of super-sized schools, Head teacher Tony Alexander said: “We are able to provide a broad curriculum that other schools could not afford. And we have a wide range of children with different qualities and attributes, which can only be good.”

Whether your school has plans to be super-sized or not, it is likely that some expansion will be necessary in order to meet local demand. This can bring the added benefit of being able to choose the design of your new classroom so that it represents your school’s values.

For example, if being eco-friendly and providing pupils with plenty of learning outside the classroom opportunities is valued by your school, you may want to have a classroom built which represents these values, such as those from The Learning Escape.

The Learning Escape’s classrooms are bathed in natural sunlight, warm in the winter, cool in the summer and are able to withstand whatever extremes of weather climate change throws at them.

They are designed to be eco-friendly, not least with the option to have sun pipes, living sedum roofs, solar water systems and solar power systems installed.

To see the Learning Escape classrooms that schools have designed and that we have built recently, just click here.

Or to discuss any aspect of your project or to book a free survey, just call us on 0800 917 7726. You can find more information on our website.

What’s more, there are leasing options available to your school and you can find more information about financing here.

Would you like to increase maths and financial literacy skills in key stage 3 students?

Would you like to increase maths and financial literacy skills in key stage 3 students?

We have designed a series of practical team based exercises for key stage 3 that will help to develop students’ financial literacy, maths and business awareness skills.

The Paper Tower Exercise will help develop teamwork, communication and problem solving skills. Students have to work together to build the highest Paper Tower for the least possible cost. Financial and maths skills are put to the test as students work out how much they have spent on resources. Time penalties apply.  The exercise easily fits into a single lesson and contains a resources checklist, timings and assessment criteria. Cost only £10

The Oil Rig Platform Exercise A practical problem solving exercise designed to simulate the workings of a team of engineers, trying to find a solution to a problem.  Students are divided into teams and challenged to build a small scale model and work out how much it costs to build using only set materials. To test for safety the platform must be able to support the weight of a brick! Will your students design it so cheaply that it collapses or will they spend more money to make it strong and sturdy?  The exercise runs over one lesson.  The winning team is the one who can build the oil rig, support the weight of a brick and is the cheapest to build.  Cost only £20

The Jazzy Jotters Exercise the task is to design, produce and sell Jazzy Jotter notebooks and make a profit.  The class is divided into small teams and job roles agreed.  Each team is given a £10 loan which they use to buy raw materials and basic equipment.  Financial decisions are taken and by working together they strive to make a profit within the time allowed.  Students enjoy dealing with the money and haggling for a good deal.  Contains worksheets, money, job roles, account sheets and is really easy to deliver.  Cost only £25

The Dice Exercise The task is to run a small business that manufactures Dice. Students develop their maths and financial literacy skills and their knowledge of fixed and variable costs, the calculations of total costs, revenue and profit. Students are divided into small teams, given management job roles and a production line formed. Teams are given a £40 loan to buy raw materials and basic equipment.  Financial decisions are taken, equipment purchased, the deadline set and production begins. The accountant must keep a careful record of every purchase and every sale. Will the students haggle to get a good deal or just accept the price offered? Who will make a good profit and win the exercise? Cost Only £25

Special offer – Buy all four items for £70

You can pay and download the exercise direct from our website using Paypal or you may wish to pay with a purchase order number. If you would like to take advantage of the special offer price or order with a purchase order please e-mail Julie@c-l-e.co.uk. Your order will be dealt with within 24 hours.

It’s School Dance Week

What can School Dance Week do for you, and what can you do for School Dance Week?

Dance is the second most popular physical activity within primary schools, and yet curiously in the past there has never been a School Dance Week through which schools can celebrate their involvement with dance and share with each other ideas and suggestions relating to dance in schools.

So, we’ve rectified that by setting up the first ever School Dance Week.   And even though this is our first step forwards on what we hope will be a long-running campaign to get dance in schools noticed, and help all dance teachers develop their work in schools, we’ve already found a fabulous group of partners who have shown their willingness to work with us.   The list of partners is below.

Also we have over 100 participating schools of all sizes and types from all over the country, and we’d welcome your involvement with us too.

What we are asking you to do is to sign up with School Dance Week (it’s completely free and comes with no commitment – you just show your support for the idea.)    This will give you the opportunity access free resources and opportunities from all the professional partners who have supported the very start of School Dance Week.

Also you might like to have a look at the website we have developed, which now has details of the findings from our research into the state of dance in primary schools.

Additionally there is an article which reveals exactly why dance is not just another activity for children to enjoy, but is one of the prime activities that strengthens children both mentally and physically.

Now that we have got going we can say that next year’s School Dance Week will be even bigger – and we will be commemorating those schools that have chosen to support us at our very start with a Honour Board of Founder Schools.   All you have to do is sign up – there is absolutely no cost and no commitment.

To start on this journey all we ask is that you visit the School Dance Week website and complete the simple form.

From here on, having established School Dance Week our work is now to establish working relationships between schools and dance professionals, creating a potential outlet for long term educational work and increasing your Arts Mark.

And if you have your own ideas as to what School Dance Week can do in the future, we’d like to hear from you.  Please click here to contact us.

Here is our list of Founding Partners – to whom we are very grateful indeed.

  • Pineapple Community
  • The Movement Factory
  • Balletboyz
  • 2 Faced Dance
  • Motionhouse
  • Tilted Productions
  • The Place
  • C-12 Dance Theatre
  • Northern School of Contemporary Dance
  • Dance East
  • West End in Schools
  • Youth Dance England

I really do hope that you feel there is something for you in this new initiative, and that from this beginning we can really increase an awareness in the importance and benefit of encouraging dance in schools.

How to maintain the children’s daily routine when outdoor play isn’t an option.

Perhaps the most important aspect of playtime for children at Sure Start centres is that it feels different from the rest of the day.

But of course, when it is very cold or raining the normal routine of playtime is disrupted.  Which is why increasing numbers of Sure Start centres have introduced a wet playtime policy.

There is a dual point to this. First, it ensures that all colleagues know exactly what the routine is when it is wet outside during playtime.

Second, it ensures that for the children, playtime still feels like playtime. It is still a break from the other activities that the children undertake during the day.

This means that the Sure Start centre should have a range of indoor play activities that are entirely different from those they use as part of active learning or learning-through-play.  The change of activity which children get during clement weather is maintained.

As a result of providing a set of entirely different play activities to be used only at wet playtimes, the concept of a “break” is maintained, and children then return to their regular indoor activities once playtime is over.  Even though they haven’t been outside.

It is for this reason that Edventure regularly supplies Sure Starts with an Infant Wet Playtime Pack, specifically designed for young children, which contains a total of 18 games for just £70. Additionally, this particular pack comes with a free colour and shape game.

You can find our full range of wet play packs on our website.

Connecting with the human interest

Videos that will support your students’ understanding of the complex concepts in psychology and mental health lessons.

Using personal accounts in psychology lessons typically has far more of an impact on students’ understanding and the ability to retain information than dry statistics or book work.

This is because, for the most of us, we connect with the human interest.

In response to this, MHTV has produced a whole range of DVDs which contain personal accounts so that students are able to develop a greater understanding of the complex concepts they are required to learn in psychology and mental health lessons.

DVD titles include:

Psychological Defence Mechanisms for students who are required to understand defence mechanisms. It looks at denial, projection, regression, and repression.

Clinical Case Studies: Volume Four which explores four case studies of psychosis from symptoms to treatment, including symptoms of delusional perceptions, paranoid delusions and auditory hallucinations.

And Phobia: Volume One – a case study exploring a severe avoidance behaviour that effects a person’s everyday life, including her relationships with others. The programme follows her successful treatment using psychological techniques.

You can order any of the above titles online at www.mentalhealthtv.co.uk or by email to info@mentalhealth.co.uk.

What’s more, by using the discount code save2015 when you order these titles, we will reduce the cost by 10%.

Now more than ever

What more can be done to support your pupils
in preventing, managing and overcoming
poor mental health?

With 76.9% of school leaders reporting that they have had to support a student with poor mental health, and 65.8% reporting that they have had reason to make a referral to CAMHS, it is vital that support is readily available for students, now more than ever.

One way that you can support your students in preventing, managing and overcoming poor mental health is by offering them a comprehensive understanding of mental health through your teaching in PSHE lessons or elsewhere.

As a result, MHTV has produced a whole range of DVDs which you can use to help develop your students understanding of mental health. Titles include Extreme Anxiety, Depression, and Anorexia Nervosa, among just a few.

You can see the full range of our DVD titles on our website. And if you quote save2015 when ordering we will give you a 10% off the prices shown on the website.

The smallest thing

Even the smallest most inexpensive item can have a significant effect on student behaviour and parental perception.

Can a pen make a difference? Could a pen change the way a person thinks and behaves? Might it actually make a person perceive their environment in a different way?

It seems rather strange that an inexpensive item such as a pen really could change the way students and their parents might see the school and their place within the school community.

And yet pens which carry the school’s name, presented perhaps to each new pupil after their first half term at the school, do have this impact. In a recent survey over 90% of schools that had given a free pen to pupils and students felt that the approach helped enhance the identity of the school.

Indeed presenting after half term can be quite an important moment, because by this time the new school year has become established, the newness of the classes and timetable has worn off. Now here is one unexpected token of association that takes the pupils, students, and parents by surprise.

This is particularly important when it comes to the question of how the pupil or student sees the school. Being given a pen bearing the school’s name becomes a symbol of the world that the pupil is part of, and it will undoubtedly be shown to the parents.

And, of course, there is always the opportunity for the school to recover much of the cost of the pens that are given out in this way, for as well as giving away a pen to each pupil or student in a selected group, the students can also have the opportunity to buy a school pen later on.

All you have to do is order slightly more than you need for the initial give away and hold the spares in stock. You might be surprised at just how fast they are sold!

You can find more information about our Contour Ballpen with coloured grip on our website.

Stonewall Training

I am writing to invite your school to a training session on tackling homophobic, biphobic and transphobic bullying in secondary schools on 14th October 2015

Homophobic, biphobic and transphobic (HBT) bullying is endemic in secondary schools. 55 per cent of lesbian, gay and bisexual students say they’ve experienced homophobic bullying, and almost nine in ten secondary school teachers say pupils regardless of sexual orientation experience it in their school, with nine in ten also hearing homophobic language (phrases like ‘that’s so gay’) in school. Almost all teachers say they want to tackle this problem, but lack the training or support to do so. These issues impact upon student lives, grades and how a school addresses these areas are scrutinised by OFSTED.

Sir Christopher Hatton Academy has worked closely with Stonewall and were the first school to achieve their prestigious “Gold Award”. We are an ethnically diverse school with a very active peer support team and were pleased to be graded as Outstanding by OFSTED in January 2015.

‘Without a doubt the most helpful training I have attended in 17 years of teaching!’

‘Superb range of ideas that will introduce staff to the practical aspect of tackling homophobic behaviour.’

99.9 per cent felt more confident afterwards and would recommend the course to others

Feedback from courses in 2014 – 2015. Statistics from The School Report (2012) and The Teachers’ Report (2014)

Stonewall Train the Trainer courses give staff the knowledge, tools and confidence to train colleagues in tackling HBT bullying and supporting lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans young people.

Attending a course means your school will receive year-long membership of Stonewall’s School Champions programme, including an extensive pack of resources, free access to their School Role Models programme and ongoing support and guidance. All this – the course and a year’s membership – are just £150 +VAT (£100 + VAT for qualifying schools – contact us for details)

This course will be delivered over a full day at Sir Christopher Hatton Academy – a Stonewall Training Partner with particular expertise in tackling HBT bullying.

I do hope you or a colleague can make it. For more information or to book, please contact Mr J Barker via Barkerj@hattonacademy.org.uk ASAP

Best wishes,

Take your students to Mars

A STEM related Saturday Workshop aimed at G&T students, held in your school, and at no cost to the school.

Gifted and Talented students tend naturally to be particularly interested in latest developments in science, technology, maths and engineering.  They tend to take more notice of the news and become ever more fascinated by possibilities.

Of course, it is difficult to adjust the curriculum every time a big story that could be used with such students comes up.  And that is why the Spectacular Saturday Workshops series exists.

At present one of our most popular events is Target: Mars – a one day project suitable for secondary students from year 7 to 13.

Here we have six heroic individuals embarking on what turns out to be an ill-fated colonisation of Mars.

Each group knows that they are involved in a space race and must work together to achieve the ultimate glory of the first landing on the Red Planet.

But they have to invest their funds wisely, determine which of their team members has the skills to complete each of the changes, undertake experiments, and solve the problems they face.

They use the techniques that are fundamental to scientific research but meanwhile have to overcome a terrorist plot, an outbreak of disease, industrial espionage, and all the dangers that Mars itself will present.

Quite simply, you choose a day on which you can open up your school, and we will come in and run the event based around the theme you choose.  Our costs are paid for by parents (usually around £35 per student) although the school can, if it wishes, subsidise the cost in certain or indeed all students from its own funds.

The Target: Mars team will need access to the hall or a large room in which the project takes place from 8.30 to 15.45 and during the course of the day will provide different versions of the event for different age ranges.

We will also supply posters and leaflets to your students and all the promotional literature for parents, which you can put on your headed paper, or edit if you wish. There are more details about Target : Mars here.

Thinkers in Education also undertakes two other Saturday projects, “Bunkered” (in which an asteroid is heading towards Earth) and “Dead on Time” (in which crime scene investigators unravel a suspicious death) – and there are details of all three projects on our website.

For further information, please call us on 01603 520866 or email events@thinkersineducation.co.uk

From decoding to comprehension

Activity books that will support your pupils on the journey from decoding to comprehension and on to critical thinking.

In order for your pupils to become confident in their comprehension abilities, they must first be confident in their ability to decode texts. Once decoding has been mastered they are well on their way to becoming confident in their comprehension abilities.

Towards the end of their primary school career, an ability to think critically about texts will also be established where they will be pondering questions, such as: “what does the writer really mean?” and “why has the writer chosen to use these words?”

With Topical Resources’ Comprehension Activity Books for Year 1 to Year 6 you can support your pupils with this journey, all the way from decoding texts, to comprehending texts, to thinking critically about texts.

You can see sample pages from each of the activity books by clicking on the links below:

Comprehension Activity Book – Year 1

Kind regards

The unexpected threat

What is the most unexpected unwelcome event
that can befall a school?

It is hard to imagine a school in which senior management know that the law is being broken and yet in which they turn a blind eye and continue to allow the offence to happen.

And yet, if you were to go onto Google and type in “School breaches data protection” you will find page after page of examples of schools that have suffered the fines, ignominy, and bad publicity that comes from being caught out.

No school ever deliberately breaks the Data Protection Act.  Every school has a Data Protection policy in place.  But it happens.

The worst of it is that most of the people who break the Act are actually trying to be helpful, for the most common cause of breaking the Act involves a member of staff  transmitting sensitive data via email – perhaps to their home address so that they can once again continue working at home.

The data might be personal data including staff and pupil names, dates of birth, addresses, national insurance numbers, school marks, medical information, exam results, SEN assessments, and staff development reviews….

Sometimes they even transmit sensitive personal data which covers race, ethnicity, political opinions, religious beliefs, membership of trade unions, physical or mental health, sexuality… The difference between processing personal data and sensitive personal data is that there are greater legal restrictions on the latter.

The person who is responsible in such circumstances is the head teacher as it is the head who holds the role of Data Controller in a school.  Equally, the Board of Governors are responsible for ensuring that the school has taken appropriate measures to ensure data confidentiality.

The fine for getting it wrong is up to £500,000 from the Information Commissioners Office.

And yet the solution is easy.  You just need to ensure that if you are sending any information via email, or putting it on any transportable device, it is encrypted.

Emailsecurity supplies email encryption software to schools in the UK.  There is nothing to be installed on individual machines, just some very simple changes to your email configuration, and typically takes less than 10 minutes to get you up and running.  That’s it.  You use your existing email address as normal.

The pricing model is also really simple and is payable annually.

Up to 149 pupils (8 email addresses) £ 199
149 to 299 pupils (15 email addresses) £ 299
300 to 699 pupils (35 email addresses) £ 399
700 to 1000 pupils (50 email addresses) £ 799
More than 1,000 Please call for details

There is no installation charge, no upfront fee, and no long term commitment.  Please contact schools@emailsecurity.eu and we will be more than happy to work with you and your local IT support partner to get you up and running within 10 minutes.  Alternatively please call Tel: +44 20 3598 4798

Creative Writing Club

Start a Creative Writing Club
in the click of a mouse

Many schools are running a creative writing club  – either after school or at lunchtime in the library. It’s a fantastic way to boost writing. However, dreaming up new writing materials every week is a time commitment.

Now you can start a lunchtime or after school club with zero preparation time!

  • Our interactive writing Apps make writing fast and fun
  • New topics every week mean they’ll never run out of things to write about!
  • Publish pupils work in our Hall of Fame on in your own book.

Plus: use it to write class stories on your topic: the rainforest, floods, space, the Stone Age, the Romans, the Greeks, the Bronze Age, the Anglo-Saxons, Romeo and Juliet, Great fire of London, unicorns, football, hamsters and sci-fi.

There are 30 topics planned this year (two new topics are added every week in term time). Suggest a topic and we’ll create an activity especially for you.

Why do some students get jobs and others not?

Do you want this job or would you sooner check your text messages?

People who find themselves undertaking interviews of students who are seeking a job or who are looking for a place on a course love to share horror stories.

They talk of the young women who don’t turn their mobile off or, worse, actually check their phone while in the interview.

They share stories about school leavers who write outrageous comments on social media about their school, college or current employer, and then can’t believe that their potential employer or course organiser has actually looked them up.

Such tales of course tell us what we already know: that many young people are very naïve when it comes to applications and interviews.

Which is why we produced “101 Ways to be Successful at Job and College Interviews.”

Like all good manuals this one starts with a premise, and here the premise is that an interview is a two way process, allowing the candidate to get an idea of what the company or college is like as well as being a chance to impress potential employers and lecturers.

Thus we ask the most obvious question: “Why do you want this job/course?” and moves onto the variations, such as thinking about “Why do you want to work for this company”, “Why do you want to study here?” and so on.

Each of the 101 Ways is an exercise or an activity as well as providing information on what to do in different situations. Thus 101 Ways will enable your students to prepare thoroughly for first job or college interviews and help them to manage any nerves.

Students can dip into chapters that will help them brush up on specific bits of preparation or use it as a workbook from start to finish as a complete guide to being successful at interviews.

This book has been written by an experienced recruiter who both trains recruiters and helps inexperienced interviewees of all ages. Each chapter covers a different aspect of the interview process with 101 practical and thought provoking tips that have been proven to work.

Teachers may also use this book as a class resource in Careers, English, Drama, PSHE, Citizenship or other lessons to prepare pupils for interview practices or the real thing. Each chapter is followed by a series of suggested exercises, mostly working in pairs or small groups, which develop the key themes of that chapter.
