Enterprise Education The Course Book

So fundamental is the notion of Enterprise to our society that it is rather sad to think that many young people leave school – and indeed many leave university – without much of an idea as to what enterprise is all about.

One way or another they earn money, and generally speaking they spend it. But the whole basis of the system, and their part within it, can often remain a mystery.

It was because of the utterly fundamental nature of enterprise within our society, and the fact that so many young people don’t seem to grasp what it is all about, that we commissioned “Enterprise Education: The Course Book”.

Written by a teacher who went on to set up his own successful business this copiable volume starts from a detailed review of what Enterprise Education is, and then helps the students come to terms with what the world of business is all about.

The volume explores the notion of Enterprise and how it can be applied throughout the school, as well as examining the career implications of enterprise.

The volume then covers the setting up of a work-related programme before going into examples of enterprise opportunities including simulations, school generated projects and engagement with business.

At the end of the book there is a set of forms that can be used in terms of an agreement with companies over work experience, report forms, placement letters, etc etc.

Enterprise Education: The Complete Coursebook includes everything that is required for the successful implementation of the Key Stage 4 Enterprise Education programme, from classroom teaching materials to an in-service training programme, from work-based learning modules to simulations and live enterprise projects.

Enterprise Education: The Complete Coursebook is available as a book or on CD and includes:

  • INSET activities – as a result of which staff will feel confident in their knowledge and understanding of the enterprise culture within industry and how it will impact on pupils who are exposed to it.
  • Champions of Enterprise: Pupils can evaluate local business enterprises and draw their own conclusions as to which firms are truly involved in enterprise culture.
  • Simulations: Mini-enterprises in which pupils can engage in an enterprise activity in a controlled environment.
  • School generated projects: Pupils organise an actual event or act in the local environment in a planned and organised way.
  • Real life situations: The Coursebook sets out programmes which ensure that the organisation, the school and the pupil all work together to generate a true understanding of enterprise.

The copyright licence allows the copying from either the book or the CD, so that all students can have pages relevant to their study at any time. It is also possible to place the CD on the school’s learning platform, so that students may access it at any time.

To fish or not to fish

Help your Geography, Politics and Economics students learn about the complexities of fish stocks, overfishing and quota systems in sustainable marine management. As well as seeing programmes like Hugh’s FishFight, Eco-Fish the game will support the exploration of the balancing of sustainable resources on a global basis.

Eco-Fish is a really fun game which allows students to learn by accident as they play. On a tabletop or floor mat, the game supports a number of curriculum areas in one kit. As well as learning about the importance of protecting the fish in the sea, students will learn about:

  • Political discussion and decision-making;
  • Risk Management
  • How to be more enterprising & overcome problems;
  • Working in a team to make decisions;
  • The importance of debate and agreement to keep peace between nations;
  • Tensions that can erupt between different teams and countries around finance and food;
  • Shared interest in protecting natural species from over-harvesting;
  • How much fun you can have with a few plastic fish!

As with our Enterprise Soapbox resource, Eco-Fish comes with a manual, lots of background information (based on the North Atlantic Cod Stock survey) and everything you need to keep students busy for a couple of hours…with extension ideas to help with a full-day session. None of the parts need replenishing so once bought, it can be used many times. It’s also brilliant for Primary Days and Summer School activity. You can also see it being used with business people and Senior Leadership Teams in the video below.

The Secret to Successful Revision A practical guide for GCSE Geography teachers

Imagine a father of one of your students visiting you. He’s rather disappointed with his daughter’s exam results and can’t readily reconcile how hard the teenager worked with the lower than expected grade. “What went wrong?” is the question he poses.

All too often, the answer is simple. The type of revision that has been done at home by this promising student has been ineffective, focusing on knowledge acquisition rather than understanding.

It is this observation that leads to the thought that the knowledge one needs to give to students is that knowledge is not quite as important as they think.

The typical weighting for knowledge in a GCSE Geography exam is only between 30 and 40% of the marks. But, despite this fact, left to their own devices some of my students would happily devote near to 100% of their geography revision time to the retention of knowledge.

Some, in pursuit of the magical A* grade, will recreate their notes into beautifully colour co-ordinated works of Post-It note art or elaborate mind maps that spread like trailing vines throughout their bedroom and threaten to take over their parents’ house. But still, despite all the work, these students will ignore the other 60-70% of the marks that are not knowledge based.

So, it may be argued that in the classroom the teacher no longer has to emphasise knowledge. As creatures of habit, students will still spend plenty of time on knowledge acquisition, leaving the teacher free to fill their revision sessions with activities that enable them to practise applying that knowledge and honing their skills.

“The Secret to Successful Revision” makes clear that students retain more by actively re-working their knowledge in different ways than by reading revision guides or following revision lessons. It deals with methods of revising geography which take into account the way exams are marked. It covers “command words” and “maximising marks on terms and definitions”, simplifying case studies, using data from graphs and maps, and much more.

The Secret to Successful Revision is published as a download so that you can receive immediately a copy onto your computer which you can print out for colleagues as often as you want.

Keeping the school minibus on the road without the worry, time and hassle

Of course, it is possible that you absolutely adore keeping a check on the roadworthiness of the school minibus. Or it might be the case that someone else has taken the job on and is doing the checks for you.

If either case is true, then I’d like to offer my congratulations – because the truth of the matter is that in most schools looking after the minibus is actually listed within the school’s risk assessment as being down to your department.

But if you are the person with whom the buck stops, there is something you can do the lessen the load.

First off, it is fairly obvious that the newer the minibus, the less likely there is to be a problem. But, as we all know, few schools have the money to buy a new minibus – hence the ageing fleet.

However, where a minibus is leased the huge upfront payment for a new bus disappears. And. what’s more, there is an second benefit. And it is this…

Maintenance and servicing, (including tyres, clutch, battery, etc) can be covered within a leasing agreement.

So you get a double benefit. A new minibus, which is less likely to have problems plus the option of having a professional undertake all the standard maintenance and servicing.

This effectively reduces the onus that is put on the person who is nominated in the school’s transport policy to look after the minibus. Indeed, it was to overcome issues and difficulties such as this that we introduced full maintenance as part of our minibus leasing.

Not only do the schools that use our service get a new minibus without having to use current capital to buy it, they also get our certification that the bus has been checked by qualified engineers.

Given that the majority of school minibuses on the road are over five years old, this approach can be particularly valuable.

If you would like to know more take a look at our website – www.minibusleasing.co.uk/school-minibus.php.

Promoting exercise within the school

Do you have any budding Olympians in your playground or would you like to promote exercise (both structured and at playtime) for the whole school?

If so we have designed and created ‘The IQ Line’ – probably the ultimate activity to promote the ABC’s (Agility, Balance & Co-ordination) in the playground.

But don’t take our word for it – see what your colleagues and children say:

  • ‘Improves your balance & memory’ (KS2)
  • ‘Great brain teaser’ (KS2)
  • ‘Good for fun & exercise’ (KS1)
  • ‘Great to see who can do it the quickest’ (KS2)
  • ‘Brilliant – the children use it over and over again’ (Teacher)
  • ‘We enjoyed giving it a go’ (Parent!)
  • ‘Superb for getting the children involved in PE’ (Sports co-ordinator)

See for yourself, how The IQ Line could help generate more exercise, team building, structured play – and – provide the whole school with a fantastic PE aid

What is the inevitable consequence of ever increased levels of recycling?

The most obvious answer to that question is that more recycling is good for the environment, and that means that we and our partner schools are all doing our bit in removing unwanted computer equipment from schools and disposing of it in an environmentally friendly manner.

But there are other implications too. For PRM Green Technologies it has meant moving into a new purpose-designed recycling centre.

And that is also good news, because it means that more and more schools are putting out their unwanted equipment for recycling. It doesn’t cost the school anything, and it gives a good lead to parents and the students when they see what the school is achieving.

As for the new recycling premises, it means we have been able to be involved in the design of the new centre.

Given that the new premises are (at 16,500 square feet) considerably larger than our old work environment, it means we have been able to expand our daily collection services from schools without fear of overloading the recycling work.

And, although no one has ever broken into our premises to rummage among the equipment waiting to be recycled, we thought it not a bad idea to up the level of security on the site, just in case.

So we have put in high security gates and fencing, plus 24 hour CCTV and alarm systems throughout. As we said already, no one has tried to break into recycling areas, but we’ve also increased our vetting procedures. Again, just in case.

All this means there is even less danger of our service being interrupted than there was before. We continue to offer a 100% free service to schools across the UK mainland.

So we can continue to provide an excellent and cost-effective method of disposing of old IT and telecommunications equipment in an environmentally-friendly manner, free of charge. If your school has not used us before, there is no question about whether we will have the capacity to take on your unwanted IT equipment.

The answer is, yes we can. We have the space.

Sarajevo – the spark that ignited the world!

With 2014 marking the centenary of the outbreak of The Great War, what better place is there to visit to bring this period of world history alive?

Sarajevo is one of the most historically interesting cities in Europe. It is a place where the Western & Eastern Roman Empire split; where the people of the Christian west, Eastern Orthodox and the Ottoman south, met, lived and battled. At the start of the 20th Century, its name became synonymous with the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand and the subsequent outbreak of WW1. Sarajevo City will be hosting a range of commemorative events to mark the centenary of this landmark event in world history.

At School’s Own, our aim is to provide you with affordable, ready-made or bespoke courses for GCSE and A level history that allow maximum uptake amongst your students. Our prices start from as little as £425, including flights, individual travel and medical insurance, in-country travel, food, accommodation and essential equipment for all activities for a 5 day/4 night tour.

School’s Own is a specialist in this area and we provide all forms and risk assessments and offer resources to meet the requirements of your own school’s curriculum and the learning needs of your students. We can even arrange a pre-tour inspection visit for you and a colleague at no extra cost to you or your students. The Foundations of Wealth

Although it is rooted in the concrete realities of life, economics often appears to students as a series of abstract nouns – productivity, supply, demand, price, surplus, scarcity and so on… that inevitably create a barrier between the student and the economic principles of enterprise.

From the author of comedy series “Yes Minister” and “Yes Prime Minister”, Sir Antony Jay, “The Foundations of Wealth” has been designed to present basic economics to pupils in an absorbing and entertaining way.

Keeping students’ attention whilst presenting economic principles through combining high quality animation and documentary film material, “The Foundations Of Wealth” features 10 video episodes on 2 DVDs with accompanying downloadable support material.

“The Foundations of Wealth” tells the story of how a primitive community makes its way from a subsistence economy to prosperity by a succession of devices – division of labour, mechanisation, money, markets, price etc. – as we follow two animated characters and the community they live in, through a series of economic changes and developments that illustrate the foundations of basic economic principles and mechanisms, which are then presented at work in the real world.

Carefully researched and developed with teachers to provide a valuable tool for teaching economics in the classroom, “The Foundations of Wealth” episodes are also suitable for any course where the basics of economics need to be introduced or explained in a clear, memorable and entertaining way!

What is the most effective way of improving reading skills at Key Stage 2? Especially for boys.

In a totally ideal world the work each child is asked to do would be geared to that child’s specific individual needs.

Unfortunately, achieving this ideal means testing each child and then devising teaching material based around the results of that child’s tests. A huge task.

However, there is a way around this through using the initial assessments provided as part of the World of Words, an online literacy programme.

Once the children have undertaken an assessment they are automatically directed to the level of activity that is best suited to their ability and skills. Each level has its own theme so that a child who moves from one level to another will find that as he or she progresses there is more material to work on.

The materials provided include Narrated and Animated Stories, Educational Games, Factsheets (with test questions covering a range of topics that are broadly related to the theme of that level), Poems and a Speed Reading Programme.

Through this approach the World of Words focuses on ten main literacy skills, from reading and comprehension with multiple choice questions to practice using nouns, verbs and adjectives. Further activities range from vocabulary and word association to reading a variety of material from different genres, including poems, magazines and newspapers.

Thus World of Worlds raises the literacy standards of children, especially boys. The programme has been designed by Excell3, a national educational charity established since 1999, in consultation with boys, girls, parents, teachers and cutting edge IT designers.

A free 7 day trial is available. To get the trial email us at info@excell3.com with your name, your school name and email address.

World of Words costs £29.99 for a single individual to use, but for a school it’s £295 for 60 children. However, as a special offer if you subscribe by 17 May you will get the programme free of charge until the end of this summer’s term.

To see the program please take a look at www.worldofwords.co.uk.

How can assembly songs provide a positive and hugely creative experience for young children?

SEALSONGS is a collection of assembly songs which aims to get children engaged through the experience of making and creating music. The lyrics were written with considerable input from Year 4 and 5 pupils, so speak from children to children, and the musical backing tracks were professionally recorded.

But the resource goes further and offers teachers detailed advice on writing new lyrics, leading singing and other ways that SEALSONGS may be used in the classroom. Thus it enables teachers to give young children the positive experience of working with others in creating new songs within the SEAL framework. There is also guidance for non-specialists in how to teach songs.

The SEAL themes are:

Song 1: New beginnings
Song 2: Getting on and falling out
Song 3: Say no to bullying
Song 4: Going for goals!
Song 5: Good to be me
Song 6: Relationships
Song 7: Changes

Two further general songs – one about writing songs and one providing a Rhyme Game – are also included in the pack.

JENNY MOSLEY (Founder of Quality Circle Time) said “SEALSONGS is a wonderful gift to any adult who wants to truly help their class or school embed SEAL as a way of ‘being’ with ourselves and others. We all know that song can lift you to a different spiritual dimension – David Stoll has given us the perfect package to help even the most music-shy amongst us to engage young people in the process of creating heart-warming songs as part of a creative team….. This is an excellent resource.”

HOWARD GOODALL (National Ambassador for Singing) said “These SEALSONGS have the authentic ring of children’s ideas and feelings in every line. This, for me, makes it a valuable and empowering set of musical tools….. with excellent supporting materials and explanations.”

Purchase of SEALSONGS includes a licence for full use of all the material within the school, including recording new versions of the songs. The complete package is split into different files so that schools may choose which elements they wish to record or print.

Sample music can be downloaded from www.pdf.firstandbest.co.uk/music/SEALSONGSSamples.rar

You can purchase SEALSONGS in the following ways:

1. As a download, price £10 plus VAT

2. As a copiable book plus CD, price £19.99 plus £3.95 delivery

A school trip to Munich or Frankfurt by air will be less costly than you might think and will increase the number of days you can spend in the city

Whether you are taking students to Frankfurt (the business and financial centre of Germany) or Munich (famous for its culture, and particularly its architecture), the journey is going to be a lot swifter and a lot easier if you travel direct by air.

Of course, once you are in Frankfurt you will see everything from avant garde skyscrapers to museums and from theatres to the financial centre.

In Munich you will be again be noting the architecture, along with a cultural scene and museums that are at the very least equal to those of Berlin, not to mention the world class technology and science museums like the Deutsches Museum and BMW Museum.

Increasingly school trips to both cities are being taken by air for the two simple reasons that air trips are quicker than coach and ferry and, in many cases, are less expensive.

Thus the amount of time spent in the city of your choice increases dramatically for school parties going by air with the journey completed in a couple of hours.

In fact, given that it is normally possible to fly from an airport near your school to either of these German cities, such arrangements can add up to three more days spent in the desired destination rather than on the road and at sea.

Additionally you can choose the price range, and you can choose the hotel that is right for you – near the airport or within the city or region that is your final destination – rather than take the one selected by the tour operator.

Our reservation technology enables us to give you the most up-to-date travel options, all the time. We book and issue our own tickets enabling us to keep full control of your booking and ensure your journey meets your needs.

As we are ABTA and ATOL holders you can be assured that you and your students are fully protected should the airline fail (as recommended by the Health and Safety Executive for schools).

Because we have so many locations to and from which we can fly, the best way to explore the possibilities is to either call one of our specialist group reservation advisors on 020 8429 2900 or email us at groups@germantravelcentre.co.uk with the details of your requirements.

A Level OCR F292 and F297: 2013 Case Study Resource Packs for Business Studies

As you will know, the F292 and F297 pre-release case studies were made available earlier this month.

  • F292 focuses on a struggling steel manufacturer – Moffett Steel & Designworks Ltd. The booklet gets dramatic as the manager’s leadership style sees conflict with the staff!
  • F297 is all about bicycle retail and hire firm Cavendish Cycles Ltd, which has several important strategic decisions to make.

ZigZag Education, with new author team Simon and David Dyer, will be working hard to dispatch these resource packs to you by 8th April, giving you time to fully prepare your students for the exam.

Previous editions received excellent feedback from teachers:

  • “I thought it was great – clear, concise coverage of the case study absolutely straight to the point. No irrelevant information given. Gave the students a tremendous amount of confidence… Other revision packs are too long! Students switched off… Whole-heartedly endorse this revision pack. Invaluable resource for students.” – Mrs D Dixon, Lecturer, Customer (2012)
  • “The layout of the data material and the example mocks were welcomed by the students… It provided reassurance and supported work already completed… It got to the point… Use this as a key reference point.” — M Bushnell, Head of Business & Satisfied Customer (2011)

ZigZag resources are available as ‘copy masters’ or in editable format and come with a site licence, allowing you to pay once and copy as often as you need, or put on your server for multiple use.

The A Level OCR Pre-Release Resource Packs are available as a photocopy masters with site licences (£39 for F292, and £49 for F297):

  1. Easy-printing PDF files (add 30%+VAT), or
  2. PDF with editable Word files (add 50%+VAT).

What is the simplest way to accommodate more students in the canteen, while reducing behavioural problems through the lunch break?

Generally we tend to think that the canteen is a space about which not much can be done.

The concept that extra students could be fitted in, and that in doing this we would actually reduce behavioural problems, (as opposed to aggravating them) by having more students in one place could come as a surprise.

But this can indeed be the case.

Most school canteens were set up some years ago, and very few have had anyone look at the area from the point of view that the impact the layout of tables and chairs, and a designed ambience has on behaviour.

Similarly it is unusual to find a school in which thought has been given as to how the number of students who can be catered for at one go, can be increased.

Yet this can follow when the tables and chairs in a canteen are replaced – (and perhaps one should note that once the furniture in a school canteen reaches ten years of age, it is ready for replacement).

There are other bonuses that accrue when tables and chairs in the canteen are replaced. These include the provision of furniture that does not chip, items that are 100% stackable, moveable and light, cleaner modern surfaces; and the provision of a separate quiet area for staff and senior students, if required.

All of this means that, aside from the benefits of better behaviour, and a faster turnaround of students, when you come to show parents around the school, the canteen becomes one of the “must see” parts of the school.

Free tailor-made Citizenship / PSHE lesson plans: Explore advertising

Why does advertising need to be regulated? How much do ads influence children and young people? Should advertisers have the freedom to say whatever they want?

These are the ‘big’ questions explored in Ad:Check – Understanding advertising regulation, a free teaching resource developed by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA).

Written for use in Citizenship and PSHE lessons at Key Stage 3 & 4, Ad:Check has proved to be very popular, having been downloaded over 500 times from the TES website alone!

The resource offers a range of flexible, easy-to-use lesson and classroom activities that encourage students to analyse real-life examples of ads, understand the rules that govern them and debate the topical and sometimes controversial issues surrounding advertising, as well as key issues that affect us as citizens and our society as a whole.

Ad:Check is free to download from the ASA website. You can download the whole resource or you can download each section separately, if you would prefer to focus on a particular area for study.

If you haven’t already, why not try Ad:Check out for yourself? We are in no doubt that you will find it a useful addition to your Citizenship or PSHE curriculum.

We hope you enjoy using Ad:Check, and we would love to hear from you. Please contact us with any feedback, queries or general comments at schools@asa.org.uk, or join our mailing list to receive more information from us about the ASA and our schools engagement programme.

March 2013

What is the most motivating thing you could do for your caretaker, for a dinner lady or for your catering manager?

Unsung heroes in schools are generally unsung because they are not on the front line. They are chefs, cooks, dinner ladies, kitchen workers, kitchen managers, catering managers, restaurant managers, caretakers and site managers.

As you look at that list you will, I am sure, agree that such members of your team often don’t get the recognition and encouragement they deserve.

And that’s why we are running the National Unsung Heroes Awards.

There is no charge for entering the awards – and nomination is very straightforward. In fact the quickest and easiest way to submit a nomination is via the nomination form on our website. And it is worth noting that you can nominate more than one colleague for an award.

I’d also add that being shortlisted is a great achievement and a real morale booster for both the individual and the school. Indeed there are few things you can do to improve performance, attitude and commitment that are as powerful as nominating your people for an “Unsung Heroes” Award.

The 2013 Awards categories:

  • Chef/Cook of the year
  • School Dinner Lady of the year
  • Kitchen Worker of the year
  • Kitchen Manager/Catering Manager/Restaurant Manager of the year
  • Caretaker/Site Manager of the year

The closing date for entry is July 1 2013.

Best wishes, and good luck.

All teachers love meetings … So why not hold another one!

There is no perfect way to run a business and lessons unfortunately are often learnt and understood the hard way – when something goes wrong!

In order that students might see how things can go wrong, or how they can go right, we’ve put together a great business exercise called Management Meetings. It is designed to simulate a formal meeting and give students the opportunity to practice decision making in a working environment.

The exercise is suitable for KS4, Sixth Form and Business Studies students who are divided into small teams of 8. Each will act as a senior manager in a department store. Each manager will have individual briefing notes that set out their own departments’ problems.

The Scenario: A large department store, built over two floors and enjoys a prominent position in the local town. It has six departments: Food, Ladies Outerwear, Menswear, Children’s Wear, Lingerie and Homeware.

The Problems: It is approaching Christmas and one of the problems facing the management of the store is where to locate the special gift area which will have a very high sales turnover. Staff problems, stock and security issues are plentiful. How will your students deal with them?

Teamwork, communication, negotiation and problem solving skills are the key to success.

This resource contains: clear teachers’ guidance notes that explain how to run the exercise and include the key information from the job roles, job roles briefing notes for eight students, an organisational chart showing reporting lines and a floor plan of the store.

There are more details at…

http://c-l-e.co.uk/buy-teaching-resources-online/management-meeting/

You can pay and download the exercise direct from our website using Paypal or you may wish to pay with either a cheque or a purchase order number. Simply e-mail your purchase order number to us and we will send the exercise to you along with the invoice for payment.

What is the most effective way of developing an outside space so that it plays a central part in the development of pupil education and awareness?

What is the most effective way of developing an outside space
so that it plays a central part in the development
of pupil education and awareness?

For many pupils, over 20 percent of their time at school is spent in their outdoor space.

As such the areas around the school buildings can be incredibly influential in terms of each pupil’s development and growth.

All that is required is the will to turn the surrounding environment into an important educational resource. ….

And that’s where we come in. We’re Grassroots, a team of people who are passionate about creating exciting and inspirational spaces.

We provide a complete service from design through to construction and aftercare. We work with award winning architects on bigger projects or with our own design team for smaller ones. So we are a flexible depending on your needs.

We offer a free consultation service, which includes free conceptual drawings when looking at any space. Once the idea has been adopted, we can explore with you what the possibilities are. These can range from monkey bars to large playgrounds, outdoor classrooms to making unusable spaces accessible.

Nicky Godetz ; head teacher of Cypress: a large, split site primary school in south London, has this to say about us:-

“We have really enjoyed working with Grassroots Play and would highly recommend you introduce yourself to them and begin to share your aspirations and thoughts and see what they can offer.”

AQA A English Language – Child Language Revision Pack

Designed for the AQA A English Language AS Specification, this revision pack provides activities and worksheets for students to consolidate and apply their learning on the topic of children’s speech – the topic that provides the most popular question by far in ENGA1 section B.

The pack is also suitable for revising the spoken language aspect of the ENGB3 Language Acquisition topic.

The Child Language Revision Pack provides revision activities for students working together or alone, and is flexible enough to allow all ability levels to be catered for.

At the centre of the pack is a series of cards presenting examples, linguistic labels and theories, together with a student instruction sheet with directions for fourteen different revision activities.

Minimal preparation is required to produce a lesson which allows students to work according to their own needs and to develop their abilities to analyse children’s language and to explore acquisition theories.

Other activity sheets target particular areas of the syllabus such as phonological errors, using theory and analysing data for question 2a in the ENGA1 examination.

A teacher’s introduction explains each sheet with suggested uses. A sample essay is also included, to offer as a model and/or to provide practice in applying the mark scheme.

This resource contains 19 copiable masters which are available as a PDF download or as a PDF or editable Word files on a CD. The price of £14.99 + VAT is the same for all formats.

Once purchased the CD can be freely copied and networked throughout the school.

What is the most effective way of supporting students with Asperger’s Syndrome?

When you have a student who sometimes exhibits significant difficulties in social interaction, alongside restricted and repetitive patterns of behaviour, then supporting that student can be very hard indeed.

Students with Asperger’s Syndrome may also exhibit physical clumsiness and unusual uses of language too – everything in the syndrome, in fact, causes difficulty.

The cause of Asperger’s is not clear and there is no single treatment which is recognised as being suitable – and there is even disagreement in some quarters as to whether this is a difference, rather than a disability.

Which is why we have set up an on-line course (developed in association with British Institute of Learning Disabilities and Voyage Care) which explores ways of supporting students with Asperger’s.

On completion of the course you will be equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to support people with Asperger’s and to help them when they become frustrated, angry, depressed or are suffering from low self-esteem.

We also look at some of the common difficulties that people with Asperger’s Syndrome experience, for example, in terms of communication and memory, and consider techniques for helping individuals cope with these on a day-to-day basis.

The study units include:

  • What is Asperger’s?
  • Asperger’s and social interaction
  • Characteristics of autism and providing support.

The full course costs £30 inc. VAT.

What’s the best solution to secure, affordable, on-site PE storage and how do I get it?

When they designed schools, they just didn’t put in enough cupboards but you have loads of kit and equipment you want to keep safe so what do you do?

Our solution

  • is affordable starting at only £12 per week and some PTAs pay this
  • is much more secure than a shed and is wind, weather and rodent proof
  • is already being used by hundreds of schools all over the country

You see them everywhere, but had you realised that steel storage containers make perfect storage for schools. We speak to schools on a daily basis and have helped hundreds of teachers overcome all kinds of storage issues.

Muddy PE equipment does not have to be dragged back into your building at the end of every lesson. It can be securely stored along with all the flags, mowing and line marking equipment conveniently close to the playing field.

With a high-security locking system our containers are much more secure than a shed and are virtually vandal proof.

We can even provide fixed shelving, personnel doors, windows, insulation, heating and lighting so that you get exactly the storage space you need.

Delivery can be arranged very quickly, they are ready to use as soon as they arrive and usually they don’t require planning permission.

If you only need extra storage on a short term basis, perhaps during a refurbishment or for an event, don’t worry we can sort that out for you too.

To find out more, please take a look at our website www.storage-for-schools.co.uk. Alternatively please call me, Simon, on our dedicated schools hotline 01934 781042. I’m sure you’ll have plenty of questions and I’ll be able to help with some friendly advice.

I look forward to hearing from you even, if it’s just for a chat and some advice,

Simon Bass

A research project funded by the Education Endowment Foundation is looking for 50 schools

The Success for All Foundation in partnership with the Institute for Effective Education at the University of York is currently recruiting 50 primary schools to take part in a National Research Project funded by the Education Endowment Foundation.

All the schools will have results in English and Maths which are below 70% for Level 4 and be experiencing challenging circumstances.

If selected, Success for All will work with your school to implement the SFA programme over a two year period. All training and resources will be provided free of charge.

Using a pedagogy based on co-operative learning, Success for All has been particularly effective in schools serving large proportions of disadvantaged children or where there is underachievement.

The programme places the development and implementation of high quality teaching, learning and support at the heart of what it does, embedding literacy across the curriculum with reading as the cornerstone. This research will provide valuable information to educators and policy makers about effective teaching and learning practices in England.

Teaching Art to KS3 and KS4

Teaching Art to KS3 / KS4 is a highly illustrated book of lesson ideas.

The bulk of the book covers a series of 10 skill based lessons for KS3 & 4, a series of projects involving working with industry and reports on making links with art schools.

Each lesson, project and report is highly illustrated with examples of students’ work as they have progressed through the projects which include drawing faces in a crowd, “Reading a picture” which helps students work out what’s going on in a picture and then looking around the picture to understand the artist’s intention.

There is a project on drawing a picture square by square, one on comic strips, the “Ripped Paper Portrait” which helps the understanding of tone through colour, and a further project on newspaper portraits which helps pupils think about the way colour is used.

The composition exercises allow your pupils to create their own composition from pieces of art from well known artists, while the Observational pastel drawing project looks at observation and composition.

Throughout these and the other projects within the download the students can see the work of those who have gone before them, without in any way having their imaginations restricted.

Teaching Art to KS3 and KS4 is published as a download so that you can receive immediately a copy onto your computer which you can print out for colleagues as often as you want. You can also put it on your school learning platform so all members of your department can access the document. YOu can view sample pages at http://www.pdf.firstandbest.co.uk/authordownloadsamples/T1800samples.pdf

You can obtain Teaching Art to KS3 and KS4 by going to http://shop.firstandbest.co.uk/product_info.php?cPath=76_121&products_id=771

FROM APRIL 2013

www.flyingtheatre.com education@flyingtheatre.com

What do French teachers say about our performances?

The production was absolutely brilliant! The French was superb and the actors were clearly highly enthusiastic about what they were doing and engaged the audience superbly. I have seen several productions from travelling companies and this was the very best by a long way. I would have no hesitation in recommending your company to any school.
St Mary’s School, Shaftesbury.

We had a ball! We absolutely loved the performances. The children were ecstatic and totally inspired, thought Pierre was hilarious and were very giddy with joy!
The Academy at Shotton Hall , County Durham

A huge thank you for a truly wonderful performance at our school. Our students were not only thoroughly engaged and entertained, but they were also able to follow the production with ease since the vocabulary was pitched at exactly the right level.
In our follow-up session the students acted out short plays in French and it was a delight to witness the high levels of motivation and enthusiasm; clearly a result of having watched your production. I would recommend that all schools include a performance of Vive la France in their annual calendar; it’s an absolute must!
Conyers School Stockton-on-Tees

Taking the child’s love of the simple maze and using it to teach both co-operation and co-ordination

Everyone loves a maze – perhaps because mazes are infinitely variable and so suitable for all ages.

But perhaps mostly we love mazes because maze solving has a skill all of its own.

That’s a good start of course, but imagine also a maze in which the child not only has to find the way through a simple maze, but must also learn to balance at the same time!

The challenge is immense, but the solution is possible for older nursery children, and achieving the solution will help their physical co-ordination to develop, as well strengthening the cognitive skills involved in solving the maze and co-operation when two or more children are involved.

Such an impact comes with the Balancing Maze which can be used across different difficulty levels, and its companion the Twin Balancing Board.

At the simplest level the child holds the Balancing Maze and gently turns it one way and the next to guide the ball through the maze – thus developing arm co-ordination and strength.

At the next stage two children work together with the board, co-operating to get the ball to move in the desire direction.

Next we return to single use again with the child standing on the board with one foot on either side. Then eventually it is two children holding hands and co-ordinating their balance.

The Twin Balancing Board works in a similar way but has a higher weight maximum (taking 100kg as opposed to a maximum of 80kg for the Balancing Maze).

Additionally the Twin Balancing Board comes with three different maze patterns and allows up to six children to hold it while manipulating up to three different balls.

If ever there was a game that teaches three skills at once, this is it.

For more information on the Balancing Maze go to our website – www.edventure.co.uk/active-play/balancing-maze.

The Little Box of BIG Questions

Philosophical and meaningful conversations with children and young people

Professor Irvine Gersch & Dr Anna Lipscomb

Children/young people need time, space and kindness to speak openly about the things most important to them and listening can help facilitators understand better the root of children’s thinking and behaviour, and can give an insight into how to better support them to reach their potential. Use these cards to provide prompts for a meaningful, stimulating and positive conversation about the ‘bigger picture’ in life. They will help children and young people understand their views about life, school and people important to them, which is enlightening for the facilitators too.

There are four areas for discussion:

Identity – allows the child to consider what is special about them as individuals & includes: How would you describe the person you are?

Important people – children are encouraged to consider who is important to them through questions such as: Who is special to you?

Meaning & Purpose – questions covering our mission and purpose in life, for example: Do you think that people’s lives are set out for them?

Thinking & Planning – the final set of questions allows individuals to think about how they reflect and make big decisions, for instance: How do you calm your mind, relax and think best? Have you ever experienced a big change in your life?

Contents: 17 A5-size cards, includes instruction booklet with ideas for use

Fifty Health & Lifestyle-based Group Activities for PSHE Key Stages 3 & 4

Trying to convince teenagers of the need to engage in a healthy lifestyle can on occasion seem a difficult task.

Which is why one PSHE teacher thought about turning the issue into a series of “Life Games” – all based around the curriculum requirements for the health and lifestyle topics in PSHE Key Stages 3 and 4.

These games enable you to inform and engage your students on topics which are notoriously sensitive including relationships, reproduction, substance misuse, sunshine and travel, mental health and depression.

Each game is a stand-alone activity which can be delivered to a range of groups. Most of the games are accompanied by separate student notes. Clear learning objectives, based on the national curriculum, together with session plans, are provided.

The games can be used in any order and are suited to the classroom, although they could be used in other contexts. They are intended for groups of about eight to forty participants and are generally appropriate for teenagers and young adults. Each activity should last about thirty minutes, although they can be adapted for longer sessions. There are also suggestions for extending the activity and “talking points”, useful as fillers.

Life Games is available as a photocopiable book or on CD Rom, and individual activities can thus be readily copied and distributed to students as required. The copies can also be shared with colleagues or given to supply teachers, without any fear of the original book being misplaced.

Teaching Religious Ethics

Teaching Religious Ethics can involve students being introduced to a wide range of new topics all at once – which is why it can be helpful to have sets of copiable worksheets and/or a CD that can be put on the school’s learning platform so that the students can refer back to key points as the course continues.

This is what “Religious Ethics” by Francis Beswick aims to do. The volume examines ethical thinking in relation to various religious traditions and looks at how religious and secular ethics differ from each other.

Secular theories discussed include: Utilitarianism; Deontological Ethics; Virtue Ethics; and Free will and Determinism. The book also looks at environmental ethics, medical ethics (including abortion, euthanasia and embryo research) and business ethics and how they relate to religious ethics, and throughout the book includes a large number of questions for students to consider and answer.

The book commences with the phrase “I ought to …” and notes that from this kind of statement ethics, whether it be secular or religious ethics, begins.

The volume is a helpful support for students studying A.Q.A. syllabi RSS01, RSS02 and RST3A and OCR’s syllabus G572. While this is not a complete course book for these syllabi, it is intended to explain the issues in a clear way so that students can clarify key issues.

Religious Ethics is available as a copiable spiral bound book or on CD Rom. The book comes with an unlimited photocopiable licence for the school, and costs £21.99 plus £3.95 delivery for either the book or CD. If you wish to buy both together the price is £28.98 plus £3.95 delivery.
